Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich January 19th 2012

So we left NZ on the 17th Jan and were very excited for our first trip to Europe. The flight to Munich although very very long was not too bad I was suprised at how well we felt when we arrived in Munich at 5am 18th Jan. It was pitch black when we arrived and we both couldn't believe how easy it was to come through customs; no arrival card, no asking of our movements, no showing of an outbound ticket a guy just scanned and stamped our passports and we were in! We were in no hurry so we cruised and made our way outside to the train station, it was -7°C and we were both excited to be in the cold especially Jono he was stoked he could finally wear a jacket. The train ... read more

We arrived in Battambang in the evening after a 5 hour bus ride from Phnom Penh, we were the only westerner's on the bus and it was our first local bus ride. We managed to score a mean deal at the Lux Guesthoue $10 a night and the room was up to hotel standards. Battambang is Cambodia's third largest town but it is really quite small so we only planned to stay for two nights. The next morning we organised a tuk tuk for the day, we planned on visiting some hill top temples, check out the country side and ride the bamboo train. The first stop was the infamous bamboo train and we had no idea what we were in for. The "train" was epic, it is made up of two axels that look like ... read more

After an hour of bumping around in a mini van we arrived in Phnom Penh. We caught a tuk tuk with a couple from the delta tour to a more central part of the city where we managed to find an awesome guesthouse for $5 a night called the #11 happy guesthouse, the names of some of these guest houses still continues to make us chuckle. We rested for a bit, showered then went to check the city out and grab some kai. We met this awesome trio at dinner, Jack from Broome (for you kiwi's its in WA), Danika from Melbourne and Dan from England., we also managed to catch up with Cat and Jess, a couple of English girls we met in Vietnam through Cia so we had quite a group happening again which ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta » An Giang » Chau Doc February 24th 2011

After seeing all the sights in Saigon it was time to move on, we found a 3 day 2 night tour of the Mekong Delta that would finish in Phnom Penh, Cambodia so we booked it. The Mekong River is approx 4,900 km long making it the 10th longest river in the world. It begins in Tibet and travels through Burma, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam making it an important life source for the people of these countries. A river this large must have a huge catchment area, the delta's total catchment area is 39,000 square km so its absolutely massive and the amount of land covered by water depends on the season. The first day of the tour we took a bus from Saigon to a town in the delta called Ben Tre. We ... read more

After the slow couple of recovereing days and a couple of bus trips we arrived in Ho Chi Minh city or Saigon. It was exciting to be in the hustle and bustle of a large city again. Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam and 10% of the population live here, thats 8.7 million people so its by far the largerst city we have been in to date. The city is amazing and instantely we fell in love with it , there is just so much to see and do and the food here was amazing! We managed to score a awesome guesthouse down a back alley that we shared with our roomie Cia again! After settling in and grabbing a feed we had an early night to get ready for our history lesson in the ... read more

Nha Trang By the time we got off the sleeper bus in Nha Trang Jono was crook, we are not too sure what caused it as he was eating the same food as Cia and I except for one meal he ate when we stopped for a break on the sleeper bus trip! I found the sleeper bus sweet as, we had heard so many bad stories about them but apparentely we had a mint bus according to the others. We arrived at 6am and found accommodation up an alley across the road from the beach, Cia shared a room with us again (we shared in Hoi An as well). Nha Trang is well known for its beaches although I rekon there are better in NZ and Aus but for peeps who dont have that novelty ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An February 14th 2011

So by the time we left Hoa's Place we had quite a crew happening, there was Cia from Melbourne, Dan, Sally and Steve from London and in Hoi An we picked up a Mexican his name Efrain. This was to be our gang for the next few days. Hoi An like Halong Bay and My Son is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is an old port town but nowadays is famous for its 100's of tailors and cobblers. We got Jono a 3 piece suit made and me a dress, unfortunatley we forgot to take a pic of his suit before we shipped it off (Trace it should be showing up in about 3 weeks) , he rekons its the comfiest suit ever and I must admit he does look dashing in it! So after our mucking round at the airport we walked outside grabbed a taxi and headed to Hoa's place. We hadn't been able to get hold of anyone there so we were winging it. Rocked on up to this gravel street and started asking where Hoa was and if anyone new him. With some nodding of the head and repeating of the name "Hoa Hoa Hoa" and a pretty obvious pointing down the street we found a little slice of heaven. This little Vietnmese man came bounding out the door "Hello Hello im Hoa come in for a feed sit down sit down" and that was our room booked, then we rested for a while and went and inspected the beach which was 60m from our room which was costing a reasonable $7 a night. ... read more

OK so its been awhile so a bit to catch up on! So on our last day in Hanoi we went to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum where the body of Ho Chi Minh or Uncle Ho is kept. We rocked up and the line to get in was massive just hundreds and hundreds of people all coming to pay their respects to Uncle Ho. The line moved quickly much to our relief and in no time we were inside and walking around the glass sarcophagus containing his body, there are many sceptics that believe its not him and that Madamme Tussaud has the contrct but either way we could not tell , what is a man that died in 1969 meant to look like anyway??? The next day we started our 3 day tour to ... read more

So we have spent the last 2 days cruising round Hanoi in the old quarter it's been a hoot. We have had it pretty cruisy just relaxing while the city is doing the same because of the 3 days of Tet. We watched the new years fireworks display the other night which was pretty impressive apart fro the trees in the way. I have really enjoyed the slower pace of things not sure bout Zania though although she has well and truly overcome her fear of eating at street stalls. Unfortunately there is not a lot to do in the way of Museums and the like as everything is closed. So we make our own fun by watching the traffic it is quite entertaining to see what and how many people you can get on ... read more
