We have driven extra miles the past two days. Guess we are anxious to get to Alaska as we will arrive a day earlier than planned! Tok, Alaska here we come. The last 128 miles the road from Canada was worst than a road in a third world country. The dips and numerous potholes were unavoidable so we felt as if we were on a roller coaster. Our wildlife sightings for the day were a bald eagle and a mountain lion. We had an uneventful crossing into the United States. Leta was relieved and glad to be back in the states. We checked in at the Sourdough Campground for the next three days. Jack made chili for supper. Our second day we did laundry, worked on the RV, and did some grocery shopping. Jack and ... read more

This morning we cover about 70 miles of the same road that we traveled yesterday again passing Muncho Lake and Liard Hot Springs. As we get started we hit some road construction, and as we come to a stop we look to our right and there are some buffalo grazing along the right of way as if the construction crew had placed them there for our enjoyment. As we travel through Watson Lake toward Whitehorse the temperature begins dropping, unofficially around 43, officially pretty dadgum cool seeing as about three weeks ago we were all in 100+ degree temperatures. The weather goes from bad to worse. We now are looking at snow capped mountains, and begins a light but very cold rain. Traveling through the Southern Lakes Region of the Yukon we cross the third ... read more

This morning, after a breakfast of eggs, pancakes, and bacon we head north in our dinghy's to visit Muncho Lake, and Liard Hot Springs. We only made it a couple of miles up the road when we noticed smoke from my vehicle. Found a wide pull off, and after Shelby and I investigated found we had a transmission line that had vibrated loose. Fifteen minutes later we had the probloem repaired and were on our way again. The pictures of Muncho Lake by no means capture the full beauty of the lake. The water was the clearest most beautiful shade of green I have ever seen. Later we found out that the glaciers had ground the minerials up to a consistency of flour, and that was what caused the greenish-blue color of the lake. Liard ... read more

Heading up the road toward Lake Muncho area, and have decided to look at a campground in Toad River to stay over at a couple of days, while we visit the lake area, and Liard Springs. Turns out Toad River was an excellent choice for a stay, and we all enjoyed the campground very much. We got in some wild life viewing, had fire rings on all sites, and were surrounded by beautiful scenery. This was also the time for a hair cut, and I had my last smoke, and made a pot of Hunting Club Stew. This is an update to yesterdays blog. Barbara did an excellent job of capturing a couple of pictures of a bear, and some bison on the side of the road, particularly when you realize we were traveling somewhere ... read more

Friendly Canadian camper gave me a few glass places in Fort St. John to check about getting the cracked windshield repaired. He also told us of the Muncho Lake area that we should be sure to spend some time at, and to be sure to visit Liard Hot Springs. After several attempts by local gas attendants to direct me to the glass shops, I decided the best thing to do was borrow the yellow pages, and do my own research. I finally talked to some very friendly and helpful employees of Peace Glass in Fort St. John, and we were on our way again in about an hour after Shelby and I learned how to repair chips in windshields. I see a bear, do you see the bear, Yay, We saw our first bear, but ... read more

We were planning on traveiling to Grande Prairie, and spending the night at our next fuel stop, but after seeing the location of the fuel stop we decided to push on a few more miles. We ended up in Dawson Creek. We stopped at the visitors center to see Mile "0" of the Alaskan Highway, also known as the Alcan Hwy. Barbara and I were the unlucky ones today when we got the first rock chip in the windshield of the Rv. We had a problem finding a place to spend the night, since the people in Dawson Creek think that Rv Parks and mobile parks are the same thing. After a couple of attempts to find a place we decided to continue up the road and take a chance on finding a place pretty ... read more

Today we get a late start for the border from Great Falls, Mt. after celebrating Leta's birthday. It's about a 2 hr. drive to the Canadian border, and everything along the way looks about the same as yesterday. Both Shelby and I were packing (shotguns for wild animal protection), and the Canadian Mounted Police that was processing Leta and Shelby's paperwork decided they wanted to do an inspection of their Rv. A couple of hours later everyone had cleared customs, immigration, and weapons inspections, and we were admitted to Canada. This evening we had to look for alternative parkiing since the Flying J at Red Deer, Alberta was very small, and there was no room at the inn. So, GPS, take us to Wal-Mart, and it did. Of course you can't just park at Wal-Mart ... read more

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LETA!! At breakfast this morning Barbara and I were finally able to stop worrying about spilling the beans about Leta's birthday presents that had been packed in our Rv by her children before we left Acworth. Remember the problem with Leta and Shelby's Rv, well this morning all of those problems got resolved, and we head out for Shelby, Mt., knowing that we will probably not make it because of the late start. We get to Great Falls, Mt. for our fuel stop early in the evening, and since they had excellent Rv parking, and not to mention it was Leta's birthday, we decided we had enough for today. We also wanted to be somewhere that we could take Leta out to dinner for her birthday. She had several choices of resturants around ... read more

This morning we leave for Billings, Mt., with a stop in Gillette, Wy, for fueling. We stopped at a Flying J, and do not recomend large Rv's using this as a fuel stop. Fuel island is jammed up to the front of the store, where there is also car parking, and a back-up is required to exit the fuel in an Rv over about 30'. While at the fuel stop, Leta thought she saw steel cord showing on both of their Rv's front tires. After a period of time discussing what to do about the problem, Shelby got out and took one more look, and realized it was muddy water in the treads that appeared to be steel belt cords showing the rubber of the tires. The front tires were wearing irregularly, but it was ... read more

We have to leave Spokane Creek a day earlier than we wanted to, but they were booked for the 4th of July, and we are not planning our stops far enough advance to make reservations at any campgrounds. We wanted to stay in the area for another day to visit Deadwood, S.D., so after we finally got a cell phone signal in Rapid City we called Sturgis and found a campground that had plenty of space, and since we were Passport America members , were able to stay for half price. The name of the campground was BULLDOG CAMPGROUND, kindof fits with us being form Georgia, don't ya think. The people were very friendly and joked about the bulldog thing. ... read more
