| 4th August 2009 Cheryl | Hujambo! - From: Here Comes The Rain Again... I can hardly believe it's been 9 months either. I think you're right in only having a bit of furniture. Better air flow. :) I'll try and get some goodies sent to you later this month. I have to tell you that from Chris's post, Kenya sounds positively cosmopolitan. Seriously, the story about your attack was very disturbing. Please be safe!! |
| 28th July 2009 Neha | - From: The Missing Week... I agree that people who stand for making this world better sometimes no one realizes their point.I am from India and much of the myths and things talked about in this blog seems I have seen.I mean even in India animals are abused, people or streets, poverty everywhere and thats due to our population and our system as such.Almost all the things you have written is what happens in India too.In India however there are levels like upper level, middle level and the low people. For the low people this is the reality.Change comes not in a day.Change comes by doing it,Thanks John and all the gang who does it for someone.I will keep you all in my prayers.I wish as Americans who got everything so simple this can be a start point to think and always be thankful and yeah always having the heart to know also what the other part of the world suffer. Thanks again.Bye |
| 27th July 2009 Megan Venzin | Wow! - From: The Missing Week... You are a dedicated friend Chris! That is a long trip to take, and it sounds like it was truly amazing. Good for you, dude! |
| 21st July 2009 Karen | Kay and me - From: The Missing Week... John, you do not know me but your mom is one of my best friends. She has coffee with me at my house weekly and we solve all our problems and those of the world and that includes our kids :) I keep track of you through her but this blog was the most amazing thing I have read in a long time. I have a greater appreciation for you and your work and sacrifices as well as how "rich" I am in comparison to the life you and your countrymen are living. May you have peace and more than that safety. The gang incident was unreal...Shalom. |
| 20th July 2009 JKS | Great trip - From: The Missing Week... Glad you went & thanks for the story |
| 12th July 2009 Megan Venzin | Happy Fourth! - From: America's Fall of the Derg Celebration John! Sounds like an eventful Fourth of July. Nothing says Independence like having the freedom to hack up carcasses and personally transport them to a sweaty guy who grinds the animal remains into an edible patty. DELICIOUS! And what's a holiday without injury? It sounds like you are having a truly amazing time. I love that you have taken on all of these projects. You're really making the most of your time in the Peace Corps. I admire that so much. I spent my Fourth of July eating Reindeer Corndogs at a street festival in Anchorage, AK. It is so beautiful up there! You will have to visit sometime when you get the chance. It's totally up your alley! I went white water rafting, mountain climbing and I even did the back country Stampede Trail Jeep Safari where Chris McCandles died (the Into the Wild guy). The best part about Alaska in the summer is, THE SUN NEVER GOES DOWN! I hope to talk to you soon. I'm moving to NYC at the end of August, so I'm busy wrapping things up here in Cincinnati. Stay in touch! |
| 8th July 2009 Cheryl | Jambo! - From: America's Fall of the Derg Celebration Mike's in SA right now, and I leave for Kenya on Saturday. We'll be right next door to you! Terrible drought in Kasigau, so we've been told no showers while in bush camp. Ugh. That's 2 weeks, Johnny. You and Brian would have had a heyday. |
| 6th July 2009 Shkala | - From: America's Fall of the Derg Celebration Well, I must say . . . I'm a bit jealous of your 4th of July celebration. It sounded much more eventful and fun than mine was. I didn't even get to enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs. I just went to Brew Co. and listened to Canago. It seems like your having an awesome and a very self-fulfilling time over there. Keep up the great work and stay safe. Oh, and I still haven't received a letter from you, but I'm looking forward to it! Talk to you soon, Buddy. Peace~Shkala |
| 6th July 2009 Tsega | Country Code - From: America's Fall of the Derg Celebration Sounds like you had a cool 4th... this time next week I will be leaving the States for a month in Ethiopia... I can't wait... anyways the country code for Ethiopia is 251. Tsega |
| 19th June 2009 Tsega Igwebe | Nice Adventure - From: A Story of Sorts... Hi there... sometimes the best adventures are the unplanned or unauthorized ones... Sounds like you are having a blast there and sometimes it takes you going on a journey and returning home to get the feeling that you belong somewhere (I think that made sense)... Anyways I head to Addis next month I will have to check out this Mexican resturant that you mentioned... LOL... Anyways your last blog was from May hopefully things are well there... |

| 4th May 2009 Cheryl | Oh, my... - From: Happy Belated International Labor Day!!!! I didn't realize you all had the option of ET. How does that affect your stipend? Do you get reassigned? Why do you think Ehtiopia is like that? I've only been to two African countries, but never was it so bad in either one. Are they simply resentful of American NGO's? What about other countries' (sp?) representatives? Are they similarly harrassed? What a pain in the booty! Hang in there, John. |
| 4th May 2009 Elysia | - From: Long time no see.... That's amazing you are doing a project on sex workers. I would be really interested in hearing your work with that. Thanks for keepin us all posted on what's goin on in Africa! Have a great day John! |
| 3rd May 2009 Abebe | - From: Happy Belated International Labor Day!!!! Hello John.. First I want to tell you that your 'blog' is not worth of the time that need to read let alone for replying.but for the disapointement I got from reading it I want to say you a couple os sentences.YOu are in Ethiopia not because you wanted to do miracles for the country or it's peoples.Rather you are there because a dumb guy like you have no option to win his bread, than going some where in the name of the poors and mourn all the time.I really wonder if you lost a thing that is good about Ethiopia..Iam sure the workers of other NGOs has no any intention of returning soon as you said. But if they do who cares, anybody knows that they are there for a simple reason,,,,, |
| 14th April 2009 Cheryl | Soccer Blues - From: Long time no see.... I know what made me tear up was the thought of kids kicking around a plastic bag with a sock in it. Do I need to send some soccer balls, John? Please note my email address is no longer cheryl@alivebg.org. If that was my smarty husband with the English remark, just ignore him. He's in the throes of editing a thesis. He suffers mightily. I miss you, John! Keep experimenting with the cooking. |
| 13th April 2009 Mike | keep 'em coming - From: Long time no see.... Hi, John- I'm enjoying your blogs. The English in this one was so good I almost teared up! cheers, Mike |

| 26th December 2008 Emily Lamon | Miss ya! - From: Christmas!!! hey hey! i miss you lots more then i could have ever imagined. This morning i was the last person to wake up, which was very weird. We played this board game called "Last Word" which was something that would be right up your alley! You have a stack of cards with categories and a stack with letters of the alphabet, and you have to think of a word that fits in the category and starts with the letter. The person that can get the last one in before the buzzer gets the point. With your quick wit, i think you would be awesome. We saved you a christmas cracker/popper. :] i know you hear it from everyone, but we all miss you! Merry Christmas, i love you very much. em |

| 16th December 2008 allyse | - From: 107 weeks left... hey john. i am glad i get to hear from you as often as i do. it seems like you're learning a lot about life. i am just working; i can't really tell if i'm learning much other than trying to get out of debt lol. i talked to a friend and he said to try to say this to you. i'm not sure if it's the language you are speaking or not, but i think he said "endemen nah/nesh" means good morning or how are you, i'm not really sure. i think one is feminine and the other is masculine. again, i'm not sure if you actually speak this or even what it means, but i'm curious. i certainly do miss you, and i'm glad to hear that you are safe. you will be in my thoughts. i love you. |
