A trip out to Barrington National Park for our first hike in the rainforest. We saw our first wallabies and water dragons. And then on the road again heading for the Warrumbungle national park, camping on the way at the Mendoorum Rest Area - this really is the middle of nowhere with a few houses and one dodgy pub serving kangaroo burgers. Camping is by the river with loads of mosquitos. Next day off to the Warrumbungles where we arrived in the middle of day and decided to climb the Breadknife, this is a beautiful walk but it really was too hot, temperatures reached 40 degrees and we had to stop regularly. Despite the 5 litres of water that we took we were dehydrated on our return. The national park campsite was spectacular with views of ... read more

Our first stop was at Freemans Waterhole near Cessnok, a few hour drives north of Sydney. We had contacted a couple, Jamie and Lisa but they were flying out to america so would not be around but they had a mate, Aubray, close by who didn't do couchsurfing but liked having people to stay so off we went. Aubray turned out to be a very cool and quite alternative guy who had for a while lived in an alternative community near Byron Bay but had now relocated to the middle of nowhere for a more peaceful lifestyle. He had brought his house with him, on the back of a lorry, the build was now pretty much complete but he had big plans for improvements including adding rooms for travelers to stay. Aubray welcomed us with a ... read more

The next day we caught our flight in the evening to Sydney, arriving at 8 in the morning. After much effort Amel had managed to organise a couchsurf in Sydney with Lois and her family. She lives about 30 minutes outside Sydney, on the train line from the airport so getting to hers with all our bags was easy. Lois kindly picked us up from the airport. They have a lovely house with swimming pool, a great place to recover from jet lag. Lois lives there with her husband Rodney and children, Joel and Emma. Lois is a fitness instructor with a bit of a passion for cycling and had no problem dropping me on the hills on our ride. She is planning to cycle on her own from Perth back to Sydney - good luck! ... read more

Twelve hour flight and eight hours ahead brought us to KL first thing in the morning and to an great but bargain hotel, the best combination. Amel had organised some Couchsurfing activity before our arrival, not a bed for the night this time but a party on the 27th floor of some posh high rise in the golden triangle as they call it. The guy who’s party it was describes himself on his profile as being semi-retired but still trading on the European market and also that he’s being “mentored by people at the top of their fields” so we arrived thinking we were going to meet a prize dickhead, in fact he was quite nice in the flesh, perhaps his girlfriend writes his profile. He has a Malayan girlfriend which I guess is why he ... read more

Arrived in Sicily late at night and found a campsite where we pitched for the night and awoke to a sunny day. Campsite turned out to be closed so we could not pay, bad weather was predicted for the next few days so we decided to head back to the Italian mainland and another stop with Aziz, our Couchsurfing friend from our trip down through Europe. Great to see him again but the weather turned out atrocious so we headed north. Our initial aim was a walk up Mount Etna but still the weather was bad with no predicted improvement for a few days so we carried on north and back to our friends in Napoli. We spent two nights in Napoli. Our hosts took us out on the back of their bikes - this has ... read more

25th September: The picture below shows us getting out of the car on the ferry from Dover to Calais We spent the night at a B&B just outside the town followed by breakfast with some hairy Belgium bikers. 26th September Then onto the autoroutes through France, Belgium, Luxembourg back to France and then Switzerland and a night stop with Amel’s friend Anila an Basal. Getting used to the concept of marriage, we have both been single for so long…. We are also now jobless and homeless, it will take a while to appreciate both. Definitely picked up one speeding ticket and I guess they post them to the UK? 27th September The next leg was from Basel to a small town outside Bologna to our first Couchsurfing stop. We were hosted by Sylvia and her sister ... read more
