Hi! I am from the North East of Scotland and just got back from my trip of a lifetime. Just thought I'd put some of my photos and stories from my globetrotting activities online, to save boring everyone to tears with my 500 or so pics! Hope you enjoy it and take away inspiration to up sticks and leave the comforts of your home for those of a 10 share dorm somewhere in the world!

Well, what can I tell you about Melbourne? I loved it! I went for 6 weeks and ended up staying about 4 months! It was time to get a job, money was running out and in turn so was the fun. Melbourne was going to be the place to build up the funds again. If only it was that easy! I was a bit naïve and thought I would just pick up work in a couple of days, well you can if you want to work on commission only. I did an evening cleaning job for around a week, which was heaps of fun but then landed a telesales job. I didn’t expect to enjoy it or be able to do it, but when you really need the money and put your mind to something the ... read more

After a couple of nights in Adelaide to recuperate, it was time to hit the road again, leaving Adelaide behind for good. We boarded the big green bus at silly o’clock in the morning and headed for Great Ocean Road. In all it took us 3 days to get to Melbourne, we went through Halls Gap, (killing a poor Wallaby that dared to run in front of the bus) the Grampians where we saw McKenzie Falls – damn steps again. I was starting to see a pattern emerging in this holiday and wasn’t too impressed. I saw my first real Australian kookaburra when we returned to the top of the steps, maybe a reward from above for persevering, who knows. We stayed in Warrnambool, visited Torquay and the famous Bells Beach. The beach is where some ... read more

Well, Kangaroo Island was just a taster of what was in store over the next 9 days. We had booked a tour with Campwild Adventures from Adelaide to Alice Springs. 9 days, 3 showers – a far cry to what I’m used to at home! It turned out to be the best part of my trip. Again, sleeping in a swag, nothing to protect me from the weird and wonderful things to be found in the Australian outback. Sleeping under an outback sky is one of my favourite memories from my whole 8 months away. The stars are so bright, the sky is so black, it really was amazing. I saw the most amazing sights I’ve ever, the Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Track, Lake Eyre, Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Watarka, and so so much more. The amount of ... read more

I did a 3 day/2 night camping trip to Kangaroo Island and I loved every minute. We slept in swags under the stars and amongst the possums, made damper bread on open fires and hardly saw a flushing toilet the whole time! This was the first time I tasted kangaroo meat. Delicious with barbecue sauce! We saw lovely scenery, Admiral’s Arch, The Remarkable Rocks, Seal Bay and went sandboarding at Little Sahara. Typical Aussie outback adventure – great!... read more

A trip to Oz is not complete without the obligatory stint of fruit picking. So we headed for the riverland. Berri here we come! We stayed for a week at the most amazing hostel ever, it had a swimming pool, football pitch, volleyball court, yoga room, gym, games room, treehouses, hammocks and not forgetting Wiggo’s famous Saturday night barbecues! Only fitted in 2 mornings picking grapes ‘cos lazing around at the hostel was far more appealing, and anyway picking fruit is no holiday!!!... read more

South Australia was my next destination, and so we headed to the capital – Adelaide. I really liked the city; it was fairly small for a capital but friendly, clean and safe. We went to Mount Lofty Summit, Clelend Wildlife Park (where I cuddled a koala) took the old fashioned tram to Glenelg and did the typical backpacker things in the city…….the free museums, 2 for 1 Big Mac’s and ladies night at PJ O’Briens!!!!!. We made Adelaide our base for around a month while we nipped off and did more exciting things. For some reason something kept compelling us to go back to My Place Hostel, I think it could have been Andrea’s famous hat parties! All you can drink homemade punch for only $5………..as long as you wear a ridiculous looking hat! Oh, I ... read more

Here is the start of the real adventure, finally reached Oz. I was glad to have the 3 weeks in Asia to help me to adjust to the temperature and heat, we arrived in the middle of a heatwave! It was about 44 degrees, hotter than Singapore. I went to Rottnest Island for a day and cycled the whole 11km of the circumference. I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of Quokkas on my journey so that took away from some of the agony! Visited Perth city and went to Kings Park and the Swan Bell Tower, went to Cottesloe for the Sunday Session and did the candlelit tour of Fremantle Jail. Educational week I'd say.... read more

When we left KL it was the usual destination, Singapore. Clean, nice, glad I went, but boring. Only spent 3 or 4 days here as well and it was long enough to do and see what I wanted. Went to Raffles Hotel and had the obligatory Singapore Sling (cost me £6.18 for the pleasure), went to the zoo and night safari. I really enjoyed this, kinda cruel to have a Polar Bear in a zoo in Singapore though, poor thing used to the extreme cold and here he was now living virtually on the equator! Did a self guided tour around the city, saw Raffles Landing Site, the Merlion and all the usual sights of Singapore.... read more

Having survived my luxurious lazing around on beaches on the Thai islands we headed further south to Malaysia and spent 3 or 4 days in Kuala Lumpur. I really liked the city, especially the hawker stalls where you could get a feast for next to nothing. Mmmm! Unfortunately the skybridge at the Petronas Twin Towers was closed for maintenance on the days we were there but we did manage to go up the KL tower and get spectacular views over the city. One day we decided to venture a little further out of the city to the Batu Caves. After an hour or so of waiting around in the midday sun for a bus, we made it to our destination. \'Lucky\' for us we visited a week after a Hindu festival and had the pleasure of ... read more

A short boat ride away was my island retreat of Ko Pha Ngan, I spent a week here doing.....well, not very much. Thoroughly enjoyed the luxury of a beautiful hut right on a private beach, hammocks, veranda, the full works. All for the equivalent of £5 a night! One day was spent on An Thong National Park, sea kayaking, walking to the lake in the mountains, swimming and snorkelling. I even saw a wild monkey up a palm tree. So different to Scotland.... read more
