Some pictures from the road trip from Adelaide to Alice Springs via Coober Pedy, Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. We left Adelaide at 6:30am in our Groovy Grape bus. We spend the first day driving and watching the scenery change from urban sprawl as we left Adelaide behind to the bush. We stopped in Port Augusta for lunch and then it was back on the road. Our first ovenight stop was at Coober Pedy a small town where 80% of the worlds opals are mined! The temperature can get into the 40's during the summer months so most of the towns residents chose to build their homes under the ground! This is also where they filmed Pitch Black and Mad Max 3 because it looks like outer space! We spent two nights here sleeping in ... read more
I left Sydney on Saturday on board the Indian Pacific train. The Indian Pacific train travels the width of Australia from Sydney on the west coast all the way to Perth on the east coast 4352km, it takes 3 days but luckily for me I was only going as far as Adelaide which is a short 24 hour trip. I was traveling in the Red class Daynighter seats, which basically means you get a reclining seat to sit in for 24 hours. It is not actually as bad as it sounds the seats recline quite far back, there is plenty of leg room and luckily the train was not full so I got to stretch out on two seats. The best part of having two seats to myself meant I got to stare out of the ... read more
Only two more days before I leave Sydney and head off to explore the rest of Australia!!! I can't believe that I have been in Sydney for nearly four months the time has just flown by. Typically just as I am leaving it is starting to feel like home. As sad as I am to leave Sydney I am really exciting about going to the west coast and once I have completed my trip I can come back and spend summer in Sydney will my friends. My plans are to get the overnight train to Adelaide and spend a couple of days there maybe getting in a wine tasting tour to the Barossa Valley. Then I am going to head north to Alice Springs stopping at Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. I have a couple ... read more
Once again I apologise for not updating my blog more regularly. It always seems like there is something better to do especially now the weather is sunny. So this morning I made myself sit down for half an hour and write an entry updating you on how I spent my Birthday. I also want to thank you all for all the lovely Birthday cards that you sent to me. I took them to the Blue Mountains with me and it was great to have them to open on the day. As I was in denial about being 30 I decided to get out of the city for my birthday weekend and head for the hills well the mountains actually. The Blue Mountains are 200km and a 2 hour train ride west of Sydney. It felt strange ... read more
Yes in the land of sun and surf you can also go skiing. James and Tammy very kindly invited Luke, Jen and I to come down to Canberra for the weekend and to go skiing for the day at Perisher.... read more
h1Living in Sydney/h1 It only seems like I only updated the blog yesterday but when I looked I realized it was two weeks. Time seems to fly by here. I am not sure where the last two weeks have gone too. I have now moved out of the hostel in to a flat in Pyrmont which is just the other side of Darling Harbor (see map). My commute to work is now a gentle 20 minute walk across the Pyrmont bridge in to the city, picking up a coffee on the way. Pyrmont bridge is the only electric swing bridge in the world. It is pretty amazing to see it work as the middle section of the bridge swings through 90 degrees to let tall boats in and out of the harbour. On Friday I also ... read more
I am so sorry for taking so long between posts. It amazing how much you can find to fill your time in Sydney even when you don't have a job. If I have already told some of you this I apologize for that too. I guess I should update you all with what I have been up to since I arrived in Sydney. First the fun stuff, in an effort to get some exercise I have been taking rollerblading lessons!! So far I can go in a straight line and am now able to turn fairly well, which is quite handy when trying to avoid cyclists who don't like to give way. James (the rollerblading instructor) reckons I can attempt parallel turns next lesson and going backwards. I think he is being a bit optimist but ... read more
Well I have made it to Sydney. It was a bit of a shock stepping out of Sydney airport as it is wet and windy here. I never thought I would say this but I am really missing Thailand where it was 34 degrees. Oh well it is winter and although it is wet and windy it is still 16 degrees which is alot better than our winters at home, roll on September when it will start to get warmer. As I arrived at 7am I thought I would attempt to stay up all day in order to avoid suffering from jet lag. So after checking in to the hostel I set off will my list of things to do. First stop was ANZ where I opened my Aussie bank account. Second stop was the travellers ... read more
Greating from hot and humid Thailand Well I made it to Thailand without any mishaps. All my worries about Thai people being unfriendly were completely unnecessary. As you come through immigration at Bangkok airport the signs welcome you to the "land of smiles" and it is true everyone here is so happy and smiles all the time. I think us Brits need to learn a lesson from the Thais and try smiling more. The weather here couldn't be more different from what I left behind in London. It is 34 degrees with 50-70% humidity! My tour guide tells me that June is cooler than April when the temperature can reach 40 degrees, thank god I didn't come then!!! There are 10 people in our tour group all of them are Australians apart from one other British ... read more
