River close up in Omoa
River close up in Omoa
pictures of the river that leads up to the mountains in Northern Honduras.
Well I am actually here on the northern carribean coast of Honduras in a small beach village called Omoa which has a population of about 2000. I have been here since arriving at the port city of Puerto Cortes in Northern Honuduras even though the entry states that I am in San Pedro Sula. I went to do some exploring of the local area and decided the easiest way to do this was to hire a local bike which was extremely small and had a basket on the front......a lot like a girlies bike. Great scenery around here, managed to cycle [View Full Entry]

Have decided to rest here for a day or two before I head south through this country to the capital. The people are very laid back and the weather is reasonable so I wander around and decide to take some fotos. The Beach is not as clean as Placencia in Belize because apparently they have had bad storms here a few years ago which have taken a lot of the white sand away but nevertheless the scenery around this one time fishing village is amazing ! Not too many people taking in the sunshine though because I seem to be about [View Full Entry]

Life on the beach in Belize on a perfect day and some of the beach huts that line the seafront
Well after a few days of london weather the sun has decided to show its face in this part of the world and how the place I am staying in looks so much better when the sun is out. I have decided to wait on here and hang round the beach until the end of the week when my boat leaves. I spend the day drinking the local rum on the beach with the locals and having a few funny cigarettes to pass the time. The palm trees make a welcome change here and provide some welcome relief from the sun [View Full Entry]

The weather is still really bad over here and there seems to be a cold front thourha few countries in the central american area or certainly on the carribean, atlantic coast side at present according to the locals. Find out about the boat schedules from here or just further down the road in another town called 'Punta Gorda' in Southern Belize and it was not too good news....there is not one until the end of the week on thursday or friday from here in Placencia which will cost me about fifty US dollars to reach the northern coats of Honduras or about [View Full Entry]

Up really early again because the bus for the Belizean Southern border leaves at 7am and as there is a hell of a lot of rain at present this trip will take a while because a lot of the roads are unpaved and i estimate around another 5-6 hours in another splendidly comfortable old american school bus. My guide book tells me there are 2-3 boats that leave a week from this Belizean beach village and when I arrive at the Northern Honduras border I can then head inland to San Pedro Sula and see some Mayan Ruins in a place [View Full Entry]

Local House in Belize City
Local House in Belize City
Some local properties in the area which were built when the British were here about 50 years ago.
The bus for belize city promptly leaves at 6am with myself, one italian restaurant owner from placencia, four americans who are on their way to scuba dive in the belizean cayes, two menonites going to visit their son in hospital in Guatemala & the bus drivers wife. Menonites are kind of like a small community of self sufficient amish type people who wear denim dungarees. straw hats & blck boots and the women cover up in traditional dress too. I arrive at a ramshackle bus station in Belize City about midday and try to locate a hostel or hotel room for [View Full Entry]

Well after two months brushing up my spanish language in playa del carmen in mexico I have finally arrived at the border town of Chetumal in southern mexico at around 6pm. I managed to see two movies on the bus down here (goal and the Lion, Witch & the Wardrobe) all in spanish which passed the 5 hour bus journey ok. I found a cheap hostel for 6 pounds a nite right near the bus station & the owner called Armando managed to help me arrange transport over the border to Beliuze City the next morning to leave at 6am because [View Full Entry]

Spend the day at beach in mexico as usual and quite a day it turns out to be. I meet two sisters from Cordoba in Argentina and spend the morning speaking a mix of spanish and english because they have really string italien spanish sounding accents and instead of saying say me llamo (double ll prounounced as a Y) they pronounce it me shhhhhamo which means I am called for the english readers of this. It is by far the most difficult spanish accent I have tried to understand and they give me their email address which makes for interesting times [View Full Entry]

Well, around 21 days to go now and nearly there with all the preparation required. I went to the local doctor last week in Ealing to check my vaccinations and what would be required for my forthcoming travels in the americas. I thought i had everything covered apart from malaria because i visited mexico and cuba last year for around 3 months and i remember having about 12 jabs over the space of 6 weeks.....anyway, had two more jabs and have now been informed that im covered for everything for about the next 5 years at least, which is nice to [View Full Entry]
