After observing the amazing wildlife the Kruger had to offer, I figured it'd be quite the experience to get an even closer look, so as I was planning my trip and my friend Danyan asked if I wanted to experience South African hunting, I replied with an exuberant, "yes!". After staying the night with Danyan, we woke up at a decent time and got all of our supplies sorted. When I heard the shopping list my mouth began to water, but more on that later. While shopping, Danyan could barely keep himself composed he was so excited. He explained that he usually goes hunting twice a year and it's the thing he looks forward to the most. He finds that nothing compares to heading out into the bush with friends, having the experience of the hunt, ... read more

Well, after about 30 hours of travelling, I've finally arrived. It was probably the most difficult journey that I've experienced in my travel career. A 4 hour drive to Seattle, 5 hour flight to JFK, 5 hour layover and the remaining time via South African Airways to Johannesburg. But, after only about 6 hours of sleep in 36 hours, I was met with some of the most amazing hospitality at my friend Jan's parent's house. Because it was about 9:30am when we got to the house, I was treated to coffee, "rusks" (which are like a dry fiber bar that you dip in your coffee) pamplemousse, which is like grapfruit, but bigger and sweeter, and some nice conversation with Jan's parents, sister and brother in law. After settling in, I was driven to the Apartheid Museum, ... read more

Well, it's way too late and I should be finished packing by now, but I'm not. But, I wanted to get the blog going, so hopefully I can relay some updates on my travels. I'm off to Johannesburg to meet some long lost friends, will be touring around Kruger, off to Zimbabwe for a visit to check out Victoria Falls and do some good deeds in Hwange. After that it's a bit of a mess, but I'll eventually end up in Cape Town. Here's to a 25 hour long journey ahead! Hopefully you'll hear from me!... read more

After seeing the sights, meeting some great people, and having some amazing times on the islands of the Gulf of Thailand, it was time for me to make my way to the other side to check out the wonders of the Andaman Sea. With rumors of even clearer water and more amazing beaches, I was quite excited! My first stop was the infamous Ko Phi Phi Don. However, before I could get there, I had a roundabout ferry and bustrip which would take almost the entire day. My last stop before Ko Phi Phi was a small town called Krabi. Its more of a port town with not a whole lot to see and do, but it did have a cool night food market where I was able to get some good grub for very cheap. ... read more

So, the Full Moon Party has come and gone, and I am glad to report that I am safe and sound without any injuries or ailments aside from a bit of a hangover that I experienced the following day. I wanted to write a quick entry just to share the news and to prevent you all from worrying... well mainly just you, Mom and Dad. We had a large group from Bottle Beach who we nicknamed the Bottle Beach 10, and we started out on a 1 hour drive along a bumpy road on our way to Haad Rin Beach. We would do roll calls shouting out numbers every little while to make sure we were all still in the ranks. I couldn't have shared the experience with better people. Our group included 6 English and ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Southern Thailand February 9th 2009

My eagerness for this part of my journey has most definitely been strong. So here I am, finally, on the beaches of Southern Thailand. My first stop was Ko Samui and I arrived in the open aired Gilligan's Island designed airport. I knew I wouldn't be staying too long on here, as although what may seem cheap at 25$ CAN per night, my accommodations were a bit above my price range. My bungalow on Big Buddha Beach was called Shambala. It was nice and the place was very chilled out. They had a cool bohemian vibe and would play chillout music throughout the nicely manicured beach front grounds where little chillout areas were spotted all over the place. I didn't meet many people here as it was mostly older families, but it was still cool to ... read more

What a breath of fresh air Chiang Mai has turned out to be. As soon as I stepped off the airplane, after a much easier flight (only 1.5 hrs), getting a cab and getting to my guesthouse was a lot less stressfull. As I checked in to my guesthouse who is owned by an Australian/Thai couple, I managed to bump into a dude named Michael from Germany who lives near Munich. After a little bit of conversation we realized that we shared 3 important common interests... traveling, Muay Thai boxing, and drinking beer! With that in mind we agreed to do these activities together and booked our Muay Thai Boxing lessons, our three day trek and went off to the Sunday market to browse the local goods and of course... drink some beer. The next day ... read more

So, I figure that I bit into the expensive JAL flight cost somewhat by drinking as many beers and watching as many movies as I could, but unfortunately the flight was still quite painful. I landed in Tokyo after not sleeping at all and was looking forward to see what the culture of the Narita flight terminal was all about. I managed to use some of my Japanese and was even told by a waitress in a bar that my Japanese was very good (eventhough I'm sure she was just being polite and may have had a secondary motive, hehe). Although, I'd have to say the small amount of Japan that I experienced was definitely positive and I have to go back. It felt like a video game with space age calming music over the loud ... read more

Making the last minute checks before departure! Man I hate packing... Just wanted to throw a shoutout to all of the amazing friends that organized and made it out to the Bon Voyage party on Saturday, I'm going to miss everyone, eventhough its only a month and I'm sure it will fly by like nothing. I'll be in the air as of 12 noon with my first 4 hour layover stop in Tokyo, where hopefully I'll be able to use some of my Japanese skillz. I'll try and give an update then but if not, its off to Bangkok and into the realm of lady boys... I'm scared! -J... read more
