Day 13 - Thursday, November 20th - Albuquerque, NM to Gallup, NM We expected to catch a few things in Albuquerque before we left and then find we actually had quite a bit yet to see. Albuquerque is a great, great Route 66 show if you follow the actual Route. Central Avenue is the nation’s longest main street - 18 miles east to west. It is amazing that we missed so much of this when we were here years ago. There are hotels, café’s, old timer theater, and more. Even if you are not doing Route 66 and are just in Albuquerque to visit, do not miss Old Town Albuquerque. Old town is filled with unique shops and museums, has the quaint Plaza Don Luis, and the magnificent, historic Iglesia de San Felipe de Neri. This ... read more

Day 11 - Tuesday, November 18th - Santa Rosa, NM to Albuquerque, NM We catch a few sites additional sites of Santa Rosa as we leave town. We bypass going into the Route 66 Auto Museum so as not to get behind so early in the day. Too late we realize we probably should have wandered in given its unique offering of sixty restored classic cars and trucks on display. We head right to the expressway to begin a busy day. We’ve decided to take the Santa Fe Loop which is an earlier version of Route 66. In addition, we decide to take a side trip to Las Vegas, NM - didn’t even know there was a Las Vegas aside from Las Vegas, Nevada. From Santa Rosa, NM, we turn off I-40 after just a few ... read more

Day 9 - Sunday, November 16th - Amarillo, TX We decided to take a quiet day and enjoy the Packer game at a local sports bar - a nice Irish place called Mulligans. Every other time we've done this while traveling, we've always found a contingent of Packer fans. Well, today, there were no Packer fans and really no other fans around at all. There were only a handful of people besides us the whole time. The bartender explained they had had a huge party the night before and it was really, really crowded. That, plus the fact that Dallas was not playing until later in the day, made the place very quiet during the Packer game. It worked out great - the food was really good and it was kind of like having your own ... read more

Current State Every so often, we feel badly about how seldom we are posting for this trip. However, it only lasts a minute because we realize very, very quickly that our fun and the uniqueness of our time together takes precedence over anything. It has been extraordinary in spite of requiring a lot more daily planning than we had ever figured. We are actually finishing day 30 and on our route back home. We spent the last couple of days visiting one of Jerry's nephews and his family near Dallas, TX, stopping in for breakfast with one of Rita's cherished friends/colleague near Houston, TX, and today, visiting with Jerry's nephew and his family in Slidell, LA. We'll be off toward Memphis tomorrow. Jerry's got a bad cold but so far, he's getting through it. So, still ... read more

Current State We are actually in Alamogordo, NM tonight (day 25) where we have finally caught up with some very sunny, warm weather. We have made the turn toward home though it will take us another 8-10 days to get there. We're heading to Roswell, NM tomorrow and assuming we aren't abducted by aliens there, will continue on to stop and see family and friends along the way home. Now, here's turning the pages back to Day 7... Day 7, Friday, November 14th - Tulsa, OK to Clinton, OK What a day!! 22 towns of varying sizes, all with unique features. Some have a lot related to Route 66, others minimal. Some have a lot including pre and post 1933 or 1945 routes plus side trips that may include routes that now end in a dead ... read more

Even Further Behind Here we are, actually on day 22 and we're still trying to post for days 4-6. We're going to forego much verbiage and let the pictures give a clue of what we've done in order to try and make some progress on postings. Who knows if we'll ever succeed at catching up. Obviously, our priority is enjoying our time so guess you'll all just have to understand (or not) We'll be in Sedona, AR for Thanksgiving. Now, going back to days 4-6. Day 4 - Tuesday, November 11th - St. Louis, MO An absolute highlight day of our trip. We had lunch with Aunt Rose (Rita's dad's sister), and cousins Jan and June. It was a treat to catch up with the families. Aunt Rose and Jan had been in Milwaukee a couple ... read more

Finally - Back on the Road ...And it feels so good. We finally left Saturday, November 8th after finally receiving a part for Jerry's scooter. We were expecting it Tuesday and since we had to stay to vote anyway, thought that would work out to leave by Thursday. Oh well, we're on the road now and that's what counts. The part arrived at 1:05 and we were already on the road at 1:40pm (we were more than ready!). Even with the drizzling rain and cool weather, it felt great to be back on the road. We are armed with plenty of books and information about Route 66. Many thanks to Susan at AAA for her insights and information. Playing catch-up already We are already on Day 9 and just now starting to post. This trip is ... read more

Special Note We did not want to write our final day's travel until we had caught up on the days we missed because a few of those days were some of the most special and would contain many of our best pictures. Those who subscribed, you will have received emails for the individual days. For those that are visiting periodically, the days we added that we had previously skipped are: * Days 4, 5, 6 (9/19 - 9/21 Glacier National Park) * Days 7, 8, 9 (/22 - 9/24 Canadian Rockies) * Days 17, 18, 19 (10/2 - 4 Grand Tetons and Yellowstone) These are all posted now and thus, we give both our last day's journey and a trip summary. On our way Home With mixed feelings, we start our trek home. Slowly but surely, any hint of mountain is behind us and with each new hill, our minds wander to the things we will need to do when we arrive home. In the meantime, we revisit the cherished memories of the trip, trade off driving, and keep guessing where we will stop for the night. A sign tells us we have crossed the boundary to Central Time Zone, a clear sign we are headed home. Corn Palace We took one excursion from the expressway because of what Jerry had heard about Corn Palace and in spite of knowing it would likely be closed for the season. We turned this way and that way, following the signs to Corn Palace. Problem was, they never really said ... read more

Badlands Our revised plan gave us a relaxing early morning before heading out to the Badlands. We had a challenge to face as the ladies in North Dakota a few weeks back had said they believed the North Dakota Badlands were better than the South Dakota ones. Obviously, they were somewhat biased but still, it gave us pause to see what we'd think since we had already seen at least some of the North Dakota Badlands and thought they were excellent. The roads leveled out pretty quickly after leaving Rapid City. Did you hear the whining? Jerry was like - what exactly is supposed to be out here? Finally, in the distance, one could see something, though I have to admit it wasn't very obvious. Rita tried to explain that unlike the mountains you could see ... read more
