First things first sorry to all our avid followers who have been eagerly awaiting the next instalment of The Blog - internet is few and far between in South America and often required to satisfy our lust for Facebook stalking and loading up the next episode of Hank Moody. Matt promises to buffer out the next one in a quicker and more timely fashion than this one has been. Good. So, after sitting for six hours next to a lovely, but horribly oversized chorrita the three of us pulled into Potosi bus station. Potosi is famous for two things: firstly, it’s the highest city in the world at 4,080 metres and secondly, it was built around an infamous silver mine in which 9 million people died over the course of the 18th century. We felt that, ... read more

I arrived in Bolivia on 24th January. In the next two weeks, I cheerily surrendered all notions of personal hygiene and personal space (western nonsense) and began my new life as a roaming gringo. In an effort to catch up with Matt and Kim, whose trip began a few weeks earlier, I made sure to cram as many gap year clichés as I could into my first few days: alpaca hoodie, misty-eyed gazing at local landmarks, and – to my eternal shame – an altitude/alcohol induced chundering. When the nice girl asked who was responsible for the puddle of vomit in her backpack, I gravely named Kim as the culprit. My first few days in La Paz were a bit like Freshers’ Week. Facilitated by barrels of Bock, Bolivia’s 7% poison, ‘Australia Day’ was followed by ... read more

So in a bid to get up to speed on this blogging front, another is being churned out moments after Kim's long-awaited episode finally made it online. This one, ladies and gentlemen, will be a big un. One that, hopefully, will bring us slamming into present day La Paz where our three warrior-heroes are currently residing, spending their time eating chicken and celebrating one of the most religiously followed self-indulgent public holidays in the world - Australia day. But we'll get to that. So Kim left us on a dreary bus to Salta - having enjoyed the pleasures of whisky and food on the first bus, we were a little underwhelmed by the subsequent journey's offerings. Literally, ham and cheese sandwiches followed by (no joke) ham and cheese cake. But before long, out came the trusty ... read more

Post-BA we decided to make our way to the second biggest city in Argentina and what was apparently a student town extraordinaire – Cordoba. This meant experiencing the first of our SA bus trips – a ten hour overnight slog which had us arriving into Cordoba bus station at about 7am. It was actually really good – we opted for one class up from the basic ‘semi-cama’ which is just a seat that goes back and went for 'ejecutivo' class. I was really impressed, we got big comfy seats that went 3/4 of the way back, a hot meal (which admittedly took a while to figure out that we were supposed to eat it), and, most super-awesomely of all: a glass of whiskey (technically a paper cup but I'm not going to be a wanker about ... read more

Baring in mind this was pitched as a travellers blog, I'd say so far we're running relatively low on the travelling aspect. So I figured this next blog update can do a little more of what it's supposed to and actually explain what the shit we've been doing this side of the world. If you're lucky, and I'm not totally useless, there may even be a couple of pictures to keep you going... It's pretty tricky to work out where exactly it's worth slogging your way to in Buenos Aires. In terms of sights, you normally have to weigh up two things; the potential merit of seeing a cultural phenomenon versus the potential emasculation at the hands of a 12 year old girl holding you at knife-point to steal both your money and your pride. With ... read more

A Trip of Hurdles (Kim)

This was, as we had always expected, going to be a trip of hurdles. Also, as we might have guessed beforehand, we've fallen at every one. Hurdle 1 - Making friends: FAIL It turns out that whilst people are up for playing 'Never Have I Ever' in principle, in practice admitting to multiple acts of sexual deviancy is frowned upon. Added bonus for suggesting playing ring of fire and producing latex fetish porn cards. Hurdle 2 - Making a good impression with the locals: FAIL Beware all you can drink deals. The night we arrived (and ended up freaking out everyone else in the hostel with Matt's Prague sink story) we found out the hostel were doing a pizza and beer night for 40 pesos each (about 6 quid). Matt proceeded to get 'supz boozed' on ... read more

Just seeing how this bastard works/providing something by means of an introduction: This is Matt Orton, Kim FitzGerald and Jamie S' (changed just for you big man, apologises to any of our 4 subscribers..) travelling blog - we're going to try and take it in turns to update it, so hopefully one a week from each. Kim and I are travelling this morning, bleary eyed, to Buenos Aires. From there we're headed up to La Paz, down to the salt flats of Uyuni (spelling may, or may not, improve over the course of this blog), across to the Igazu Falls, on to Rio, up to Salvador for Carnival, and then to Spring Break in Cancun. That's the first leg. The second takes us through the well-trodden path of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, where we'll be ... read more
