Intriguing Iran - From: Iran
Hi Joel, These photos of Iran are magnificent as is your writing. You surely have absorbed so much of the culture. I also had a friend Mehdi in Mashad who took me around for a couple of days; makes me question our Western preoccupation with ourselves and the rights of the individual at the expense of community. Safe travels wherever you go. Keep the brilliant writing and pics coming!

Great blog Joel! I wish more westerners could travel there. My experience here in NZ and Australia when I say I am from Iran is that most people are about to have heart attacks LOL they probably read the "news" too much and it is good to see these blog entries coming. I like your comparison of Iran to its neighbour countries. Thanks :-)

Joel, that was absolutely phenomenal. Words cannot describe how I wish i was there, this thought made all the more desirable and unbearable by the fact that im at currently work wasting the day away. Pakistan Zindabad indeed - From: Pakistan Zindabad!
Hey Joel, I dont know if you remember me, but i am a friend of your Mum's. It was so great to read your blog on Pakistan. I lived there for five years growing up, and have subsequently gone back four times in the past 10 years to climb in the Karakorams. So it certainly feels like a second home to me and your commentarty certainly made me home sick. One of the greatest frustrations i have is convincing people who have never been to Pakistan that i actually feel safer there than i do in Pristine Perth. And i might add find the Pakistanis far more welcoming and less rascist than our own culture. It was cool to see what an awesome time you had there. Thanks for a great blog Michael Dunjey

Fabulous Pakistan - From: Pakistan Zindabad!
It was a pretty nice blog or for that matter a Travelogue that I came across after sometime. Joel, man you've got some writing skills and I am getting impatient in knowing about your experiences in Iran. Pakistan certainly offers extraordinary places when it comes to the topography. Not many countries on the world map can be found with one of the highest mountain ranges, lush green meadows, the longest glaciers and snow walks, stunnigly beautiful valleys, rivers, at the same time deserts, beaches, fields, historical landmarks, Indus Valley - remains of one of the oldest human societies, Gandhara civilization and above all the best possible hosts and friendly people ( as you have already mentioned in your blog). Overall Pakistan is one of the best possible tourist destination. Unfortunately, so called WAR AGAINST TERROR has jolted Pakistan but international media has exagerated it to the maximum, potraying Pakistan as a death valley to the people outside like you've given the reference of Times of India in your blog. Foriegner's kidnapping/ harassment is confined to the tribal bordering areas of the country only, while all other areas (which is more than 99.5% of the total area) offers the best to the tourists/ travelers that you must've felt during your stay. Looking fwd to your Iran Travelogue.

After spending a year travelling around the world, although we did not visit India on this trip, you summed up the travelling experience of India very well. And your good name?... - From: Stretching the comfort zone in India!
Stumbled across your blog. It's a good sum up of your feelings as a backpacker when in India - a mixture of frustration, fascination, and sheer hilarity! I'd also recommend reading "Holy Cow" as it does a good job of describing the transition of feelings towards India as your time there progresses. Funny, too. I head to India for the third time soon, with a mixture of dread and excitement!!!

More bizarre than the useless pic of the swan is that other photo of the cloak room girl. Numerous intriguing questions spring to mind 1) Why did you stay when the others left, I hope it wasn't for her. 2) She looks downright hostile, I got a little scared looking at her 3) Why the big stupid grin on your face. Will we ever get a straight answer, I doubt it very much.

However a couple of the aussie guys i'm travelling with bought some ledderhosen and spoke minimal deutsch and got into this all german tent no questions asked. Its a wicked festival though. ...take a detour to sibiu. nice old german city, the new cultural capital of europe in 2007 (along with luxembourg). the city is amazing, one of the oldest cities built by the germans settled there around 15th century. after sighisoara go to cluj for the bars and clubs, the ebst parties i have ever been. Dracula is not real, but people in the entire Romania believe in things like ghosts, spirits and haunting souls. there is also a local halloween on nov 30, the night of st andrews. you have to have garlic under your pillow not to be visited by a ghost...

further on Dracula - From: Searching for Dracula....
Hi....we did the search for Dracula as well. Guess you missed Lake Snagov (just outside of Bucharest) and the island on which there is a small church with what is supposed to be Dracula's tomb (tho it is empty). There were a lot of candles around a stone slab and this dwarf lady forbade us to take photos (tho I did). Dracula (Vlad, if you will) is actually quite a folk hero cause he was very much a nationalist who fought against the Turkish occupiers. Enjoy the rest of your journey!!!!!!

Nice work Joel, this was a really well-written account of Sarajevo's history and also of your feelings and impressions while you stayed there. Your comments on the inefficacy of the UN in Sarajevo are interesting Joel. We learned in Rwanda of the UN not responding to the crisis there and thereby being culpable in the genocide that resulted. Kofi Annan later apologised but that is little comfort to the 900,000+ killed and the many left scared both physically and mentally by that atrocity. Hopefully they will do a better job in Lebanon. Thanks again for the opportunity to share your travels. Love Penny

Hey Kel most of the time we got around on louages these are combi vans that do most routes. if i remember the colours right its yellow stripe-regional, blue stripe-between bigger towns and red stripe-the long hauls between major cities. you sometimes have a wait a while until the louage is full but i think we waited max 30 minutes. Apart from buses which seem pretty infrequent this is about the only way to get around. and its pretty cheap too! :P

Hey Kel Great to hear that youre going to Tunisia, youll love it! The Sidi Driss cost 16 Dinar per night with breakfast included. (Dinner is an extra 5 Dinah and is a great couscous and meat meal with omelettes and watermelon) I was with one friend in a 6 person room and I think there were only about 5 other people spread out throughout the whole hotel, most of them backpackers. It seems that package tours dont include sleeping at the hotel but at about 9am the bus loads of tourists start arriving and continue throughout the day. I became part of the set, and their photos, as they watched me eating my breakfast in one of the smaller rooms above the courtyard... :P Hope that helps! Sobering experiences - From: Stand and fight or run... RUN!!!
Your time in Krakow certainly won't be easily forgotten. I appreciated your reflections on the Death Camps and as you say it is a place that everyone should visit if they are able. Make sure you read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Take care out walking at night!!

Your photos are great too - and thanks for your postcard. Looking forward to reading more of your hair-raising adventures! Take care, Lots of love, Nana-Ruth XX

great times =) - From: Back to Budapest!
great write-up and photos joel, (especially that shot of the szechenzyi baths - awesome!), sounded like a very fun trip! that shot you took from the liberty statue: that's right next to the hostel i stayed in while i was in budapest! not as much fun as staying with hungarian friends of course, but then again, at least i didn't have to climb a tree to get into my room each night. =P

Good work for scoring some free housing joel, especially what looks like a great, big house! Despite looking great in your winter photos, Budapest seems to look even nicer with the colour of Spring.

I want to make a movie about your life! - From: I left my towel in Casablanca!
Joel, I've been following your adventures with increasing interest and think they'd be the perfect subject for my next blockbuster. I'm hoping you'll agree to take some time out from your vagabonding adventures to play yourself in the movie - maybe next year? At any rate, next time you're in L.A., I'll have my people call your people, and we'll do lunch.

What a great place! - From: I left my towel in Casablanca!
Joel, what a wonderful time you had in Morocco. I have been reading through the chapter on M in LP Africa on a Shoestring and it sounds like you got to see a wide variety of what Morroco has to offer. I'd love to see the Atlas Mountains and wander around the medinas and bazaars. The mint tea sounds delicious!

amazing - From: I left my towel in Casablanca!
Yo joel, morroco sounds like a truly amazing experience. Just to see such a different culture and environment (especially to the cosmopolitan life of europe) would be great. The mosque looks really cool as well. Now i really want to go there too, but i hope its cheap there! Then again, homer simpson only gets fined US$2 for smuggling souvenirs out of the country, so im sure that it cant be too costly!

Awesome text and photos Joel! I'm impressed how quickly you've picked snowboarding up; I'll be looking forward to getting a few expert lessons from you when I come to visit! But what's this about it being "my newest favourite sport" - surely this can't mean soccer's been relegated to No.2 for the first time in your life?! =P Ah, if only they had snow-covered slopes in Thailand too...

man, i'm really jealous now...seeing your awesome photos makes me wish i was back in germany! it seems 'das ist mein Hamburger' probably the most remembered german phrase by many year 8 students from rossmoyne, though! i hope your skiing continues to improve...if that was one thing i regretted was not staying long enough last time to learn to ski properly...i only had one attempt and as you described, it was quite frustrating! hope you continue to have fun!
