| 21st July 2008 Darlene | Backroads with Max & John - From: There and Back Again Welcome Home! What an incredible time. All that planning, and research seemed to have come so together and enjoyed. How great to have this practice run prior to retirement. Cheers to you both. Like Dorothy would say "There's no Place like Home" |
| 21st July 2008 Jim S | welcome back! - From: There and Back Again What a wonderful trip through America's heartland. And you got the bannister from the old homestead! I just think that is so amazingly cool!! :) Glad you made it back safe and sound! |
| 20th July 2008 caitlin | home again home again jiggity jig - From: There and Back Again for some reason i couldn't read your last two blogs for a while....and actually talked to you before i could finish the last installments. but i'm glad you're home and that you had such a wonderful trip that i could look forward to reading every night. thanks for the blog....and, you know, being my awesome parents and all. |
| 20th July 2008 Richard | Next trip - From: There and Back Again Max and John: Thanks for a wonderful trip. I enjoyed every mile of it and look forward to your next trip (maybe to the Maryland area?). I am about to DIE with envy for the items that you were able to gather from Toulon (and other places in times past). When you come to this area, you'll have to bring all of those items with you to show me! |
| 20th July 2008 Pete | Bienvenidos a su casa! - From: There and Back Again Welcome home, Max and John! Loved hearing your adventures and following your wonderful journey! Thank you for "taking us along!" Wasn't is GREAT not having your SecureID fob with you? Now, THAT'S a real vacation! Here's to many, mnay more! (Glad neither one of you tossed the other out the door on the hiway! You're ready for retirement!!) |
| 19th July 2008 Jennifer | Leaving Elko... - From: There and Back Again You'll just have to go back for that visit to Elko's sites, I guess. There's a very good reason to avoid rest stops and just hiot up gas stations. The facilities are generally in better shape. From Elko, I stop in Winnemucca, Lovelock, Sparks, and Truckee, so getting stuck in traffic, as one inevitably does, is at least manageable. Glad you made it back okay. |
| 19th July 2008 Theresa | Welcome Home....... - From: There and Back Again What a wonderful trip, it was great taking the journey with you in photos. I'm so looking forward to my trip to BC next week. I was thinking of doing a blog but I really want to stay away from a computer for awhile after this work week :) |
| 19th July 2008 Lisa | Sums up your trip - From: There and Back Again The picture that has the text "This sums up our trip", is exactly what vacation is all about. The research, the family, the scenery is all great. That picture is what you want from a vacation. No stress, no worries, just a very relaxed-looking couple enjoying themselves. Welcome back. |
| 18th July 2008 John and Max | Elko Encore - From: Day 20: Salt Lake City to Elko, Nevada Jennifer, I wish we would have gotten into Elko in time to see your parents. They are delightful and we would have loved to have spent more time with them. Maybe next time? |
| 18th July 2008 John and Max | Spumanti? - From: Day 20: Salt Lake City to Elko, Nevada John, Spumanti is not spumoni...ice cream is much different from terrible carbonated wine..... Your lovin wife.... |
| 18th July 2008 Jennifer | Elko Redux - From: Day 20: Salt Lake City to Elko, Nevada I see you gave The Comfort Inn another chance... The Dinner Inn is supposed to be the best of Elko's several Basque restaurats, so I'm glad you had a good dinner there. The speed of your trip home will have a lot to do with how much road work you run into. Nevada does a lot of road work during the week, which is one of the reasons I like driving up and back on weekend days. Happy trails... |
| 17th July 2008 John and Max | White knuckled... - From: Day 19: Through Colorado and Into Salt Lake City, Utah That would be Max... |
| 17th July 2008 Lisa | Colorado = Beautiful - Winter (for me) - From: Day 19: Through Colorado and Into Salt Lake City, Utah Isn't Colorado beautiful. I loved the national park. Being at 10,000+ is a little breath-taking (good and bad). I just wouldn't want to be there in the winter. So I couldn't tell who was writing the blog - who is afraid of heights? |
| 17th July 2008 caitlin | wow! - From: Day 19: Through Colorado and Into Salt Lake City, Utah i can't even imagine how amazing the canyon would have been in real life - just the pictures are astounding. |
| 17th July 2008 Scott | Worm holes to other dimensions - From: Day 18: Leaving Denver Sounds like the thin air is getting to you too! Remember to bring a map and compass to Salt Lake CIty - all those weird grid-point or ring and spoke addresses they use there might confuse your GPS. :) |
| 16th July 2008 caitlin | your blogs - From: Day 18: Leaving Denver i think i almost don't want you to come home so i can keep reading your wonderful blogs and learning about this big ol country of ours through your eyes (since i haven't had the chance to see it myself yet). but really, i can't wait to see you again! |
| 15th July 2008 Jim S | awwwww.... - From: Day 17: Second Day in Denver What a sweet baby!!! : ) He's so cute!!! and COOL shot of the hotel corridor!!! It looks like a shot out of Kubrick's The Shining!! |
| 15th July 2008 caitlin | wait a second... - From: Day 17: Second Day in Denver is that christopher that i know? the one that threw me around in the pool when i was just a wee thing (alright, alright....i was never really that wee.....) around the time of your wedding and whatnot? oh. and the first photo of the baby will come in handy when he is old enough to be blackmailed (probably about the time he starts dating). what a cutie pie! |
| 14th July 2008 Darlene | Wow-What an Incredible Trip - From: Day 12 I have not ever particpated with a travel blog. It was so good to see and hear about your travels. I would like to take a road trip someday and would like to do a travel blog. Can hardly wait to hear the rest of the stories. Thanks! Don't rush back...enjoy- |
| 14th July 2008 Scott | Hey travelers! - From: Day 16: Is It Really Day 16? Good morning travelers. I'm just back from vacation myself - one on which I didn't use any electronics - and It's it's been real nice spending the last half-hour enjoying yours. I'm glad I read your email first. Now to all the other emails. Safe journey |
| 14th July 2008 Lisa | Get the massage... NOW! - From: Day 16: Is It Really Day 16? John, if you do not get the massage, you will really be in trouble. You are on vacation and should be doing vacation "things". Max, I have seen you in action AND heard many stories. I'm convinced that you can get John to get a massage. Lisa |
| 14th July 2008 John and Max | Neo-Sod - From: Day 15: Westward, Ho! I ove it! It is such a green concept! literally-except for the brownish part. |
| 13th July 2008 Richard | Apartment - From: Day 15: Westward, Ho! Now I know the style of my apartment--Neo-Sod. Your info on Buffalo Bill reminded me that my dad's family lived near Denver when Cody died in Denver and was buried near Denver. Dad's father told the kids that they could go to the funeral or get a new Croquet set. As I and my two brothers watched him slaughter us as we were playing in 1972, there was no question which they had chosen. |
| 13th July 2008 caitlin redpath | phew! - From: Day 15: Westward, Ho! i was starting to get worried about you two after all those missing blogs didn't show up! but i'm glad it was just some computer mumbo-jumbo. i think we've found john's new look!!! ps- i'm very excited about my western themed christmas stocking. i hope it has a pony in it...... |
| 13th July 2008 jlw1 | Westward, Ho, Indeed... - From: Day 15: Westward, Ho! Well, gosh, you'll just have to spend some time at the Northeastern Nevada Western Museum when you pass back through Elko again. And give my folks a call, if you think about it.... |
| 11th July 2008 Richard | Ready! - From: Day 12 Watermelon salad?! I'm ready! |
| 10th July 2008 Jim S | - From: Day 12 i'm just trying to around the idea that there are wineries in the midwest!!! :) John needs to give a full report on their quality when he gets back!! |
| 10th July 2008 John and Max | Watermelon Salad - From: Day 12 And we miss you too, sweet girl. The watermelon salad is a splendid idea! They don't have fruits and veggies much out here in the hinterlands. We'll call you as soon as we get home. |
| 10th July 2008 caitlin | rest stops - From: Day 12 i remember rest stops looking a little like the ones pictured on my road trips up to washington. i am eating a delicious tuscan sandwich and missing you both terribly. come home soon and i will make you a yummy watermelon salad.....deal? |
| 10th July 2008 Lisa | Rest Stops and Travel Info - From: Day 12 You are sooo correct. California's rest stops are disgraceful. You don't realize how bad they are until you hit the road. Jim and I had taken many side trips based on those fliers we picked up at the Tourist Info stations. I can't believe you are headed west again. I'm sure it is more of a shock for the two of you. Enjoy the rest of your trip and travel safely! |
| 10th July 2008 Theresa | Be glad you're not in Auburn today! - From: Day 10 continued and 11 The picture of the clear skies at night are beautiful; a far cry from what the skies look like here in the foothills. Today was horrible; 109 degrees and the smokiest day since the fires started; it's pretty depressing. Enjoy the rest of your vacation in healthier weather conditions! Theresa |
| 9th July 2008 Jim S | - From: Day 10 continued and 11 that is so great that you got the bannister, a piece of personal family history! items can tell tales, if people really listen! I envy not only your trip, but to have an actual piece of the old homestead, that is pretty special! |
| 9th July 2008 Jennifer | Lovely bit of history - From: Day 10 continued and 11 It's wonderful that you've connected with people who can fill in the blanks regarding the history of the area for you. |
| 8th July 2008 Richard | Sympathetic - From: Day 10: Toulon I'm trying to be sympathetic about the heat and humidity, but it's hard--I grew up in Mississippi. However, getting to visit Toulon again must me exciting. And this time you know where the best (or worst) coffee is and the best sights (in Toulon: sight) to see. |
| 8th July 2008 Adri | WOW, THANKS FOR SHARING PICTURES - From: Day 7: Chicago on the Fourth of July I did not realize how beautiful Chicago is and the historical art museum looks like a must. As Caitlin said, you two look great and relaxed. So glad you are enjoying this well deserved vacation!. Looking forward to your travelblog every day! Adri |
| 8th July 2008 Jennifer | Toulon indeed... - From: Day 10: Toulon Which undoubtedly bears no resemblance whatever to its French namesake... I remember being in Illinois in late June and it was unbearably hot and humid. July has got to be worse. More power to you both. If you end up near Springfield, IL, let me know. I'm related to about half the population there, what with cousins, 2nd cousins, 3rd cousins at various levels of removal (it's where my dad is from). One of my cousins raises Clydesdales there. |
| 6th July 2008 Richard | Laundry - From: Day 8: Indiana and Michigan You had to do laundry after only 8 days? When I travel that would have meant only one change of clothes. |
| 5th July 2008 caitlin | chi-town - From: Day 7: Chicago on the Fourth of July well you two are just the cutest ever. ever. what a wonderful picture of two very happy and relaxed looking parents.... i remember getting misty eyed at the art institute, myself.....i think it was the surrealism section though....all those magrittes and found object sculptures ....and the exquisite corpse drawings! oh! how fun your day sounds. sure wish i was there with you....then at least we all would have missed fireworks together :) |
| 4th July 2008 Lisa | Navy Pier, Pizzario Uno and White Castles - From: Day 6: Chicago If you get a chance, check out the Navy Pier. Also, you can't go to Chicago without going to Pizzeria Uno. Get the smallest size pizza you can and be prepared to take some with you. Enjoy your day off from driving! Lisa |
| 4th July 2008 Jennifer | Chicago! - From: Day 6: Chicago Well, congratulations on getting to Chicago! 4th of July should be pretty lively. Hope John is feeling better soon, and that you enjoy your stay. |
| 3rd July 2008 Adri | I bet you miss your California wine - From: Day Five: Into Iowa Max & John, love the pics of old americana victorian and could smell the perfume all the way to Cali. Tell John to go easy on the Gallo and the knee. Something very mistic about the weather and love the cloud shots. Look forward to the next report. Adri! |
| 3rd July 2008 caitlin | thunder and lightning and hail, oh my - From: Day Five: Into Iowa a thunderstorm is probably much more fun and exciting when you're not driving through it and just reading about it .....on your parents' blog. you two have a blog. ha. we live in the future. would you please beam me a picture of iowa corn? |
| 2nd July 2008 Jila | Hello from SF - From: Day Four: Into Nebraska Through your eyes and great commentaries, I am experiencing some places in America that I've never been to! |
| 2nd July 2008 Jennifer | Traveling across Nebraska - From: Day Four: Into Nebraska Comedian Ron Shock had a routine where he talked about traveling across the country, and said of the unrelenting flatness of Nebraska that it was best viewed when driving through a heavy snowstorm, "in fact, the guide books recommend seeing it that way." Sounds like when this is over, you should write a book about your travel adventures. |
| 2nd July 2008 jrst | Nebraska - From: Day Four: Into Nebraska cool shots of Nebraska! and the accurate term was used: hypnotic. i drove across Nebraska with my dad when i was a kid and the FLATNESS, it was wild!!! the flatness just blows your California mind!!! and you forgot the Neil Young CDs??? :O we need to airmail them to where ever you guys are! A roadtrip without Neil??? Unthinkable! |
| 2nd July 2008 Theresa | - From: Day Four: Into Nebraska Hi John and Max - These travel blogs are great; love seeing and hearing about your trip and thanks for the advice on skipping Cheyenne and Laramie; I'll remember that when I take a road trip East! Glad John was able to get the meds for his cough, hope that clears up soon. Happy trails and enjoy the rest of your journey......... |
| 2nd July 2008 Richard | Happy - From: Day 3: Across Wyoming Max, I've never seen you so happy. This is, of course, because 1) you're leaving your cares behind, and 2) you're traveling east. |
| 2nd July 2008 Richard | Clouds - From: Day 3: Across Wyoming Wow! Look at those clouds! There's one that looks like a cotton ball! Cool! |
