I definitly have to say, you can't be affraid to feel awkward if you study abroad. It is a constant feeling. It is hard to believe I have been here for 3 weeks already. It makes me feel like I need to step up my game with my Spanish if I plan to learn anything in the next 4 months. I have learned a lot about myself so far too. That I am my own person and can survive awkward situations and do things alone. Living with a host family also makes me analyze the family system in America compared to here and see similarities and differences. I have learned to open up my mind to different thoughts, customs, ideas, and people because just because I was raised a certain way, does not mean it was ... read more
This morning me, Ruth and Bernard (the dad) went to the ferraterria...which is like 7 streets of tables full of fruits/veggies/meats/cheeses. I love it! It is where we went the first day I was here and I got 2 cucumbers from that crazy drunk guy. He was there again and was shouting at me when I walked by again..thank God he was behind a table this time so he couldn't grab me again lol. Everything is so cheap at the feraterria. You can buy 2 pineapples for a dollar. And a watermelon for a dollar. I wish we had this in Rugby! lol...and there are so many different types of fruits and vegatables that I have never seen before I try and ask what they are but the names are so bizzare I never remember lol. ... read more
This week I have just felt exhausted...I'm seriously contemplating taking a nap immediately after writing this. I don't know if it's the sun, or the Spanish, and classes or what. The language exchange club I am in has been pretty cool so far. Amanda and I have 2 girls that are friends on Tuesdays from 12-1 but last Tuesday we hung out longer than that and then last night we went to a movie with them. We saw War Horse...it was in English with subtitles in Spanish. The one girl speaks English really well but the other speaks Spanish with us. I have been feeling frustrated with the school system/noise/and men all week lol. I walk to school, takes me from 30-40 minutes just to get to the campus (not my classes) and the entire way ... read more
Just got back yesterday from a weekend in Paradise. If anyone every gets the chance to visit Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica, JUMP ON THE OPPORTUNITY! The atmosphere is so much different than Heredia. It's a smaller town right on the beach so therefore people are so much more chill and Pura Vida. Eight of us students to the bus to Manuel Antonio Friday morning and we all stayed in a Hostel called Vista Serena in a dorm type room with some other people. The hostel was cheap. Ten bucks a night and we stayed 2 nights. There is a kitchen where you can make your own food and then they have a menu where you can order food too. There are tables and hammocks where you can hang out and eat/drink. And they have a ... read more
The university here is very spread out. Yesterday I attended the Spanish intermediate class and then right after went to the advanced class because she wanted to see how i felt in them both. The intermediate was super easy...so i am thinking I am now in the advanced from now on. After that class, I ate the lunch my host mom packed for me and then wandered around campus aimlessly. Becuase it is the first week of school, there has been a lot of live music in the open areas. That is pretty cool. The spanish class with with all americans and I have it from 10-1130 tuesdays and thursdays. Amanda and I got a smoothy and we did a lot of walking around...the wind and sun were making my eyes hurt. Me, Amanda, Callie and ... read more
My friend Callie knows some Americans living in a small town near Heredia so she invited me to come watch the superbowl at their friends' place. It took awhile for them to get here but it was nice to hang out with some Americans that have been here for 7 months and hear what they are doing. They are both teaching here for 2 years ( they are married)..and yes i am getting ideas! I asked them lots and lots of questions about what they did and how you can apply and what they thought of it...i am seriously considering something like this...it seems like it would be an amazing experience. I dont know if icould drive in other countries though! Today, we had to go to campus at 8 today to get our schedules. We ... read more
Pura Vida is most definitly a way of life here. They never worry about anything...just go with the flow. We have been told several times that our teachers probably wont come on time for class...maybe even being an HOUR late...(our classes are like 3 or more hours)...and that students come late often or do not come at all. We have also noticed several times how people don't care if we don't know what is going on. We end up waiting for our supervisors almost everytime we are doing something. I am hoping I catch on quick to this life style and mantality of life. Other differences...I have been wistled at, honked at, starred at, told "I love you", been called "honey" "baby" "guapa" "macha" and "gringa", several times. People go out of their way to say ... read more
All the students in our ISEP program took a trip to Sarapaqui with the ISEP director and our Spanish teacher. We stayed in a lodge and did some fun activities. First of all, they never tell or explain anything to us. We never know what is going on and what are doing. So we spend a lot of time making up and guessing what we are doing next lol. None of us came prepared. I ran out of underwear, and ended up washing some in the sick and hanging them out to dry on a lamp. Several people washed their shorts in the sink. And everyone wore the same thing at lease 3 different times. And the items were wore...were not clean. Sarapaqui is about 2 hours from Heredia. The school had rented a tourist van ... read more
Yesterday, we took a bus to San Jose to walk around and check out the area. Amanda and I sat on the wrong side, we were burning and experiencing heat exhaustion the entire way. It took about a half an hour I suppose. Our ISEP director and our SPanish teacher were our "guides". I have to say, I am already getting frustrated with the way they are always so unprepared seeming. THey never tell us what we are doing or where we are going, or why we are waiting around. We do sooo much waiting. If I were running it, I would get everything done in an hour. They take up 8-5 with sitting around, waiting for the next thing...which isnt even relevant really lol. We saw the Nacional Theater and 2 churches, that was cool. ... read more
I walked to school for the first time today. I was sweaty when I got there. I get a lot of stares and people talking to me. Today we had the proficiency test to see what Spanish class I will be in, got a tour of campus and the part of the city around campus, and registered for classes. I hopefully will not have classes Mondays or Fridays!!! I hope it all works out anyways! During our walk around campus/town, it was sunny but windy so it was really nice, after registering for classes for about 2 hours I looked at my chest to find that I was really burnt haha. I looked around and everybody else was too and noone had noticed yet! Tomorrow we have to walk around San Jose and I don't want ... read more
