Taking a bus to Sibu was easier than the previous two buses but only just we knew what time the bus was departing but it was 'full' when we enquired yesterday. But when we turned up and all three of us got on the bus Chris and Charlie to Kuching and myself to Sibu just three hours away. Arriving in Sibu I found the information centre (very helpful) where I learnt that it was the end of harvest festival starting this week, a very big even in Kapit and with in the Iban community. I was given contacts that would help me organise a long boat trip hopefully over night and recommended accommodation for Kapit and told to make sure I took the 730 boat and be there an hour before. Directly opposite the information centre ... read more

Having booked a taxi to the bus station for 630 to catch a bus to Mukah, about 3hrs north of Sibu, at a time no one knew of cause, telling this the guy in the room the night before I thought nothing of it. Well at 520am he woke me up to tell me the time and asked 'if I should be up now'! Politely I told him I had an alarm set, two minutes later 'did I want a cup of tea' no I'm not getting up yet I don't need too! Two minutes later 'I think I've heard your friends up and talking'! They weren't getting up till 6 why won't you let me sleep? Gave up, got in the shower and got ready. Then Charlie and Chris got up at 610 they were ... read more

Having booked a private tour with Joanne the night before to depart about 8 we got in trouble for not been ready until 815 from her then our TAXI driver only said your late to us on the one and half trip to Niah Caves. Surprised by the taxi driver we at least later found out we had a good price. Arriving at Niah Caves we paid our entry to the park fee, collected our map and headed down the board walk for our 8.4 km return walk. Luckily the walk is mostly in the shade as the heat and humidity make it hard work but its a plesent easy walk through to the 1st cave. Putting on our head torches we quickly attracted hundreds of flies to later realise if we carried the torches the ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Miri May 23rd 2011

This morning I had to catch a bus that departed somewhere between 645 and 815 no one was really sure what time or if it had a fixed time or if you had to change buses over the border but it left on the dot 7am and took is straight through. The long distance bus station in Miri is about 4km outside the city. So after waiting for about an hour for the public bus with Charlie and Chris that should have been coming after 10mins but no one really knew we decided to take a taxi to a hostel called Highlands recommended in LP. Checked the rooms, all good, looked clean and price ok so we decided to stay. Wondering why we were the only guests we soon found out why, the hostel manager is ... read more

Asia » Brunei » Bandar Seri Begawan May 22nd 2011

Unable to organise a tour to a long house in BSB I took the 45mins boat ride to Bangar in hope of finding one there. However upon arriving I remembered it was sunday and although the tourist information centre was open until 12 according to lonely planet it was infact closed for the day. Finding the Youth Centre I discovered that a school group had fully booked it out and I was unlikely to find a long house stay so I headed back to BSB for the afternoon and decided I would go to Miri tomorrow. At least the boat trip was nice through the jungle. After checking back into the youth centre I caught the bus over to the mall although it was nothing like the ones in KL I managed to find a good ... read more

After taking the boat to Labuan and spending a couple of hours lounging around the boat terminal during a storm I then took an hour long boat ride to Muara in Brunei, lastly just a short bus trip and I arrived in Brunei's capital. Finally arriving I found the Youth Hostel, which been the cheapest hostel by far in Brunei was where I was staying. And it really was a Youth Hostel, swimming pool, badminton courts, the lot even delegate corridor's for males and females clearly marked not letting you enter the other, but it was clean and cheap so ok for a few nights. Taking a walk around the town I watched sunset over the mosque, the colours were magical both those in the sky and the lights on the mosque making sunset special, I ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu May 19th 2011

After returning to KL and enjoying a fish spa and a trip to the cinemas to watch Fast and Furious and of cause getting caught in the heavy rain when I first arrived I caught a flight over to Kota Kinabalu yesterday. First impressions of Borneo are great! Kota Kinabalu so so different to Kl. Its a very laid back city, much smaller, fantastic night market the colours and the food looked and smelt amazing, easy to get around and friendly people although not as many travellers. I headed over to Sabah museum sadly most of it was closed for renovation (must be still the low season here) but what there was to see was interesting especially about the different tribes and there costumes and wedding gifts (pottery). I've booked my trek up Mt Kinabalu! So ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cherating May 15th 2011

Cherating is a very small beach side village which was a great place to wander around and look at the great clothes shops that had the most wonderful colours and designs, I stayed at Payung chalets which was a small group of chalets only a few minutes walk from the beach. And after a walk around the shops, down the beach, lunch at Mimis it was nice to sit on the balcony and read. After relaxing for so long on the Perhentian islands I didn't need too much more relaxing time so I only spent the one night here, getting the bus to KL the next day, even had to take a taxi to the bus as the town is so small its not noticed on the bus routes! And you have to get your bus ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Terengganu » Kuala Terengganu May 14th 2011

Taking a short trip on a public bus I arrived in the states capital Terengganu, a small city that I found had lots do and see and not many tourists. After finding a clean but very basic room above a travel agents I headed off for a look around. I had my hair cut, visited the night market where I chose random foods to try even after eating them I won't sure what they all were other than deep fried, visited central market and learnt that fridays most things were closed as it is a religious day, and Terengganu has a high population of muslims. Although I did manage to walk up the biggest 'hill' that took a minute to walk up, but had been used during the war for vision on coming enemies and still ... read more

Taking a back breaking boat ride over to Coral Bay on the smaller of the two islands which honestly felt like your whole body was going to break and everytime someone got off the boat you all have to shuffle around to keep the boat balanced, was the most interesting boat ride I have ever taken to get somewhere! Reaching Coral Bay I found a lovely hotel where I managed to sweet talk the receptionist from giving me a standard room for 240 to a deluxe for 120 rm per night between Alex, Moritz and myself! The boys even shared the double letting me have the single! Bless they didn't even know about it until they arrived late afternoon, but we extended the stay to 4 nights so they obviously didn't mind that much! So after ... read more
