I know its been awhile since I updated all of you! Tons has been happening and now that I am traveling about South Africa reliable internet is becoming harder and harder to come by. Twoards the end of December I made the decision that I would travel for the next three months or so rather then continue to stay in Tzaneen. Due to the Dollor to Rand ratio changing from 10 dollars to the rand to just 7 my stay at the VMF was going to cost me more then anticipated. I decided that it was in my best interest and the best interest of my trip to see the rest of South Africa while I am here. First! Happy late Christmas! Celebrating Christmas at the VMF was kind of funny. I had a blast but ... read more

It has been awhile! Africa has been keeping me busy busy busy. My trip to kruger national park was fantastic and eventful. It was about a three hour drive in the safari vehicle we took. We stopped about halfway in Hoedspruit to get food for the two braai(bbq as we would say). So I got some chicken. Excited to get some protein after being a little protein deprived. After being lucky on our first drive getting to see a hyena (spotted by me I am proud to say!). We saw all the basics the first day as well (zebra, giraffe, rhino, elephant etc) We made it to our first camp just before nightfall. After Emile (our tour guide) lit the fire it was going to be about a 40 minute wait so I decided to take ... read more

Its been awhile! My adventures in South Africa have brought a lot of challenges and enrichment to my self as a person. There have been great fantastic times and also times that I wish I was anywhere but here. Altough, as most of us know, thats the way all of life goes. I have more time to go into town. It is interesting because for a small farming town the city is very Western. There is a big mall about the size of Billings Mall or bigger. It is a beautiful town and you can sit at the country lodge drinking cocktails and feel like you are in hawaii. The vegitation and humitity feels the same as a tropical paradise. And when you are not shoveling monkey shit you can actually enjoy it. Halloween at the ... read more

My second week in Africa is amazing. Yes it is hot and yes the work is hard but it is becoming more and more rewarding the more time I spend with the monkeys. I miss my friends and family a bit but I think that it is natural. I am getting used to the creepy crawlers. At least the regular ones we see. The mangos are coming in on the trees and soon we will be able to pick and eat the mangos (along with the figs) before the monkeys grab them at least. I am really happy about all the people I get to meet. I am meeting people from all over the world. Some of the countries I can remember off the top of my head are Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, France, UK, Canada, Other ... read more

I am sitting here in the volunteer cottage ( a small building with a kitchen, running water, electricity, and of course a bar!) Trying to think about how to sum up my first week in Africa. It is amazing. I feel like the world stops here. Time does not seem to pass. It has been one of the most challenging yet most rewarding things I have ever done in my life. The trip here was over in the blink of an eye. (I think that it helped that I got to the airport early and scored and amazing bulk head seat) It is hard to grasp the concept that I am pretty much half way across the world. On my way from the airport to the backpackers lodge I kept seeing streets that reminded me of ... read more

As many of you know...or are about to know I am taking off to South Africa for 6 months as a start to my epic life of travel. After deciding I was not ready to settle into my academic life and future I have decided that I am going to take some time off from life to travel. I am going to Tzaneen, South Africa to volunteer at the Vervet Monkey Foundation starting October 5th (MY 21st birthday!!! Yeah) I cannot imagine a better way to start this portion of my life. A little about the VMF.... The Vervet Monkey Foundation was Founded in 1993 to provide protection to orphaned and injured primates, the vervet monkey. The Sanctuary operates the largest nonprofit sanctuary for monkeys in South Africa. The sanctuary receives approximately 40-60 babies and 30-60 ... read more
