Me at 6am getting ready to publish this blog. I got up this morning at 3:30am.
Yes, for those who’ve not heard the news we finally got the internet installed at the rental house! Yes, congratulations are in order or are they? I’m thrilled to be able to communicate again but it’s like giving a drug to a former addict. Having so much input at your fingertips is dangerous when you’ve essentially been denied it for 4 months. The internet was installed in the house on Friday, May 12th. I sent out an immediate email to close family members about the news only to discover once the computer was turned off the internet didn’t work anymore. Think [View Full Entry]

May already! Where has the time gone? Happy Cinco De Mayo to those who celebrate. It’s strange to think we’ve been living here for close to four months. It seems like only a few weeks. We’ve gotten word from family in Arizona that the heat is arriving. We are still enjoying weather in the 70’s on warm days low 80’s. You should see us run for the fan when the temperature nears 80 degrees. What a change! We’ve found warm afternoons are a great time to watch rented movies with popcorn and a fan. The big news of late is that [View Full Entry]

Parque de diversions - Amusement Park The day finally arrived! We weren’t able to find much information about this park prior to our visit. One guide book described it as a splendid 12-acre Disney-style attraction. Moon handbooks called it the Williamsburg of Costa Rica. The description left us wondering. Our initial attempt to visit the park on Thursday provided just the information Callista needed to convince her THIS was the place to go. One look at the giant roller coaster was all she needed to get her adrenaline pumping. For Bill, the sign 2 x 1 Viernes got his blood pumping. [View Full Entry]

Museo de Los Ninos The Museo De Llos Ninos is an awesome place for children and adults alike. It is located in central San Jose. The building was a former prison turned into a children’s museum. I don’t know the whole story of the transition but will include some pictures of an area of the museum they keep on exhibit of the former prison. The museum was an unplanned trip this day. It was a place both Bill and I wanted to visit so we were willing participants. What a treat. This is a hands-on science and technology museum for children [View Full Entry]

April 26, 2006 Callista’s Birthday Callista was the first of our family to celebrate her birthday in Costa Rica. We invited our Canadian neighbors over for cake and ice cream on Sunday the 24th as well as our local friends and their son who had his 5th birthday the previous week. Our Canadian friends were returning to Canada the following day for 10 days to tie up some loose ends and wouldn’t be in town for Callista’s actual birthday. It was important to her to have her friends celebrate with her. For Callista’s ‘real’ birthday we celebrated [View Full Entry]

This is Callistaīs article. :) My trip to Poas Volcano by Callista Sheridan Poas volcano is approximately 30 kilometers (50 miles) from my house in San Ramon. Last Tuesday it took about forty minutes to get there. The weather was cloudy, cold and misty. We left home at 6:30a.m. We got to Poas National park right as they opened the gates just before 8:00a.m. We walked to the top of the mountain, about a half mile from the parking lot. We looked over the edge but couldn’t see anything because of the clouds. We could hear bubbling noises, swishing and lots [View Full Entry]

April 19, 2006 Easter in Costa Rica was a very different experience for us this year for a few reasons. Living in a different country brings about new experiences as does having our little girl mature. The Easter Bunny does not exist in Costa Rica. For us this wasn’t an issue as Callista has now grown beyond that. However, she had been secretly hoping for a chocolate bunny as we’ve always gotten one for our kids. There were none to be found in our neck of the woods. Nor were we able to find plastic eggs to hide. With critters in [View Full Entry]

Saturday Drive We woke early and as it was such a clear morning decided to take a drive up to look at the property. The views were stunning. We’re anxiously waiting the completion of the deal so the property will be officially OURS. Soon, possibly in the next couple of weeks. We were in the mood for a drive after looking around for awhile. Actually, Bill is always in the mood to try different roads to places we haven’t been. Jim, our friend gave us directions for the route he takes to the beach from the property and Bill was ready [View Full Entry]

April 8, 2006 After ten weeks and 5 days living in Costa Rica, we couldn’t be happier with our decision to move. The move isn’t something for everyone but it was the right choice for us. We’ve not regretting one minute since our decision. Adjustments must be made for it is a very different lifestyle than any of us has been accustomed to. The trick for us has been remembering what we value in life and adjusting our lifestyle accordingly. When we first moved it was easy to do what other North Americans were doing. In a way, it’s like keeping [View Full Entry]

Geography and route info: (Billīs portion) On our trip to Monteverde we left San Ramon by way of the autopista toward Puntarenas then north on the autopista to a turnoff near the town of Sardinal. From here the entire distance went from paved road to a cinder block and large rock strewn dirt road. The total distance of the dirt road was 30km. Travel time was about 90 minutes. It proceeded from maybe 200 ft elevation at Sardinal to about 5000 ft at the Biological reserve in Monteverde. On our way out we tried a different route through a town called [View Full Entry]
