On previous blog Day 46, I talked about our anniversary, but I forgot to say that the day of fishing in Valdez was probably the best day of my Alaska adventure. If I had to choose one place that we visited to return to it would be Valdez. Monday, we all got up early to prepare for our trip back to the lower 48. I pressure washed the front of the RV to remove some of the bugs, and we started the first leg to the Canadian border. It is only 90 miles, but took 2 hrs. due to bad roads and stops for construction. At one wait for a pilot car to lead us through I took a short nap. This time we all crossed the border without delay back into Yukon Territory. We ... read more

After another shopping spree at Wal-Mart in Wasilla, the four of us set out for Glennallen, Ak. From there we part ways for a couple of days. Leta and Shelby will continue east to Tok, and Barbara and I will turn south for Valdez, Ak. I wanted to do some salmon fishing and Shelby decided he was not that interested, plus Leta had a date with a chain-saw carver to make her a bear. Barbara and I stayed at the Bear Paw Campground directly at the mouth of the small boat harbor, and Lowes River. It was one of the nicest and most reasonably priced campgrounds in Alaska. I went to town and booked a Silver Salmon fishing for the next day. Heard they were about 12 miles out where Port of Valdez joins Prince ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Homer August 24th 2010

Shelby feeling much better, so we all decided to go to Homer for our halibut fishing trip. We traveled again along the Kenai Lake, and Kenai River . Many mountains surround Homer which is touted to be the capitol of halibut fishin. We are boondocking at Homer Spit camping area. As soon as we were set up Shelby and I started the search for the type of fishing trip we were interested in taking. About noon we headed for the docks to catch the boat for our half-day fishing trip. We both cought the 2 fish limit and ended up with about 50 lbs of halibut filets. The ladies went shopping in town and rode around sight seeing, but all agreed anything they were interested in would be a better deal at Wal-Mart. They saw ... read more

Shelby finally went to the emergency room and the doctor prescribed some antibiotics and wanted him to stay in the area for a couple of days. He and Leta wanted us to go ahead with our plans of going to Seward today, so we pulled out early for Stoney Creek RV Park just a couple of miles north of town. After getting set up we walked down to the creek, and had a couple of eagles fly around the campground. of course we left the camera in the RV. Decided to eat out tonight, and the campground suggested Thorn's Bar and Grill for the best fried halibut in the area. Turns out they were right and we all had a very nice meal. We had all the makings for smores except dry wood. It was ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Kenai August 22nd 2010

Today we head back south through Anchorage to Kenai Penisula. We had to stop off in Wasilla for our Wal -Mart fix, and to once again look for Sarah. No luck on Sarah, but we picked up the needed supplies for the next few days. We drove through some beautiful mountains along side the Kenai River, and some feeder streams. We chose the Beluga RV Park in the town of Kenai. It was very cramped parking but if it had not been cold and raining it would have been some nice scenery. It was at he end of the pinkies, a species of salmon and residents were allowed so many days of net fishing, and I have never seen so many people along the banks of a river in my entire lifetime. Faith, Barbara, Marcus ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Denali August 16th 2010

This morning we break camp at Fox Run Campground, and head north about 200 miles to Denali and the Denali National Park. We found two spaces at the Denali Rainbow Village and RV Park in downtown Denali. We were backed into the rear side of the stores that lined the main drag of Denali, and were so close together you could hear the neighbors sneeze, but it was convenient to downtown shopping. Faith and Marcus went for a walk window shopping while I cooked a supper of country fried steak, rice, gravy, and green beans. Not much to do after eating seeing as it has turned rather cool and has started a light rain. Today, Monday, Faith and Marcus drove about 15 miles into Denali National Park, which is as for as you can take ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Palmer August 14th 2010

On Wednesday it was rainy and foggy when we left Tolsona Wilderness Campground, but we did manage to get some photos of Matanuska Glacier as we traveled to Fox Run Campground in Palmer, which is near Wasilla. Fox Run will be our home base for the next few days. We had a pot of homemade soup and fried cornbread for supper tonight. We watched the DVD "We Are Marshall." Thursday we decided to visit the Musk Ox Farm where we learned of their unique role in Native Alaskan Culture. The Musk Ox, which is a prehistoric ice age survivor, has an underhair beneath their very coarse, heavy, and long outer fur covering called qiviut. This underhair, qiviut, is finer than cashmere and warmer than wool. It is also pretty expensive. Today's market value is around ... read more

We left the glacier and found our way to the Tolsona Wilderness Campground just outside Glennallen. We saw signs of moose, but that was all. We did make friends with an arctic ground squirrel, who seemed to like crackers, and saw two rabbits in the campground. We had to drive to town to get a phone signal to call Faith and get gas for the truck. We did not partake of food at the Caribou Restaurant as steak was $21 and salmon was $18. Leta made chicken, rice, and blackeyed peas. Jack baked cornbread. The next day was laundry day again. Had to work on the RV again today, then we made a fire and Jack cooked beef vegetable soup for us to have the next couple of travel days. After dinner we watched a ... read more

Today we traveled on the Richardson Highway. The motorhomes were filthy by now, and Jack and Leta could not stand it a minute longer. We had to stop for them to wash them. No telling how many quarters were fed into that machine! It probably would have been cheaper to go to a truckstop for a wash. Close to Paxson, we boondocked in a pullout, where we had a beautiful view of Gulkana Glacier right through the front windshield of the RV. We had cubed steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, and corn. We watched two DVD's that night! ... read more

On our way to North Pole, a town that celebrates Christmas all year, we stopped by the Delta Meat Sausage Plant. We ate samples of reindeer, elk, and bison. We made our purchases and moved on to the Delta Junction, where we saw the last mile marker of the Alcan Highway. We arrived at Santaland Campground, home of the World's Tallest Santa, on Thursday. The street names are named after Santa's reindeer. Candy canes, elves, and lights were everywhere. The next day we visited Santa's reindeer and his house. Santa was there and asked us about Jasper! We bought some ornaments and attended a book signing by Martha Wagner, a homesteader from the 1950's, who was also the first female mail carrier in Alaska. On Saturday we took a 12 hour journey to the Arctic ... read more
