Josh from Sweden - Josh

Josh Hi, I'm Josh from Sweden, going to England to practice some English. My love K is going with me, and we are staying in the little fishing village Polruan in Cornwall, in the south west of England, for three weeks. Check in for some pictures during this time!

Well, now everything looks great, but wait to 4.45 in the morning...
After lunch at the tea shop at the corner in Polruan, and a fair well to the village, we got a ride to the airport in Newquay with teacher K and G in there Polo. A car which is small on the outside, but surprisingly spacious inside. We said goodbye to them at the airport and got our first surprise inside the terminal. A looooong queue to the check in desk. Well, that wasn’t a surprise after all, was it? No, but when you were finished with that queue, you had to queue for a machine which provided you with the [View Full Entry]

Thanks H!
Thanks Mum and Dad!

Teacher K is trying to convince us that lords often are really drunk. Is that true? Yes, “drunk as a lord” it is.
Someday has to be the first, some day has to be the last. The third Friday was special. It’s always hard to say good bye. Especially if you know that you probably won’t see each other again. Even if you always go like “Let’s meet again”… you know how it often ends up. There’re new things waiting around the corner. Everything has its time. And place. Anyway, these three weeks have been terrific in all ways. A wonderful place, a friendly and personal atmosphere both in school and in the village, and a new experience for us to be at the [View Full Entry]

I won’t keep my mouth shut.
Time to say goodbye.
Cheers!

Nice place

We all envy you the view from your cottage, R!
Well, time to wrap it up here in Polruan. Nearly three weeks have passed. They went pretty quick, after all. Everything felt a bit slow in the start, as with everything that is new, but then time was speeding up… R from Chile/Stockholm invited us all to his beautiful cottage, with an extraordinary view over the estuary, as a little fare well party. We got to know his wife and children, and had a nice evening with drinks, snacks and lots of laughs. R and his family were leaving one day earlier than the rest of us, due to the rent [View Full Entry]

Welcome!
Let’s take some snap shots
Thanks, guys!

“Don’t worry!”
“Don’t worry!”
“I’ll see in your faces when it’s time to make a turn…”
Of course we had to see the great “estuary” (a word as frequent as “quay” in this place) from a closer distant. Together with my schoolmates and K we hired Dan to take us around the harbour and up the river. We got to see the jetties where the china clay is loaded on big boats, and several others “point of interests”, according to Dan. For instance the place where Led Zeppelin recorded some of there greatest albums, among other artist. A recording studio in the middle of nowhere! Well, near the river, and just a couple of hundred yards from [View Full Entry]

Like a miracle!
The river

Hi again! Just wanted to share a couple of pics with you, from our favourite walking path, facing the Atlantic. Maybe you geographically should call this sea The English Channel, even here at this most south western part of England. But it definitely feels more like an Ocean than a channel, so, The Atlantic Ocean it is! Enjoy! [View Full Entry]

Don’t need a lawn mower over here.
Watch your step!
See you soon back home in good ol’ Sweden!

We skipped church this Sunday too. Too early in the morning (10 am)…So we were picked up by the church goers J and A by the car ferry on Fowey side a couple of hours later.
There is one world famous “must see” in Cornwall, at least for them who consider themselves to be climate conscious and environmental friendly, and you see a lot of those people in this place. I’m talking about “Eden Project”. A couple of huge bubbles (in fact we noticed them from above when we arrived with our flight to Newquay) with a lot of plants, representing different parts of the world and climate zones. With lots of educational signs to that, of course, addressing issues like a sustainable echo system etc. I know that you've been there K and P, haven't you [View Full Entry]

Care for a banana?
Now we are in the Mediterranean zone.

K is considering which question she will ask.
The Hall walk is considered one of the most beautiful walks in England. Of course we had to try it. Well, it would have been difficult not to, since everyone in school talked about it day after day… The path differ a lot from the coast path, since it goes along the banks of Fowey River and the Pont Pill Creek. Steep slopes and lots of oaks and hazel. In many places the undergrowth is heavy, and the hazel forms a tunnel to walk through, which shelter you from wind and rain. This day, though, was rather good with some sunshine [View Full Entry]

Oh, scary things, isn’t it?
Low tide.
Polruan to the left.

Just want you to know that we get along pretty well with the seagulls now a day. K says they “speak to her”… Don’t know if that may be is more of a statement of K´s mental status after a couple of weeks in this little village totally dominated by the “singing” of seagulls, or if it’s something she really experiences. They have a broad variety of sounds to perform, so it could be rather musical sometimes.… Anyway, she appears to try to contact them through her painting. But, to tell you the truth, I get along with them rather good [View Full Entry]

K´s view through the roof window in the attic room where she does her painting.
A way to come to term with things?
Time to shut the window.

Right now this is my view from “today’s office”, the quay in Polruan. Just a few steps from our cottage. When you see it from the Fowey side, it looks like the next picture. As you can see, it’s a lot of palm trees in the neighbourhood. This place has a nice touch of Mediterranean style over it. It’s rare that the temperature is sinking below zero during the winters, which make it possible to have gardens with sub tropical plants. Anyway, I’m sitting here by the harbour, watching the passenger ferry shuttle from one quay to the other, and that [View Full Entry]

Watch out!
A from Gothenburg and young K from Oslo.
Funny questions?

Finally, at last, it came! The famous English weather, anticipated by our teacher K the whole weak. A gigantic, persistent low pressure has taken the British islands as a hostage. What to do a Saturday afternoon with the rain constantly drizzling outside? Sitting in the cottage, in front of the log fire, with a nice cup of tea and a Agatha Christie novel? Naah! We’re Vikings, for chrissake. We went for a two hour walk in the rain. No rubber boots unfortunately. We got pretty wet, and to be really sure of that we enjoyed a bath when we got home, [View Full Entry]

Nice walking paths all over the place. This one is taking us along the slopes of the Pont Pill creek.
A disco party at the beach tonight, anyone?
Pretty fascinating, that you, thanks to the tide, actually have the opportunity to walk on the bottom of the creek and see what it looks like.
