Ben Folds puts on such an incredible live show, well worth the wait; fortunately, I did get to see most of it before feeling the effects of the mickey that was slipped into my drink. My first footy game, Adelaide Crowes vs. Pt. Adelaide Power, it is now no mystery why Aussies are obsessed with this game.... read more

Okay...so you never got the story to go along with the photos from the last few journals. I still may attempt to add some text, but perhaps not. All apologies. Here are some more photos from a short stay in Melbourne, the beginnings of the GRO tour and some additional GRO pics. I missed my first flight on Friday night because I miscalculated my flight time (brilliant!) but made up for in on Saturday when I arrived...... read more

So...I arrived at the Thebarton Theatre not sure what to expect and found a treasure of a venue only a ten minute bus ride from my flat. The theatre was built in 1926 and regardless of many years of renovation, I could picture early Aussie theatre goers and high society piling into the place for a big night on the town. The place actually really reminded me of The El Rey in L.A. Opening for Gomez was Paul Dempsey, the lead singer of Something For Kate, a Melbourne band I have yet to give a listen to. I only caught a few of Dempsey's tunes but was very impressed with him. Perceptive lyrical twists, aching vocals, a dirty guitar backed by a masculine melody, mmm. I will be keeping an eye out for a solo album and/or ... read more

Okay ya’ll, so do to a combination of procrastination, a busy schedule, computer flu, my own flu and just plain laziness it’s been over a month since my last blog so here goes….Let’s start with work and my plans, which have changed quite a bit. I will not make it back to Texas for graduation in May as I had originally intended, there is too much to explore here and too slim a possibility I will ever have this opportunity again. All of the interesting new faces I have seen, the people I have encountered and the stories I have heard have inspired me to see as much as I can, not only of Oz but the world. As I mentioned in my previous blog, my supervisor had casually asked about my interest in future ... read more

So, I said I would not make any promises and here I am a little over three weeks later, feels like much longer. I spent the following few days doing the cultural touristy stuff since I was on my own, I hit the State Library, The Botanical Gardens, Museum of South Australia and Aboriginal Art Museum, some definitely more interesting than others but each definitely worth a look, some fascinating art. The Botanical Gardens were beautiful and I found myself there almost every afternoon until the rest of the crew arrived. I had the chance to spend some time with people from all over the world, with roommates from Hong Kong, Germany, Sweden and France. I spent most of my time with two guys from England one who was a worker at the hostel and one ... read more

Arrived in Adelaide AUS on Thursday January 6, 2005 after about 20 hours of flying, airports etc…The girls and I, unbeknownst to us, had a pick-up arranged by Flinders University, the director of the Graduate Social Work Program’s daughter “Myf” picked us up from the airport and assisted us in finding accommodation. We ended up at the Plaza Hotel on Hindley St., in Adelaide’s red-light district which was as a tame a puppy dog. We spent two nights there and although amenities were far from the Plaza I’ve always wanted to stay in, the service was exceptional. The hotel staff, Gary in particular, could not have been more helpful and even came in with a grin when one of the girls clogged up the toilet, no worries! Staying awake the first night was a struggle, but ... read more
