Hey there again. I know I said I'd write something else before I left Prague, but last week was insanely busy—trying to finish papers, study for exams, pack, see last-minute stuff and party as much as possible is no easy task. And I'm sorry this and the last entry are without photos, but this site kind of sucks and they take forever to upload. But moving on, I left Saturday morning, and it was honestly one of the strangest experiences of my life. I felt like I was leaving home without the slightest idea when I'd be back. And I knew [View Full Entry]

I’m not going to promise that I’ll add weekly entries to this anymore because a) I’m kind of lazy, b) I only have a few weeks left in Europe and c) you know better by now. But I’ll fill you in on what I’ve been up to lately: In the past two weeks or so, I have seen some familiar faces from high school, which has been awesome. My friend Kelsey studying in London came in for a weekend, so we went to the Jewish Quarter and I finally saw all the beautiful, famous synagogues and cemeteries. The week after, I [View Full Entry]

So I did it again. I waited three weeks to write another blog. I know you were all eagerly sitting at your computers just WAITING to hear what Julia’s been up to next, right? Clearly I’m kidding, but I do apologize for the delay. Anyway, lots has happened since I last wrote, one major thing being spring break in Turkey. Let me first say it is an amazing, beautiful, fascinating country; if you ever consider going, I’d say “Don’t think, just book it.” Our group (six girls and myself) started our trip in Istanbul where we stayed for three days. This [View Full Entry]

Dobry den! Thought I’d check in and tell you what I’ve been doing the past week. I’ve actually been sort of lazy and gotten into a regular schedule with class and everything. I guess it’s good because it makes me feel like I’m actually living here and not just running around with a camera trying to see everything all the time. But I also know I’ll miss out on good stuff since my time is limited—as are my funds, as my parents have been so kindly reminding me lately. But anyway, I went to the Franz Kafka Museum for Modern Lit [View Full Entry]

Shame on me

I’m sorry—I really don’t know how I’ve neglected this for so long… probably a combination of lack of time, preoccupation and pure laziness. I have lots to report now so I’ll start where I left off… Three weeks ago, I went to my Czech flat mate’s house in Trutnov, which is a town about 2.5 hours north of Prague on the edge of Poland. It was a beautiful area near the mountains, which was a nice break from city life. We were outside in snow boarding pants for a majority of the weekend. And get this—I went to skiing for the [View Full Entry]

Another week has flown by (really, time is moving so fast), and I have some good stuff to report. First of all, I went to two operas this week—yes, two. So I’m a little operaed out, but how many times do you get to say you’ve seen one in Prague? I saw “Candide” Thursday night with my flat mates and “Nebucco” with the entire program Friday. 100-some dressed-up, slightly-buzzed American college kids makes for an interesting evening. Overall, I thought the music and set designs in each were beautiful, but I had a hard time getting into the stories [View Full Entry]

Ahoj again! It’s the end of week two now, and after my initial state of euphoria I am finally starting to get a feel for the city and figure out what is where. I find it both exciting and scary. It’s the first time in my life I’ve been away from the states for an extended period of time, by myself nonetheless. Obviously, thousands of people my age are doing the exact same thing right now, but it’s kind of big for me. But moving on, it’s been another busy week. My daily schedule is usually five hours of Czech class, [View Full Entry]

The first week...

Europe » Czech Republic » North » Prague
Hello friends, family and random bored people who came across this! Hope life is treating you well. It’s my sixth day in Prague, and so far I think it’s pretty wonderful. The architecture, nature and general layout of the city is absolutely gorgeous. There is a really unique balance of old and new culture here—the castles and cubism, the hundreds of churches and prevalent secularism, the traditional old generations and cool young people. It’s really interesting to see how rapid change in the past two decades has affected the society. I fear my expectations for the r [View Full Entry]
