It was an early start to leave Kadidiri as it was Ramadam and everything changes. So as soon as the boat arriving from Gorontalo passed the beach we got up (about 5am) and headed for Wakai. After saying a tearful goodbye to Anna and Mama, Pudin, Teteng, Amal, Eli and Yasin headed for Wakai. We then spent 3hrs or so waiting around Wakai for the boat to depart, Eli was coming to Palu with Teteng, Amal and myself but changed his mind at the last minute. So after saying another tearful goodbye to Pudin at Eli's house Eli took me and Amal back to the harbour and said goodbye as we got on the ferry, Yasin came to the ferry to say goodbye aswell. Wow it was so hard to leave! Teteng, Amal and myself ... read more

Arriving back in Wakai I couldnt find Teteng who had promised she would meet us there, but getting on the boat i didnt realise there was two boats going back to Kadidiri so i met up with her there for a big hug! Tommi through sand at me his way of saying hi and mama gave me a big cuddle. Quite a few guests arrived on the same boat so Teteng said she had no rooms! But i moved back into the same room i was in before in the house, my favorite. I then spent the afternoon catching up with everyone and speaking with the guests that were already there and those that had just arrived. Much of the next three week i spent in Kadidiri was really been lazy but i met some ... read more

My stay in Gorantalo was mostly uneventful. Many hours were spent watching the guys play games on my tablet and walks into the town. On one walk into town i met a guy who followed me everywhere he was difficult to get rid of but when i got back to the hostel they said he was always around the hostel helping out too. Everyday i had to get Pudin's breakfast delivered to his room as he wasnt surposed to be eating it and i would go to the same foodstall for lunch to buy nasi ayam and juice avacado. One of the guys i met at the cafe decided he was madly in love with me and wanted to marry me! What is it with Indonesian men?! (he was in his 40's!) One evening i ... read more

My flight from Maumere to Makassar i had been told was delayed from 9am until 1pm arriving at the airport around 11:30 they assured me the flight was still departing at 1pm. In the end it eventually departed around 3pm! But i arrived in Makassar in time to catch the last flight to Gorantalo. As soon as i arrived and collected my bag i asked at the Sriwijaya office about buying a ticket and on of the staff members escorted me to the ticket office then helped me check-in although i was able to do it by myself it was nice of him to help. I eventually arrived in Gorantalo just after 7 but the airport is 32km from the city and costs 60000 per person for a taxi. As it was now Ramadam and ... read more

In Indonesia or maybe just travelling in general things never quite go a planned. I got up intending to the catch the public bus to Ende and then the boat over to Timor tomorrow and I went to bed having decided to return to the Togean Islands. Trying to get to Ende I bumped into some others that had a private car going for just 25000 each so forgetting about the public bus six of us with a driver and a local took the car to Ende about two hours away. Once there three of them were going to the airport, two to Bajava and I was spending the night. The local guy that had travelled with us helped me find out the boat information to Timor but everyone seem to be asking why are you ... read more

I got up early in time for the bus at eight to Moni three hours away (ish), after having breakfast I asked the guy at the hotel about an Ojek and he told me the guy across the road would be able to take me, he spoke with him presuming he told him where I was going and with him not asking I was surprised when I arrived at the airport. But after a bit of confusion he understood where I wanted to go and took me to where the minibuses depart for Moni. I was happily greeted by half a dozen men trying to get me to take their minibus after choosing one I sat in the bus about an hour until it had just a few more people then a few more. Than ... read more

Leaving the Togean's was the most difficult of leaving and of the places I've been in Malaysia and Indonesia by a long way. So I realised I would actually have to leave Sulawesi so couldn't just go back and stay there forever, if it was easy ish to get back I probably would just go straight back. But this meant a lot of travelling. After Puddin spent an hour trying to get me to stay the everyone waiting to see if I would be getting on the boat or not they decided to start loading the boat up Puddin hid my bag, Tommi refused to load my other bag on the boat which in the end I did then it got taken back off. But finally about an hour an half after we were supposed to ... read more

On monday there was another trip put on by the council this time to a sea gypsy village, the American bomber plane that is now a popular dive sight then back to the waterfall in Wakai again. The trip was supposed to leave at around nine, in the end Pudin had to go find the boat about ten thirty and show it the way to the hostel we eventually left around eleven. Unfortunately it was the worlds slowest boat and it took four hours to get to the gypsy village. The gypsy villages has been around for two thousand years and there were so many children there who all wanted photos! A few of the girls had yellow faces which we found out was to make there skin white. So many girls just want white skin ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sulawesi » Togean Islands July 24th 2011

Today is the start of the once a year Togean festival so I decided to stay just a few more days. But this meant too many guests arrived today, with no room for everyone. But due to it been a small group of islands they have to find somewhere for people to sleep. This meant a few went off camping and I was to move into Teteng's bed with her to free up my room for the ever increasing number of guests that arrived that day. The first thing this morning Teteng woke me up and rushed me off to Wakai, I thought when I agreed to go to Wakai in the morning with her yesterday and told her to wake me she would give me 30 mins notice but no it was 5! Breakfast ... read more

On friday i spent the morning relaxing in the hammock and snorkelling around the hostel even topping up my tan, a little bit anyway. But for the afternoon Tommi took us out to Wakai where he rounded up about a dozen scooters to take us to the waterfall. The scooters could only take us so far as there was a collapsed bridge so we had to walk around ten minutes through the coconut trees to a beautiful, large waterfall. The waterfall was large boulders and a nice area to swim in at the bottom. It was also the best shower I've had in a long time! Most of them climbed all the way to the top to swim but Teteng and myself only climbed a short way up and happily sat under the waterfall and ... read more
