July 22nd 2012

July 22 - I woke up today a bit later, around 7:30. Unfortunately, I had another bad belly this morning. Not great. But I had a nice skype call with Jeroen for two hours, got to see my cats, did some planning for the trip, and washed a couple things. It was nice to have a day to do nothing, especially after my hassles yesterday and being on the road for 11 hours in a boat, 6 buses and a taxi. I decided to go out a little before noon and look for something to eat for a change. I ended up going up to the roof area to have a look at the weather, which was the first blue skies I had seen in days. While up there I ran into the owner and he ... read more

(Spoiler alert - no pics for this one) July 21 - Well, this was a day to remember. I woke up around 5am again, when I heard someone from another room get up. I could hear rain all night – it really rained hard on the metal roof. And after the rain, it was still constantly dripping from the trees. Not bad, just there. I did some repacking, emailing, and generally getting ready. I found that instead of drying, my sarong actually got wetter from the humidity in the room. That didn't help. My plan was to skype with Jeroen around 7am and be ready to go when the Spaniards finished breakfast. I paid right after them and then realized they were leaving right then and not having breakfast. I had to end my skype call ... read more

July 20 - I woke up today at 5am, when some people in nearby rooms were getting up and packing. The walls were paper thin and it sounded like they kept moving heavy furniture and dropping bowling balls. Nina woke up and took a shower and there was no way I would sleep again. Instead I found that I had a stomach problem. Damn sketchy delicious burrito last night. I was able to Skype with Jeroen for a while and see the cats before a last mad dash to the bathroom. At 8am or so I headed to the boat dock with the Danish kids from last night since Nina was not ready to leave yet. We wanted to buy tickets for the 10am (and only) boat to Livingston but we were a little early. They ... read more

July 17 - Well, the sailing trip was somewhat different than I thought it would be. I had to bring my big backpack to the dock at 8am to be packed up on the boat, and then be back to sail at 9am. In the mean time I went back to my room and repacked my bag for the next few days and watched tv (of course). We sailed a little after 9am and got under way. It was a big group on the sailboat. Meet your Cast of characters: Anita and Paul - young Irish couple Rebecca and Shaun - honeymooning Americans Ellen and Justin – young American travel bloggers Nina – German and fellow solo traveler & teacher Dutch family of five Group of 7 Spaniards (one is actually German but lives in Spain): ... read more

July 16 - Today was a good day. I got up at 6:00am and had some cereal, and then headed to the water taxi for the 7:00am boat. At the dock in Belize City I met Major Tom and the two other people on the tour with us, Fran and Jim from Philly. We had to drive quite a way to get to the boat that would take us to Lamanai, one of the Mayan ruins in the area. Belize is full of Mayan ruins, and Lamanai is a special one, in the rainforest. Much of it is still covered with jungle. The Mayans set this site up about 1500 years ago, and it was one of the last inhabited sites. The boat ride out there wasn't ideal. It started to rain along the way, and ... read more

July 14 - Sleep was better last night, considering it was already 6am at home when I went to bed here at 10pm. I woke up around 6am and had some cereal and watched a couple episodes of My name is Earl. It is weird having a tv at all on my vacation, but even stranger that I am watching American tv shows on American tv channels in Belize. I usually just get to do this at Christmas when I'm home. It is a small pleasure. I left my room at 7am for the 7:30 ferry, but I was already there five minutes later and the 7am ferry was still loading. So I walked on a little further and then back. There were a lot of people already there for the next ferry and I realized ... read more

July 13 - Sadly, the sleep was poor and we had to get up early. We had some breakfast and then my mom and I had to say goodbye on the shuttle back to the airport. My opinion of Delta changed today. When I got in, I checked in at a kiosk, had to wait only five minutes for the woman to take my bag, and then got through security in about five minutes. Skillful. How can Atlanta be so much better than Zurich in this way? On the plane to Belize I talked a bit to the women sitting next to me, and her granddaughter. We decided to take a taxi together to the boats that go the surrounding islands. I was heading to Caye Caulker and they were off to San Pedro. It was ... read more

Atlanta stopover birthday fun I have planned my second summer vacation for Central America, and on my way there, I had an extended layover in Atlanta. I flew from Zurich to Atlanta on my birthday. It was an early flight, so I had to get up at 5am to get the bus to the tram to the train that takes me to the airport. Luckily for me (and unfortunately for the cats) Jeroen had to fly to Dresden at the same time, so we were able to go to the airport together, which was nice. We had to say good bye when we arrived though, and then I was waiting and waiting and waiting for Delta to do their job and take my bag after I checked in at the kiosk. I have never seen a ... read more

Day 8 – Rise and shine at 6:30am. Of course there was Skyr for breakfast – we had to keep it in the car to keep it cool, since there was no kitchen here. Then we packed up and packed the car and got ready for the shuttle to pick us up. We expected them between 7:20 and 7:30, but they came at 7:50. We were a little bit freaking out that they forgot us and we were going to miss the 8:00 departure. But they did come and we made it there by 8:00. When we got there, the tour bus was full. Oddly. So they had to get another bus and everyone had to transfer. Strange that they didn't realize how big the group was and plan accordingly. Anyway, we had a 30 minute ... read more

Day 7 – Today was a driving day. We were going from Akureyri to Reykjavik, which would be at least five hours of driving, without stops. We did plan a couple of stops in there, to visit a place with old farm house longhouses, a hot water spring where water is taken and used to heat homes up hundreds of kilometers away, a place where water pours out from under the lava rock, and another waterfall. It was a nice set of stops. When we got into Reykjavik, we checked into our hotel. We didn't really like it or the location too much. We were able to get a little money back on the cost, as the breakfast would be served later than stated and we would have to miss it to make our tour the ... read more
