For those who have been to Japan, comparing Bangkok to Chiang Mai is like Tokyo to Kyoto. Chiang Mai may still be very busy (and smelly) in the central 'old town' within the moat, but you quickly fall in love with its surrounding beauty, its people and its culture. There's expansive markets day and night, unique shops and shopping centres and supermarkets within easy distances. Travel 20km from the old city and you could be in one of many surrounding villages featuring unique wares and markets - umbrellas, silk, wood working, orchid farms, or you can visit the elephant camps or the Doi Suthep temple on the mountain with a breathtaking view of the city on a good day, otherwise catch glimpses through the smog. We quickly learnt the essential how-tos and do-nots from our friends ... read more

Our last day in Bangkok (until we return in 2 weeks...) Went for a quick long walk to the street coffee shop, again. Taxied to the airport. Missed out on the security pat-down this time, but there's still a few flights to go. Uneventful flight with some interesting sandwiches. We picked up the rental car from Chiang Mai airport and quickly discovered the joy that is driving in Thailand with Chris' expert driving skills. Road rules here are non-existent, lane markings are for decoration only. Red lights are optional and what would stand for road rules in Australia are merely suggestions here for staying alive. Viang Bua Mansion - clean, safe and friendly. Cheap! and adequate if you enjoy sleeping on plywood covered titanium bricks covered with a sheet. We discovered the Spirit House restuarant across ... read more

Another fun day in Bangers! We found some wet markets - lots of yummy fruit and veg and beautiful orchids as well as curries, fish etc etc and ate some yummy chicken skewers...common theme?? Sat down for a beer in a pub and looked around Lumphini park but no markets or musicians out this early.... :( Sam and Chris deposited us in a tuk tuk (3 wheeled motorcycle car) for a fun and slightly scary ride back to the hotel. Went back to MBK for some shopping and lunch at the coupon food court. We had lunch for approximately $1 each - pad thai and stew beef soup. Unfortunately no beer with lunch as law states no selling of alchohol between 2-5pm. Walked along sukhumvit rd with lots of christmas lights. Left Sam and Chris in ... read more

Our first full day in Bangkok started with filling up on breakfast at our Ascott hotel (after i finally woke up after sleeping in while Sam and Chris went for a swim). Tropical fruits in syrup and yoghurt, omelette, green curry, pancakes, stir fry, juice and coffee, and noodles and soup and jelly and chocolate truffles and fruity jelly something. We walked across the sky train walkway to sukhumvit rd, and spent most of the day at the MBK and othershops. Found some impressive outdoor Christmas displays, then Sam and Chris took us to a fancy supermarket and food court. We had yummy coffee at Black Canyon where Melly had a Mexican coffee in a glass boot! Lots of market shopping for "genuine fakes!" and treated ourselves to a multi-national smorgasboard at the food loft for ... read more

We landed safely in Bangkok at 8pm local time (11pm Brisbane time). Yummy plane food and some very liberal serving of alcoholic beverages. Only about an hour in and we had glasses of wine, spirits and cognac on our trays...not leaving much room for food... Checked into a pretty amazing hotel room (suite?), went for a stroll to find some markets and food. We made it past some pushy vendors and finally found what we were looking for - mango sticky rice (sticky rice with fresh juicy slightly green mango and sweet coconut cream)..amazing!!! (sam and chris so far earning their keep as tour guides!) found a banana roti street vendor (think banana crepe with condensed milk and sugar). very satisfied, we wandered back to our hotel, finally getting to bed around 1am (4am brisbane time...eek!) ... read more

Not just another excuse for shinkansen and bento, we ventured north to Sendai and Matsushima Bay (thanks Hugh and Judy for the recommendation!!) We changed at Sendai to a local train to Hon-Shiogama station and then walked to the ferry terminal for a sightseeing cruise of Matsushima Bay. Before boarding we had a look around the local shops which included seafood stalls with oysters and scallops, crabs and huge whole fish. We got a pre-cruise drink of giant cans of mountain dew and white soda pop from the vending machines. It was hard work, but we managed to photograph most of the 260 islands that make up the bay (but Melly says there’s more like 255 rocks sticking out of the water and 5 islands). The bay is one of the 3 great sights of Japan ... read more

Started the day in the usual fashion...Andersens bakery. In our defense we try eat something different each day. Somedays we even return throughout the day for an extra experience. Let me elaborate. Danishes - not the usual hunk of dry pastry with a miniscule glob of fruit or custard. These are a perfect balance of buttery pastry goodness with just the right amount of custard to keep it balanced and just the right sweetness. A thin string of icing around the edge. Some have flaked almonds, others jam, dried cherries, apple, apricot, pear or plain custard. Sweet buns - hard to describe otherwise. Very light and very tasty. Just sweet enough and very more-ish. We think they're probably steamed and then baked so that they're quite light and almost fluffy inside with a crisp outer and ... read more

So as not to break tradition, we decided to go to Andersens for breakfast. We wandered around Tokyo station for a bit where we found a shop selling mochi creams, the most beautiful delicacy on the planet. That's what mel says anyway. Mochi cream is a soft ball of pounded sticky rice which is flavoured with an ice cream filling. They are sold frozen and are best enjoyed thawed for 30 minutes. They weren't melted, but this lets the rice layer soften, making it a chewy texture on the outside with a soft creamy centre. So good. Mel had sakura flavour (cherry blossom) and I had matcha (green tea). Our rail trip to Harajuku was conveniently 30 minutes long, so we stood outside the train station and enjoyed our mochi creams before tackling the shops. If ... read more

We really wanted to see a festival (matsuri) and finally we found one that was on during our stay. What made it even better was that it was out of Tokyo which means an opportunity for melly to get a bento!! Yay! We travelled through Kawasaki and Yokohama to Hiratsuka. Incredibly hard to find info about this place but it turned out very easy to get to. Tanabata is the Japanese Star Festival which literally means "evening of the seventh" which surrounds the 7th day of the 7th month, being July or even in August in certain areas based on the lunar month. (hmmmmm....interesting hey?) Thousands of people, hundreds of food and game stalls, and best of all colourful decorations above every street. Highlights were okonimiyaki, deep fried spicy pasta, chocolate covered bananas and 'rocking off' ... read more

Monorail!!!! Took the monorail to Odaiba, home of Muscle Park, Sega Joypolis (biggest indoor amusement park), Toyota Showroom for new vehicles and technologies, and best of all, Lego clickbrick store!!! We got off at PaletteTown and went to Maccas for breakfast, being the only thing open at 10.45am. (After getting in trouble from wifey for making us late, then discovering the place doesn't open until 11am) We had cinnamon melts and mini pancakes with apple and cream. I had a white grape juice drink. Interesting and delicious. We wandered across the bridge, past the Tokyo Teleport station and stumbled upon what appeared to be a Baskin Robbins grand opening...there were balloons, Baskin Robbins bigwigs everywhere and a general feeling of excitement. We spent up big at the shoe shop before continuing to Muscle Park. This was ... read more
