Perth It felt bizarre waking up in a actual bed in a flat on that Saturday morning after completing the Nullabor trip. Karen, Sharon and I had rented a self catering apartment for a week in Perth before the next part of our journey. The apartment was pleasant, basic but comfortable, with a lovely swimming pool and a balcony to unwind and relax on in the evenings. We just chilled out for a week, catching up on sleep, slowing down, washing all our clothes after being the bush for ten days, sipping wine, chatting and reading! We did have one day out where we met Markus for lunch in Fremantle. What a beautiful picturesque place, so quaint, full of quirky little art shops and boutiques and an abundance of coffee shops. We had a very ... read more
DAY ONE It's time, its 7am on Christmas Eve and the bus has arrived........oh my god this is it. Karen, Sharon and I gathered our things together and loaded up. We all struggled downstairs with our luggage, which seems to be getting heavier and heavier as the months go on, even though I seem to be offloading things each time I re-pack for the next part of my journey. The tour guide introduced himself as Leith, he first comment to me was that on reading the list of names on the trip he noticed the name Jo Haslam and thought to himself, "why is the boss's wife on this trip?" - you will never believe that the owners of Nullabor Traveller are called Craig and JO HASLAM!!!! how uncanny is that? That is the first time ... read more
I can't believe that the time had come for me to see my son Bobby again, and to meet his new girlfriend Toni, for the first time. As I stepped off the plane and got my luggage I looked around for Bobby as he was due to arrive about an hour earlier. I walked outside and immediately saw Toni, sitting on her luggage (I had seen photos of her). We introduced ourselves and I knew immediately that we were going to get along. We got a taxi to our respective hotels then met up for a coffee at Starbucks and caught up with all the latest gossip. Over the next few days Sharon and I did a lot of walking and sight seeing throughout Sydney, including the obvious Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Everything seemed reassuringly ... read more
Back in New Zealand - who would have believed it after only 9 month since I was last here! I felt like I'd never left. It was so good to see Debbie Steve & Sam again, I really felt like I'd come home! Well our arrival was slightly marred due to the fact that we were stranded at Singapore Airport due to be unable to land because of an electrical storm which was awesome. We were flying with Malaysian Airlines, which I have so say were pretty good. I sat with my face pressed against the window mesmerized by what I was watching. I just couldn't stop looking at the storm I found it so exciting, Sharon was petrified and wouldn't look out the window! During the storm I saw that the clouds was massive and ... read more
Malaysia gained its independence in 1963 and we are going to Borneo which forms part of the Malaysian Semanjung (Pennisula) to try to reflect on our lives - each of us have our own experiences and problems but hopefully we can try and come to terms with them. We made it to the jungle on four long boats loaded to the hilt with our belongings and enough supplies to last us all for the week. It took about 1 1/2hrs up river, which was such an amazing experience, the scenery, the culture, the air, everything was just breathtaking. I knew from this moment that I was going to love every minute of this journey. Brian would have been so proud of me today, 29th November 2008, I climbed to the highest point in the Batang Ai ... read more
Selamat Datang...........well guys I'm nearing the end of my work at Negara Zoo, my team - now known as "Slimey Slimey" because most of what we touched was.....you guessed it.......slimely, and Chloe, one of our team, was always saying it, so we called ourselves the Slimey Slimey Team!!! Being part of a team with such wonderful people was amazing, we all pulled together, in the Zoo, back at home and when we went out in the evenings to the local town. Of course my friend Sharon Simpson has now joined me for the remainder of my trip. We go back some 34 years, we were at boarding school together in the Isle of Wight. It is lovely sharing this journey with such a dear friend. I hope that the work we did at the Zoo has ... read more
I've been here at Zoo Negara for 8 days now and feel as though I've lived here all my life. I am living in a wooden house, which has 3 bedrooms, a shared lounge and kitchen with two bathrooms. I share with 3 other girls, Sharon, Emma and Chloe, and a man called Alan. Fortunately, we all get along really well, even though we all have fairly strong characters we bring out the best in each other which is great. As a group we sing, joke, tease, share, help and listen to each other. I get up at 6.45am in the morning, have my cup of tea and porridge, which gives me some strength for my day ahead. Its about a 15 minute walk, the last 5 minutes being a rather steep climb!!! Then we are ... read more
I set out after breakfast to explore my surroundings. I usually walk for around for about two or three hours a day. I was in the mood for taking photos today, which I would like to share with you. After arriving back at my guesthouse, the heavens opened - I have been told that most rain occurs between October and March (so I picked a good month to arrive eh). Kuala Lumpur usually has heavy sunshine during the mornings lasting late into the afternoon, while the evenings tend to see rain and occasional thunderstorms, such as today. Kuala Lumpur is located about 350 km north of the equator belt which makes it a lovely warm maritime tropical place. The temperatures generally range between 29°C - 35°C during the day and 26°C - 29°C at night, getting ... read more
I've been here a week now, and feels about a month! After a couple of restless nights, and then one ten hour undisturbed one I now feel ready to take on the world. I spent a glorious day at the Hilton Hotel. I was kind of hoping that I wouldn't get noticed just slipping in by the pool pretending to be guest! All was cool until a waiter came over and asked what room I was in, I could have made one up I guess, but I felt embarrassed, and said I was a visitor. I had to pay 75 ringgits, which is just over ten pounds, so not bad. I decided there and then I was going to make the most of this day.......doing nothing!!! I swam, read, had a sandwich, had a few drinks, ... read more
