Shoes and hat Chris!!!!
Hi Chris... sorry can't help it but it would be great to see you wearing shoes (or at least thongs..as this makes it harder for the worms to burrow in through the soles of your feet!) and a hat wouldn't go astray (when I think of all those precautions taken at Macs Beach when you were a toddler!) But most of all ... my motherly advice is .... "make the most of this amazing experience you and Kari are having."

White privilege
'White privilege" is a tricky one. Lucky for me I just need to keep my mouth shut and with my dark hair I can blend in. Not taking advantage of it and showing your gratitude and respect always seems to go a long way ... as well as an ever present smile!

Definately Lyn, being humble about it i think is the most important thing, because it is by chance I am white, it doesn't make me better though

Adventures galore
Very envious of all your experiences and travels. What a fantastic learning experience for you both. The hairdressing adventures brought back memories of my time in Thailand. There is nothing like it in Australia. The coastline and islands look and sound great! Take care , love from your mum , Chris

Luv the tree house
Wow! - what an experience you're both having - really interesting and worthwhile. I recently read a book about child prostitution in Cambodia by Somaly Mam - horrific story tho also one of hope. i was always fascinated by Swiss Family Robinson and would love to live in a tree house in a tropical country. Spent yesterday in Sydney and took Jo and Tayla to the Fitness Expo at Darling Harbour. Tayla made some useful contacts with her studies next year and then met your Mum and had a Thai lunch at Haymarket. Geoff and I then caught the train home. Archie is growing up and is still really cruisy and lots of fun, Nathan is in his 2nd rotation working in the mines in WA and in his next week off him and Hol are coming down here. Byron stydying at W'gong and Kayla has been assigned a case manager for her visa appn. Enjoy hearing about your adventures. Keep well much love Geoff Patti boys and girls xox

Hi Patti, the swiss family robinson thing came up on our advertures - i don't really know the show but Chris felt it was an achievement to stay in one after the show. We would love to see some recent pictures of archie so please pass on our love & email to Guy & Nic. My cousin & her partner just moved to perth so he can do mining work to save for a house - hope Nath is finding it worthwhile. How is Kayla's VISA application going? We will pray for a positive outcome. It is great to hear the update, Love Kari and Chris

Refugees - sadly a continuing rise in numbers
How can any of us lucky enough to be living in Australia even begin to imagine what horrors the Cambodian people went though in the 1970s. It is in inspirational to read of the courage and resilience of Van Chhuon. Australia welcomed many Cambodian refugees in the 80s who , along with their families Have happy and successful lives. Sadly there are still over 11 million refugees in the world. Unspeakable atrocities still happen. Last year Australia only accepted 13,700 refugees from Iran, Burma, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Congo , Ethiopia ... I wonder what more we can do?

advocate is one answer
Thank you Lynny for your comment, the courage and resilience in this story is phenomonal. I think more stories like this in Cambodia will help build courage and strength of the community I think that we can use our position of privilege in Australia to advocate to our local members and to the media about asylum seeker & migration policy. Whilst the social and political climate (including the media) in Australia has aspects of racism, discrimination and neo-liberal ideology there our numbers of accepting refugees will be low comparative to other countries As to solving situations which cause refugees such as in Syria, Afghanisation, Iraq - I don't think there is a clear cut answer
