For the past week, the annual Nice Jazz Festival was held. We were lucky enough to have tickets to two different events – one last Sunday night and one last night. Last Sunday night we saw Dee Dee Bridgewater (a.k.a Baldy Mc Swing Swing according to Nick) and Erykah Badu at the Scene Massena stage. It was a fun relaxed festival atmosphere and we enjoyed plenty of glasses of rose as the sun set and we waited for Ms Badu to come on.. We wriggled our way right up near the front and waited while she took her sweet time coming on stage (none less than 45 minutes late). After much anticipation, she finally came on… Only for us to realize a few moments later that she (and in fact, the whole band) we miming. Boo! ... read more

Last weekend we visited the beautiful village of Eze following a recommendation from our Auntie Sam and Uncle Howard. In fact, we went on Sammy’s birthday.. We tried to go to Le Turbie, but there is no bus going there and the cost of a taxi was more than hiring our own car for the day! Next time…. Anyway, Eze is a small village which, at the very top, is 429 metres above sea level, overlooking “one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Riviera”. Here at the top, the remains of the old castle and silhouettes of cactus rise up to the sky. The original castle was destroyed by the soldiers of Louis XIV in 1706. Today, there is an ‘Exotic Garden’ made up of several hundreds of luscious plants including aloes, spurges and cactus. ... read more

This time last week I was in London, in gym, probably doing push ups for the one millionth time that day, body aching…. It was day one of my Body Pump Instructor training. I tell you what... If Body Pump classes themselves aren’t hard enough, the Instructor training is grueling!! For those of you reading this thinking, what the hell is Body Pump, it’s a weights training (barbell training) group fitness class by Les Mills found in more than 70 countries around the world…. And it’s been my mission to become a Body Pump teacher for ages! So, there I was last weekend in London doing exactly that! But it was no easy feat. On the first day we did a Master Class, taken by the amazing Pump head trainer and two star trainers from the ... read more

“Money makes the world go around, the world go around, the world go around…” We have discovered over the course of the past two weekends that there is a lot of truth in the lyrics of this song from Cabaret!..... We have visited the Monaco and the Monte Carlo Casino! Right from the moment you step of the train at Monaco, the money and opulence are evident. The buildings are marvelous, the gardens are all perfectly manicured and the boats in the port are the biggest I’ve ever seen! As for the casino, one of the world’s first major casinos, it is famous for it’s glorious architecture and appearances in many Bond films. Sitting at the adjacent bar, we sure did see many James Bond wanna-be’s and Bond like cars do laps around the circuit! The ... read more

On Sunday 24th June I got up at 6am, which is a big sacrifice on our one sleep-in morning of the week, especially when we had been enjoying cocktails a few short hours before. However, this was for a good cause! I was off to see the Nice Ironman kick off! Strangely, Nick didn’t share my excitement and opted to stay in bed.. weird! The race began with the 3.8km swim. Watching the 2,500 athletes take off at 6:25am was a sensational experience. There was a huge crowd gathered along the beach, the sun was just rising and of course, the DJ was pumping (there is absolutely no concern for noise or disturbing neighbors here in Nice). As they swam away they began to look like little ants bobbing along in the ocean. The maximum time ... read more

Last Sunday, the 3rd of June, we did a day trip to two of the nearby beach towns with our new friend Lino. What’s great for us is that the lovely Lino has been here a little longer and had a little more time to explore, so he happily became our tour guide for the day and showed us the ropes with catching French buses (much the same as catching Aussie buses really!) Our first stop was Villefranche-Sur-Mer. It’s about 15 minutes from Nice by bus and is a gorgeous little town of about 6,500 people, settled since prehistoric times. It’s got one of the deepest natural harbours of all ports in the Mediterranean sea, reaching 95m deep (as opposed to the Port here in Nice, which is man made). We had coffee by the port ... read more

Last weekend it was time to move out of our ‘Euro apartment’ in Nice to our very own humble abode in the heart of the Old Town in Nice. Whilst I’m sure we will miss the white tiles and fluro green curtains, at the moment we are LOVING the natural hues and cracks in the walls of our historically quaint little apartment. You’d think since we’ve been travelling for so long that we wouldn’t have much to move… Well, think again! Somehow we ended up with lots of baggage, which poor Nick had to transport from the old to new apartment. Hey! It was his choice to opt out of cleaning duties and do the moving instead! Turns out I drew the short straw really.. The cleaning was a MAMMOTH task!! The previous tenants must have ... read more

I think I’m seriously behind by about two weeks in blogs, so before I tell you all about our new place in Nice and our beach visits last Sunday, I’ll back track and tell you about my Fitness Instructor course I just did in London… That’s right, I’m now officially a Level 2 Group Fitness Instructor! I’ve always wanted to teach Les Mills classes at the gym, and in order to do this you must have a fitness qualification… Enter L2 and a trip to London! We’d only just finished travelling when I enrolled so I didn’t have a lot of time to do the pre-study. They recommend 40 days to do the Anatomy and Physiology study before the face-to-face component, but I had only 14 days. Nothing like welcome back to reality hey! Then in ... read more

Currently, I am sitting on the couch writing this as Jess sit sitting “sports bra less” at the table in our apartment in London. We are in London as Jess is studying to become a Fitness Instructor. She had an Anatomy exam yesterday (Friday 25th) and has a practical exam on Monday (one I have to do as her lucky participant). She is “sports bra less” as she washed all her clothes on 100 degrees on Monday night and they would now not even fit a one week old baby. We are going to put a “Our Travel Tips” blog together soon and let you know what we will be looking out for next time we travel, hoping it could help some of you also, but I think that will be our first tip - BEWARE ... read more

Well, here we are in Nice! We have been busily setting up life for the summer on the French Riviera for the past few weeks. It was wonderful to say goodbye to our last hotel for a while and move into an apartment finally. The most exciting things were hanging our clothes (I saw the bottom of my bag for the first time in 3 months!), making a home cooked meal and not having to sit through another buffet breakfast!! We have been working our way through the list of every-day things to do and set up, like getting mobile phones, gym memberships and finding places to shop. We are living in the Old Town in Nice, where there is a fresh market right near us that's on every day which is awesome. It's also a ... read more
