...or was it all just a dream??? 24 days 7,828.2 miles $$$ - who cares?! Made it back home......at a little before 6 AM on Thursday....left Albuquerque Wednesday morning and drove 21 hours straight. Don't know why I did that....or how I did it.....it just sort of happened. I took the country highways, rather than interstates, because that just feels better to me. You go through a lot of little towns and have to slow down a lot, but it gives you a better feel for a place as opposed to flying through at break-neck speeds. My friend, Kristina, says she likes to fly (like on an airplane) when she goes places because she just wants to get where she's going. My friend, Steve, is like that, too. I just like taking my time. And I ... read more

So, I left Utah with a plan to get to Taos, NM in time to sign up for open mic night at the Taos Inn...they have it every Monday night...didn't make it...didn't roll into the area until about 10:30 PM...and not even to Taos...to Chama, about 45 minutes from Taos...There are about 3 places to stay in Chama, 2 of which had "No Vacancy" signs out...The one place I found had ONE room left...so, I took it. You may find this hard to believe...I'm finding it hard to believe myself...but...... ......the guy checking me in suggested that I just get my things and go straight to my room because a bear was on the property. What?!?!?! He told me to look out my room window once I got inside and I may see it around the ... read more

When I was on my way to Utah the other day, I met an older man at a gas station in the middle of nowhere in Arizona. He had been riding around the country on Harleys with his brother since the end of May and he was headed back home to Idaho...in fact, he said he had just been through Louisiana a few days earlier. I told him I was headed to southern Utah and he said, "It's nice but it's real spendy." Spendy? He explained that what he meant was it's real expensive. I see what he means. I think the Utah travel and tourism office must be targeting Europe...there are Europeans everywhere...and you can tell they have a little cash... So, Utah....from what I've seen of it so far I would describe it as ... read more

Been having trouble finding a good spot for internet connection...sorry so long in posting (phone has been out of touch, too)...in a nutshell, here's where we left off... Colorado Springs...Garden of the Gods...Flying W Ranch (chuckwagon dinner and cowboy music show)...had the pleasure of sitting next to one of the daughters of the guy who started the ranch 58 years ago. Cowboy music is so simple and honest...and the musicians at Flying W are fantastic. Bought a CD from them and listened to it on my way out of town...made the cattle drive from Coloroado Springs to southern Utah...was a loooooooooooong drive...toughest driving so far...listening to my cowboy music..."Cool Water", "Stampede", and some song about "Will there be sagebrush in heaven?", etc. Gotta learn a few cowboy songs... Drove through the Painted Desert...northern rim of Grand ... read more

Been busy...and I'm starting to get tired. Taking the morning to just be lazy for a few hours... Visited a friend from home who now lives near Keystone, CO...the first place I ever skiied....back around 1985. We rode the chair lift to the Summit House and had some bbq for lunch. There was a global conference for Specialized bikes at Keystone while we were there, and we got to see some mountain-biking. Later, went to the marina at Lake Dillon and watched sailboats... Drove toward the Rocky Mountain National Park and visited with my parents again...they went there from Yellowstone last week...wanted to catch them before they left for home. At breakfast, they told me about a hike and a drive that I should take....a 7-mile hike in very high altitudes...rough terrain at times.....but they assured ... read more

Free Fallin'

Been driving south for two days...free fallin'... From Pray, MT, took the north entrance down into Yellowstone, the park's original entrance ("For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People"). Took my time wandering through the park...hunting bear...never found one. Stopped at Colter Bay in the Grand Tetons, which is where I uploaded my last 2 posts. Had a general plan to stay in that area but no lodging available. The sky was hazy and the clouds were thick…photos weren't coming out right…but, believe me, it was pretty. Somewhere along the way someone told me about a campground between the Grand Teton National Park and Jackson, WY….went and reserved a tent spot. Signs posted everywhere about bears….I’ve been wanting to see a bear, but……… The site was lovely…surrounded by sage, view of the Tetons…but the bear thing ... read more

So, I left Yellowstone with a big lump in my throat…sort of knowing I wanted to see a little bit of Montana while I’m up here, but not knowing exactly where I wanted to go. When planning my trip, I found out about a place called Paradise Valley (Pray, MT), just north of Yellowstone, and thought I’d like to check it out. Before I left Momma, Daddy, Derby, and Jake, I called to see if I could get a room at a hot springs in that area…no luck…they were all booked up for the weekend…but I went anyway. Drove right up to the inn and asked for a room…there had been a cancellation and there was one small, inexpensive room available…the same thing happened for me in Cody last week… Here, I soaked in a hot ... read more

There is so much to say about Yellowstone National Park, I hardly know where to begin. Over 2 million acres…wildlife roaming free…strange-looking thermal features in the land…and lots and lots of tourists. I spent 4 days there with my parents in their RV, along with our two dachshunds… I was coming from Cody, my parents were coming from the Grand Tetons….we met up at a campground on the west side of the park. When I got there, Momma and Daddy were listening to Cajun music and getting ready to cook us a gumbo…Talk about a warm welcome! Having been on the road for 9 days, it was wonderful to find “home” out there…and in the middle of the wilderness, a long, long way from the PLACE that is my home… We spent the first day checking ... read more
