I am a Mount Holyoke student, in the middle of my Junior year. I study psychology, politics, international relations and media. I interned in Peru this past summer with One Laptop Per Child and that's when I began this blog. This fall I studied abroad at the University of Haifa in Israel. During the semester break I traveled around Europe, a total of six weeks, and now I am back in Israel for my second semester.

These are my stories.

Travel Blog Posts

I was talking with Dani recently about blogs and she was wondering if I would continue mine. I had figured I wouldn't as I was no longer traveling and that had been the point of this blog. However, I realized that I could then do a reverse-travel blog and that I could write this blog for all of the people that I met while I was traveling, ones who are curious about what I'm up to now that I'm "home" (there will be more discussion on this topic later). So from now on, this blog will be more about everyday life, updated when I feel like it and geared towards people not in the US or New England area. Let's see, I last wrote in the end of May, just before the end of classes. A ... read more

Hanging on the back of my door for the past few weeks has been a calendar. I made it one day when I was procrastinating and it's helped me keep things in perspective. Every night before I go to sleep I cross off yet another day. Some of my friends don't like the idea, thinking that I'm counting down to leaving. While I'm still battling feelings of wanting to leave and not wanting to, it helps me keep in mind how much time I have left. Bumps along the road that may have seemed like real problems once are now much more trivial, but then again sometimes I put things too much into perspective and forget that I still have 16 days left in Israel. It's not long, but not as short as I make it ... read more

Many other people have gone to the beach earlier in the semester, but I kept putting it off for some reason. I said I had work, or I was tired, or didn't feel like making the shlep all the way down the mountain. Finally Saturday, I went and salsa'd on the beach. It was a beautiful day, though a little too cold to swim, so we danced instead. One of my friends brought a small stereo and on the boardwalk we talked and danced and danced and talked. It was a lovely afternoon, not crowded but definitely full of happy beach-goers, children riding bikes, grandparents with grandchildren, young people swimming (the brave ones), parents running after children. Then getting back from the beach yesterday I hung out with neighbors and friends, who were celebrating "Lag B'Omer", ... read more

Wow Haifa is beautiful. I'm sitting here in a cafe called Capiot (Kap-i-yot, meaning spoons in Hebrew), just working through the afternoon. Lots of work, but at least the view is unbeatable. The air has cleared, the sun is shining, and the weather is not to hot and not too cold, just warm enough. I've had a tough two weeks; having vacation has been great, but I have been working a lot. It's been really tough because I'm feeling quite lost; I've called Haifa my home for nearly 8 months now, and the thought of leaving is really tearing me up. I feel so at home here, and yet so much like an outsider the more I think about returning to my real home, in good ol' Massachusetts. And yet, I don't feel like MA is ... read more

Time has already begun to fly; I leave in less than three months! It's truly unbelievable. I'm going to have to start finding things about Israel that I hate so that it will be easier to leave. As you can see, some of the pictures are a bit old, from when my parents were visiting. I also took a few from the costume shopping for Purim, the Purim parties and salsa. I also decorated my room with all the maps and tickets that I got from all over Europe and finally it feels nice and homey (as you can see). The semester is officially underway, and everything should be settling down and yet they aren't. I have so much to do for next year and this summer that its dizzying, but at least my classes are ... read more

It has been a very busy 3 weeks since I last wrote, and here are just a few pictures to prove it! Okay, an obnoxious number of pictures. I uploaded a bunch from the whole trip, and tried to chose only the best ones. If anyone wants to see more of a certain place, please let me know. By the end of my trip I had taken almost 2000 pictures! So yes, I am happily back in Israel right now. The semester began this past Sunday with a boring orientation and we started classes on Monday. When I last wrote, Mom and I were in Amalfi and were enjoying fireworks. From Amalfi we went on to Orvieto for 2 nights, during which we took a lovely side-trip to the hill town of Civita (pronounced che-vi-ta). Then ... read more

We are here and happy to report that all is well! Now that is cleared up, I can give a short report about our recent adventures. I say "we" as I was met by mom at the bus station in Rome, on an unfortunately rainy day but we still made the most of it, running between the Colleseum, the Forum and later the fountain of Trevi, taking many great photos. The next morning we were off to the coast! We took a nice train ride down to Salerno, and managed to stay only slightly alarmed when the train started back towards Rome when we were only in Naples (it ended up being just fine, but very confusing!). We explored around Amalfi town, where we are currently staying, and had a lovely evening of freshly made paninis ... read more

I know it's been a little while since I've updated, things got crazy! To summarize, I went from London down to Brighton for a night, to visit my friend Kotz from Mount Holyoke. We had a great time hanging out, I had a minor problem with my bank which was unfortunate, but the 4am jam session in her hallway made up for it. Next, I bussed back to London and up to Edinburgh, an overnight bus. I met up with my friend Ben from Wildwood, who is studying abroad there, and stayed with him for a night. I toured Edinburgh, which is BEAUTIFUL, and had a great time visiting with Ben and his roommates and even a Mount Holyoker too. The day I left, which was the day after I got there, Ben and his roommate ... read more

Well I'm here! I got in last night and have been hanging out with my friend Will for the last 24 hours. We interned together this summer in Peru, so we've had fun catching up on what's been going on for the last 6 months. He's studying abroad here for the year, so he's a good tour guide. Let's see, I left Amsterdam on Wednesday for Belgium. It wasn't too long of a bus ride and soon I was in snowy, dreary Brussels. The amazing chocolate and delicious waffles made up for it, and I had a fun time wandering around the city for a few hours. I stopped into a pub and read for a while, planning out what I wanted to do in England and where. I stayed the night with a friend of ... read more

It has been a whrilwind of a few days! I don't have time to properly update, but here are the highlights. I made it safe and sound to Prague on Friday and we met up with Niall, who flew in to meet us. Saturday I did the Prague free tour and really enjoyed it, despite the cold and crazy amount of snow. I met up with my good friend Lenka (from Haifa who lives in Prague) but all too soon we were on our way. We took an overnight train from Prague to Amsterdam and arrived in the morning; it wasn't too bad, I actually got some sleep. We did the free tour around Amsterdam and really really enjoyed it. It's actually snowing in Amsterdam too, which apparently is unusual, so we had fun watching people ... read more
