I don't know how I missed this blog I can't believe I missed this post Jennifer... I mustn't have logged into TB around then. I really enjoyed reading this and your photos are amazing! What a great adventure for your little ones. As Bob mentioned in his comment, there are many of us third culture kids. It's a complex situation, with everyone's experience very different; but I totally understand what you mean. Great blog :)
Those who were raised in several cultures are called... Third Culture Kids. There are numerous books on this subject (check Amazon) because sociologists are fascinated with people like us. I was born and raised in Thailand of an American father and Canadian mother. I went to elementary and middle school in Vietnam and high school in Thailand and Malaysia. I lived 18 years is Southeast Asia and 18 years in Europe. As a result I have friends all over the world. My home is my suitcase. Let me know after you have read one of the books as to whether it helped you understand yourself.
Third culture Hi Bob! I had never heard of this before, I will definitely have to read about third culture books, thanks for recommending them! I had no idea that you had grown up outside of your culture, with parents from different countries, what a rich experience that must have been. I'm betting that as a result, you now have friends all over the world, and that's something to cherish!
San Francisco vs Yosemite I agree with you completely. I visited SF last August and it was horrible. I will never visit it again. On the other hand Yosemite is a gem, especially when you can avoid the crowds. I hope you can return with your family.
:) Thanks Bob! SF was a shock to me, in all my travels I have never seen anything so terrible. I'm glad it's behind us now! On to better things when restrictions ease up and things get better.
:) Hi Dave and Merry Jo! Have you been before? It is a very beautiful and relaxing day trip. I hope you guys have been doing well and staying safe amid the pandemic. I sure can't wait for it to be safer to be out travelling more often again.
Great t o hear from you again... My sister once lived in Asheville, but we never took the opportunity to visit much to our regret. We won't miss it next time. Have you visit the Hearst Castle on the west coast?
:) Hi Bob! Nice to hear from you again! I've heard of that castle before but I've never been, I am sure I would love it. I hope you do get to visit Biltmore and the surrounding area on your next trip to Asheville, it's such a lovely place with nice people :)
Very Nice and Informative I enjoyed your writing style and accounts of your trip on Santorini. It was obvious you were having a great time, which we will in June, assuming the virus subsides.
Stay safe and have fun! I hope everything works out for you and your trip! We talk about and remember Santorini all the time, even 5 years later. Perhaps the memories will stay in your heart forever, it is our favorite place by far!
Hello! Thank you for your lovely comment Ren&Andrew! Yes it was all worth the effort to make it out in this remote part of the country, our only regret was not spending longer here!
Cape Town in September We are exciting about our upcoming trip and truly enjoyed reading your adventure. I won't be able to do that hike because of my fear of falling but loved your views. We will see the penguins, hopefully whales and taste a few wines.
Have a great time in September! Dave and Merry that sounds like a truly great way to enjoy Capetown. I wish we had had more time for the vineyards which look so dreamy! I saw a few people do a 5-10ish minute hike on Lions Head which is just right at the base of the mountain before it gets too steep or strenuous which may appeal to you, and it's free. It still gives you such pretty views and you might even get to see the whales from that point :) Looking forward to reading about your trip and I hope you get to see many amazing whales!
The sun makes all the difference! Glad the sun came out for you on the day of the hike... not sure I would have enjoyed hiking over wet rocks! But it looks like they won't be turning their taps off this month as predicted, fingers crossed they have a very wet winter. Your photos are so beautiful, it really is a gorgeous part of the world. Hope you enjoyed going bush :)
Thank you Ren & Andrew! Yes you are right, hiking over wet rocks sounds like a risk we're not willing to take! Thank goodness the sun eventually came out for a little bit during our stay. We are definitely keeping Capetown in our thoughts and prayers as they approach winter time. We wish nothing but the best for this city and it's inhabitants, even more so now that we got to experience it's beauty and genuine kind people :)
Hola! My name is Jennifer and my husband/travel-partner-in-crime is Victor. We are young professionals who love traveling on our time off of work and find it to be the most rewarding experience to share together as a couple. Unlike many of the bloggers here that take year long trips, we represent those travelers that work, save, and take 1-3 week long trips around the world. Then work, save and do it all over again!
We just added two little girls to our tribe, and are excited for this new life adventure!... full info
