We were planning to stay in Senj for the night on the coast tonight, but didn't look too interesting as we drove through in the morning, so decided to head inland to Plitvice Lakes National Park instead. On the way, we stopped for lunch in Crikvenica on the coast. Fortunately, no problem getting a hotel room even though there are only two hotels in the park (the expensive one was full). We are liking Croatia so much that we will spend a little more time here than originally planned. Unfortunately today its raining... fortunately its not cold though. On our way to Croatia!! And yes, the route makes sense. We are going to work our way south through Croatia and into Montengro, then take a ferry from there to Bari Italy and head to the Amalfi Coast, then work our way back North as we may end up in Southern France and/or Spain. Checked out of the hotel to get to Venice early, and of course promptly got lost again... Italian roads/signs (or lack thereof)/directions all are TERRIBLE!!! Finally arrive at our hotel outside of Venice 2 hrs later than we wanted to, and then took the bus to Venice and got there by 2pm. We basically just walked around on this first day. It was incredibly beautiful everywhere we went. We decided to sleep in and didn't drive into Verona until noonish... the weather is fantastic, yea!! Walked all over Verona and saw: * 12th century cathedral - Chiesa di Sant Ana Stasia which was started in 1290 but not completed until the late 15th century. * Piayya dele Erbe - includes an archway with a whale bone suspended... legend says the bone will fall on the first just person to walk beneath it... it has never fallen despite many popes having paraded beneath... needless to say it still hasnt fallen even after we walked under. * Of course went to [View Full Entry]

Left Trento and on the way towards Verona stopped to go to an aeronautics museum (Dad should be proud). It had some pretty cool planes!! Easily found a hotel for tonight...phew! Had a fantastic lunch of ravioli and gnochi... I can tell Im going to love eating in Italy!! Walked around the town center a bit, went underground to the Tridentum La Citta Sotterranea where archaeological remains of the Roman city can be seen... interesting! Visited St. Trento Cathedral then decided to go for a drive and got totally lost for 2-3 hours in the hills. Driving in Italy NOT fun!! Our Innkeeper in Salzburg highly recommended Murano Italy, so we thought we would see if we wanted to stay there even though it wasn't on our initial "itinerary"... not that we really have one. But figured we were driving through Innsbruck first, so if the weather wasn't too bad would stay there as originally planned. Innsbruck was beautiful, but the weather was aweful so drove on. What can we say... we're weather wimps. It's about 50 degrees and raining here, won't be any better for a week so we're heading to Italy today where it's raining but about 15 degrees warmer.That's one of the great things about having a car this whole time, we can leave any time we want and see beautiful towns/country that we wouldn't have otherwise, it saves us time and believe it or not, money!!
