Coming back from Machu Picchu was long. After getting there at 6am, we stayed till about midday and then took the 1000 steps , that I´d neglected to go up earlier (it was still a bit hard actually, ha). WE then, incredibly tired as we were after 4 days of constant walking upppp and doooown, and upppp and doooown, and actually the most tiring and blister creating bit of all, the time when we just walked alooooooooong, just wanted to go to a bed. Any bed. However, our train back to Ollytaytamboo (some of those letters may not be correct) wasn´t until 6.45 so we basically just had to hang around for hours. Which is when I last blogged.Did i say all this already? Ah whatever - you´re only skim reading anyway aren´t you hmm? The ... read more

Yeh i Know! I totally did! So as some of you probably know, we did the Salkantay trek, as we couldn{t get into the Inca Trail.. a shame, but Salkantay was meant to be good so we thought we{d go for it - Machu Picchu is the end game anyway. It{s a 5 day 4 night hike with camping on all but the last night, but we decided to take the option of skipping the first day and night, and doing some practice hikes of our own... thus skipping the dullest day, and the coldest night - and hopefully saving my knee from undue pain. (actually, I{m just going to apologise now if this is awful drivel... so very very tired, but we have to wait another 2 hours for the train and bus back to ... read more

Now that i'm with Sofia (hooray!) we often lament about the price difference between here and Asia - I have been pissing money away. Not that I regret splashing out a few more soles on trying cerviche the other day- it was a bloody bargain away for the huge pile of seafood i got, but i maybe regret a little staying in such fancy expensive hostels, and getting fleeced by every taxi driver I come across. Well no more! We are feeling poor and have pledged to do better. The poverty may have been inspired by splashing out On a more expensive (well, mid-range) Salkantay trek... But you know what, I don't like being cold and i want a blow up mattress damn it! And an energency horse. I really really wanted an emergency horse included ... read more

Just realised this automatically went out to anyone who was subscribed to my blog last time... Including people who probably really couldn't less (hi Dave!). So sorry to those people, I think you can just unsubscribe. I also just saw a load of commentsfrom the AS level students who were made to read some of my blog for their exam over the few years. Some nice comments, some slagging off my grammar and spelling (accepted), and some death threats (bit harsh). Anyway... Hi and bye xx... read more

Or not, as the case may be... depending on your own level of bravery I suppose. After spending yesterday morning in a jet-lagged daze, and yesterday afternoon chatting to old Peruvian on a bench at the seafront (true story - Silvia. She was lovely... we exchanged email addresses but I can´t read her old lady handwriting) I thougt that today I better get out and about in Lima. I got up bright and early (not that it was my choice... stupid multi-country-jetlag) had mi desayuno, and had a little chat with the hostel staff about getting a bus into Central Lima. They visibly winced. You know what, I´m sure a lot of intrepid young travellers would have said NO, I can do this, I´m a brave, strong, sensible independent woman who knows how to both speak ... read more

Hello, or as the locals say, hola (I didn't spend all that time learning Spanish for nothing you know) from Lima. Where, as the heading implies, I'm having a nice lie down. Bloody knackered... And fair enough too I think - I've done a lot of international travel this week. After being reminded of the concept by Mrs Clarke, I thought that perhaps a blog would be a good idea, to keep all you Karen-fans (or do you prefer Kaz-fans?) up to date on my exploits. However, being as I'm too knackered to go to use the hostel computer, i'm actually writing this ony iPod, which will get very boringvery soon. Don't judge me on this one. I promise I'll be more amusing when I can see straight. The weather has been following me it seems, ... read more

Yes folks... i've been here for ages and i've told anyone what i'm upto! Sorry about that, especailly as i know how much you all miss my side-splitting anecdotes, tales of dynanism and philosopical musings on international culture, (like your own personal Michael Palin eh?) but to be honest, i can never be arsed. But no fear, i'll try to summarise the past month of my life in the remaining 15minutes of free computer i have left here at Brisbane library. Ok, so i spoke to you when i got to darwin (city of the past!), which i actually really liked! Everyone was so friendly, and though we did sweet FA for much of time, we bloody well enjoyed doing it! From there we went to both Kakadu and Litchfield national parks, both of which are ... read more

G'day Yes people, i am speaking to you live and direct from holiday part II - Australia. I will of course try to backtrack on the blog, but i thought as i've you know, sidled over to a whole new continent, i should write a brief note. And brief it shall be as one of the many difference between asia and australia is how BLOODY expensive this country seems now! I mean we've gone from spending 50p, maybe a pound every night on accomodation, to like 9 / 10 quid! Like real money!! Man alive... fags and booze are real prices too, which is a bit of a mare as everyone here wants a party and we just may not be able to afford it... hell, we're a little concerned about having the money to get ... read more

Well ok, start at the start... we were menat to go straight to Hoi An, but actually got booted off the bus in Hue, which is pretty much just over the former border into the South. The more pleasant South i might add. Anyway, the bus stopped, we were told to get off, had a fag, tried to get back on like eveyone else, and were told 'er no, bus full, you'll have to wait here till the next one this afternoon'. Bastards. I guess having a break after 16 hours or something ridiculous on the bus is a good thing, but when you want to go... anyway, it turned out to be pretty sweet as Hue is a very pretty town, and it was nice to spend a few hours being zoomed through it on ... read more

Our next trip was an overnighter in sapa, which as it turns out is a phenominally beautiful; place up in the hills of Northern Vietnam. It started well... despite the negative reports from travellers about the night train up there, it seems they've ust had the cushiest holiday ever, as to us the beds on the rains were nothing short of luxury, and we had the best nights sleep we'd had in ages! Sweeeeeeet. Like all vietnamese it seems, the hill tribe folk have an astute business sense, and on our arrival a hoard of young girls were already waiting there, ready to learn our names for later use! Actually it was cool, they were well sweet, and chose to tag along on our trip, making us flower crowns, small dogs out of grass, and variety ... read more
