A New Day Dawns We know we are headed out of the mountains today. It is sad in a way but we know our venture to a different terrain will bring a whole new outlook to our lives. The weather is still cloudy with hopes of sunshine later in the day. Sweatshirts and slacks are a requirement. We can see our breath as we head out in the morning. We had intended to get to Kelowna yesterday but there was so much to see, we start today with the intent to get there before day's end. The GPS Gypsy Guide folks are getting tired of us calling every morning to extend our use of the electronic guide. We do need to remember to tell them that the guide's twenty minute excursions are more like two hours ... read more

We are not Lost We were upducted by aliens who didn't give us time to post. Ok, that was a lie but sounded like a good excuse for not posting the last few days. Honestly, we keep trying to find time to catch up on the days we've missed but quite frankly, we are having too much fun making the memories and thus, too tired at night to post - fresh air and all you know. Alas, we decided to forego catching up and just tell you about today following a brief talk through of where we've been. After spending two days in Glacier National Park, we headed into Canada. We skipped one part of our plan and went right to Calgary for a night. Then, through Banff, Lake Louise, and the first drive of the ... read more

Leaving Jasper We take in a home-town breakfast and take some town pictures before taking off for the day. Our goal is simply to get to the down side of the Icefield Parkway again. Where that will leave us for the night is anyone's guess. We believe it will take less time because we did the drive up taking advantage of many of the viewpoints then. We do rent a GPS device that gives the history of the area and talks to specific viewpoints as we make the drive. Rita is hopeful that it is similar to the cassette tapes you could rent years ago when she was here. We see our buck elk one more time before we depart. Of course, we don't know for sure if it is "our" elk buck but we decide ... read more

Jasper, Alberta, Canada Today was a declared laundry day so we took a very leisurely morning, went for a late breakfast, and dealt with the tasks at hand. We purchased laundry supplies at the local grocery store, continuing to be surprised at the cost of things here in Canada. We met some people from Switzerland who had rented an RV. They were having a wonderful time but felt paying the price they were paying for an RV site was not fair given a train came through every half hour through the night. So, they too, felt pricing in Canada was high. We finished the laundry and repacked clean clothes. We had a couple of highlights after the laundry was done. First, we stopped at a local pub and had some very interesting conversation with the bartender ... read more

Calgary to Jasper, Alberta (Canada) Today we would travel from Calgary, through Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Columbia Icefields, Jasper National Park and stay the night in Jasper. Weather predictions were varied across the parks so we weren't quite sure what we would run into. One thing for sure, it was time to put some slacks on rather than shorts. The drive out of Calgary featured rolling, tree covered hills and then some flat areas before hitting Banff National Park. We were still getting used to meters vs. miles and kilometers vs. mph. We were glad to have a speedometer that gave both so it was just a matter of viewing the kilomers/hr rather than trying to figure out how many miles per hour we could drive. We drove past Banff, not diverting to see the ... read more

Leaving Glacier National Park Glacier National Park was very special for both of us. Yet, there were other memories to create in our ventures further north. It was a cooler, cloudy day. We decided to deviate from our original plan and skip Waterton International Peace Park in order to get further into Canada, toward Banff, Lake Louise, and the Columbia Icefields. We would stay the night in Calgary, a city Jerry wanted to see, and then move into the Canadian Rockies tomorrow. We took our time, taking full advantage of morning coffee on the balcony of our room and getting things packed up. The last two days were non-stop so a relaxing morning was wonderful. We again thanked the hotel staff and checked out. We crossed the border into Canada without issue. Guess we looked like ... read more

What a room! We awaken to find out exactly why the room we acquired last night, under our dire circumstances, cost what it did, even with the discount they gave us. As we step out on to the balcony, there is a creek running along that side of this Great Bear Lodge. We heard it through the night but seeing the clear water run over the stones and rock was a morning greeting. There are trees in full color immediately beyond the creek and then, the trees are surrounded with a full back view of Glacier mountains. We have coffee on the balcony, watching shadows dance along the mountains as the sun works its way higher in the sky. We decide the room and ambiance are well worth the rate and since we have been well ... read more

Yesterday We left everyone yesterday with just a photo journal of our travel. Just wanted to provide a few catch-up notes on that. If you ever have the chance to drive through Theordore Roosevelt National Park, by all means do so. It is a very worthwhile venture. Medora exists almost solely for tourists so expect the usual touristy things in town but the drive is beautiful and we hope you enjoyed the picture show for yesterday's post. We had intended to drive up to the North Unit but the Rangers at the South Unit told us the 14 mile ride up there was closed - we would be able to venture in only a couple of miles. It is said to be the more wild of the two units but since we wouldn't be able to ... read more

Sometimes you just have to find the fun The terrain change was obvious as we headed into North Dakota from Minnesota. We were almost overcome by the traffic as you can see by the pictures. We made up driving games, talked and laughed about the constant miles long of sunflower fields, wheat, and soybean. We must admit though, it was great to see the cattle roaming freely across miles and miles of range rather than the farms of Wisconsin. It was kind of ironic to see them all while Jerry munched on his beef jerky. There is beauty everywhere - in North Dakota, you just have to look a little further to find it.
