The last day of vacation

August 12 Today is my last day of vacation. I woke up early and talked to Jeroen and the kitties on skype. Then my mom called on skype and we talked for about two minutes before we started to argue about politics. I also called my grandma and chatted with her a bit. I met Kati at 930am for our farewell breakfast down at the Irish pub. I ordered a breakfast burrito and a peach banana drink. Yu

August 5 Today started like most recent days. Awake at 730am breakfast skype with Jeroen. I had to finish packing and then I got a taxi to the bus station a direct bus to Managua and then changed over to a bus to Granada. It was one of the buses that stopped frequently to get people yet it still only took an hour or so. I sat up front next to the driver along with my things as there was

August 9 Holy crap it39s hot. I got up at 7am thinking I would leave at 8am and get an early start to Ometepe. I repacked the rest of my things and had some granola for breakfast. I talked to Gerry while I ate and discovered that he bought a dog yesterday. It was a puppy and sleeping under the table. So cute. He will send it home at night with one of the girls who works there and it will

Friday I was up by 730am this morning and watched some of the Olympics again. I had breakfast in the courtyard just outside my door. It was a great bowl of fruit with a banana and two packages of Ritz crackers. The crackers were a strange addition but it was nice. I had a chat with some Kiwi girls while I ate and then finished packing up. I took a taxi to the minibus to Leon. It took forever

Day 8 Rise and shine at 630am. Of course there was Skyr for breakfast we had to keep it in the car to keep it cool since there was no kitchen here. Then we packed up and packed the car and got ready for the shuttle to pick us up. We expected them between 720 and 730 but they came at 750. We were a little bit freaking out that they forgot us and we were going to miss the 800 departur

On the move

Day 7 Today was a driving day. We were going from Akureyri to Reykjavik which would be at least five hours of driving without stops. We did plan a couple of stops in there to visit a place with old farm house longhouses a hot water spring where water is taken and used to heat homes up hundreds of kilometers away a place where water pours out from under the lava rock and another waterfall

Rock of Ages

Day 6 Today we slept in a little bit and then chatted again with the Swiss family at breakfast. We packed up the car and headed out on our way to Akureyri the biggest town outside of Reykjavik. As we were leaving we saw another couple load their car with a bag specifically from a store near our home in Basel. Very weird. At the gas station we bought two of our favorite cookies that we had d

Lake Myvatn and Whale Watching

Day 4 Today we woke up to good weather again. Such a treat. We were told that this area has had sun for weeks and was actually too dry for the crops to grow properly. This was hard to imagine as we have had so much rain in such a little time but this part of the island has been unaffected by this weather. So our plan was to drive north around the ring road and get to Husavik in time for a wha

Icebergs and farmhouses

Day 3 We woke up early today and had some breakfast I had Skyr of course with some museli. Then we got started on our day. We were heading out to Skalanes another farmhouse in the eastern fjords. But our first stop was very cool. We headed to the place where icebergs that have broken off from the glacier head out to sea. It was very cold but not raining and it was so cool to see. We

Puffins and glaciers

Day 2 Monday started out cloudy a common phenomenon here. We drove first to a place Jeroen wanted to see with a rock arch in the ocean. That was cool to see but even better was that from there we could actually walk quite close to where puffins were nesting. I had been wanting to see these birds for a long time and it was so cool to see them so close. They are so cute and fun to watch. The

Day 1 We arrived in Reykjavik at 1145pm on Saturday night. It took a while for the luggage to come through and I got some cash at an ATM while Jeroen waited for the bags. Next stop was finding Fox Rent a Car operated by Atak car rental. Atak love it. Luckily Jeroen was looking around and saw my name on a sign. It was Omar from Atak and he drove us to their office about a minute away. We

June 30 Getting thereJeoren and I had a hectic start to the day inevitable in any trip I take. We finished packing and saying good bye to the cats wondered if they would be ok in our hot apartment and whether or not the cat sitter really had agreed to watch them for this trip.
August 2 So the sleeping thing did not really work out last night. When I tried to sleep at 930 I knew I could only get six hours of sleep at a maximum but I was still not tired enough so I just laid there for a while. Then the fan was just too loud so I had to turn it off. Earplugs were out of the question in case I slept through my 330am wake up call. Not likely but just in case. It didn

August 1 Today I slept until 730am again and had a long skype call with Jeroen after breakfast. Then I went to try to find Carlos the guy who runs the guesthouse. I think he said last night that he would take me to the bus station today. The cleaning lady called him and then he still wasn39t there so I explained again and he came. In the meantime I spent about 30 minutes talking to a

July 29 I woke up at 6am again today. There seems to be no way around it. I skyped with Jeroen and called my grandma. I repacked which didn39t take long. I really spread out more when I have a private room. I tried to get a bus to the station like yesterday but there weren39t many buses coming on a Sunday morning. So different from yesterday.
July 27 I didn39t sleep well at all last night even with earplugs. I guess it was because I knew I had to get up so early in the morning and I kept checking my watch for the time. At 4am I was up and I left just a few minutes too early. The taxi got me to the Tica Bus at 450am 10 minutes before the place opened. Luckily the cab driver sat with me for a few minutes until another girl showe

The ferry was almost in the same place as the Carnival ship yesterday there was a new ship there today. The ferry left at 7am and it was totally calm. Such a different experience that the ride over. So I started taking the meds for my stomach. Then I headed upstairs at 730 for breakfast and the woman who runs the hotel had already cooked it. Very nice. But I had a nice skype call with Jeroen for two hours got to see my cats did some planning for the trip and washed a couple things. I could hear rain all night it really rained hard on the metal roof. And after the rain it was still constantly dripping from the trees. Not bad just there. I did some repacking emailing and generally getting ready. I found that inste
