As the title suggests…now for something a bit different. As we have just passed the 5,000 mile mark, I thought that I would celebrate it with a few pictures taken whilst in transit from one place to the next. You may think that this blog is a bit odd…even if you do, I am certain that you will still find that the pictures themselves hold a certain beauty. Images of such extreme emptiness have an almost mystical nature to them, or at least they do for me anyway. Those of you whom are used to the British motorway network will undoubtedly [View Full Entry]

One of the many amazing views as seen from the Architecture Cruise.
Holy Shit! Chicago rocks! However, this could end up being the longest and probably most boring epic of all time…so I will try and keep it short and sweet. Unfortunately 3 nights was nowhere near enough time to experience all this fantastic city has to offer, so a return visit is already in the pipeline! In my humble opinion, the single most impressive quality about Chicago is the architecture; it really will blow you away. The most magnificent of buildings tower over your head at every turn, the sheer scale and drama of those around the central district will simply take [View Full Entry]

Can you guess who is who?
After finally getting back into the USA, we continued our journey south to Rushsylvania, Ohio. I’m sure most of you have never heard of the small town of Rushsylvania and you may be wondering why we would make such a strange detour, it’s not exactly on the way to Chicago. This particular stop was one of the most important on our trip and was an absolute must do. The truth is that there is something pretty special in Rushsylvania, or rather someone, and that’s my great-grandmother, Mable Sloan. Mable, or Grannie Sloan as she is known by the family, has lived [View Full Entry]

Now let

After a glorious stay in Boston, our next significant destination was Niagara Falls. However, between Boston and Niagara lay nearly 600 miles, two nights of camping and, using our somewhat less direct and more scenic route, 3 states. The journey itself doesn’t warrant an entire blog, so I will just fill you in on the highlights en-route to the falls. Our first night’s stay was in Portland, Maine, home of the quite frankly delicious ‘Maine Lobster’. We decided that we could not travel through Maine without sampling at least one (each) of those rather tasty crustaceans [View Full Entry]

It was only a few hours from our campground in Cape Cod to Boston. After a lovely drive up, we took advantage of the free afternoon and got caught up with some e-mails and blog writing…and we might have laid on the bed and watched a couple movies too. The next morning was gray and rainy so we took our time getting ready. Finally the rain cleared and we got the "T" (metro) into downtown Boston. We got off at Boston Common and started the Freedom Trail from there. This is a historic walking trail that winds through Boston and takes [View Full Entry]

Firstly, just a quick note to say thanks for all the lovely comments and messages that we have received so far; we feel very loved and all warm and fuzzy inside:) We have really enjoyed reading these little ‘messages from home’ and hopefully most of you are enjoying reading our blogs. We will try to keep them coming throughout the rest of our trip so stay tuned for more! Ok, 4 nights of camping under our belt, bring on another campground! We left from Rhode Island and took the beautiful drive on to Cape Cod, a long narrow peninsula that curls [View Full Entry]

We left Philadelphia and headed north toward Rhode Island. You may think we are crazy but we decided to bypass New York City for this trip and save it for another time. Living on the East Coast will make NYC an easy long weekend trip for the future and we want to give the city the full attention that it deserves. So on we drove through southern Connecticut, where we saw a little town on the map called Mystic. I thought this sounded familiar but was not sure why. We decided to drive through and see if this might be a [View Full Entry]

The Declaration of Independence was written and signed here, yes right here in this very building.
It's Day 5 and we are now in Philadelphia for the 2nd night. After a great night out at the ballpark last night, today we took the Rough Guide's advice for Philly and decided to head straight for the Independence Hall National Park. This is an area of about 4 blocks that contains most of the city’s historical landmarks. We started with the guided tour of Independence Hall which is where the Declaration of Independence was written and signed. Next we toured Congress Hall and saw the 2 chambers where the first House of Representatives and Senate met. And of course [View Full Entry]

Afternoon Delight

Hello Sports Fans! Those of you who know me well will be aware that I have a certain fondness for Baseball, and despite having visited the USA on numerous occasions prior to my recent emigration, my good wife (who despite this mild rant, will be obeyed and respected at all times) never saw the need to take me to a live game. Suffice to say…that when we were offered tickets to go and see the local Greensboro Minor League team, the imaginatively named ‘Greensboro Grasshoppers’ (or Hoppers for short) on the evening of the 4th of J [View Full Entry]

We stopped here for breakfast on our way out of Annapolis. Fantastic 1950's style diner, which has actually been open since the 50's!
On Day 3 we drove through Georgetown, one of the surrounding DC neighborhoods, on the way to Annapolis. What a cute area! With it’s beautiful old houses and neat shops, restaurants and cafes lining the main street, this is definitely an area that we would like to come back to when we have more time. This time though it’s just a quick drive through on our way to Annapolis, the capital of Maryland. We got to our hotel by 12.30, checked in and hit the streets. The historic downtown and harbour area was easy walking distance from our hotel and we [View Full Entry]
