| 7th November 2009 Auntie Lyn~ | Very Interesting!!! - From: Did I get the Swine Flu? Did I live to tell the tale?? We are it seems what we believe!!!! And aren't you the clever one not fear being ill in a place where language and customs are so very different than our own [not that we know so very much after all!] So very glad to hear you have your appetite back and that you are well enough to cook for yourself!!! Brilliant Girl!!!! There's a new man in my Life: his name is Noah --- born 11/5 to Melanie and her husband Jason. [Mel is Aliya's older sister - likely you do not remember her if you ever did get to meet her.] Yeah everybody!!!!!! Love ya girl. Auntie Lyn~ |

| 24th October 2009 Mat | Great photos - From: Yunnan Province - Incredible. Ahhh, great photos. They make me realize I miss China. What a great place Yunnan. Nice views of the lakes and the mountains. I think that area has the best food too. Do the restaurants still lay out there fresh vegetables in the fronts of the stores so you can pick which ones you want to eat? Nice pics. |

| 13th October 2009 Auntie Lyn~ | Missing Milk.... - From: Love Vietnam Joni I had NO IDEA you "liked" milk! Or that you would even drink it! It strikes me as odd and funny :) Glad you are having such a rich experience!!!! Love Auntie Lyn~ Saw your folks a couple of weekends ago, and they both look GREAT! |
| 13th October 2009 Dad (Craig) | Wow! - From: Love Vietnam Those are some incredible photos of dogs being sold as meat. How shocking. I always thought that torture caused the adrenalin to flow which toughened up the meat. Perhaps just the opposite, but how cruel to treat an animal that way. Otherwise, looks like a fun country to visit. Love you. Papa Bear |
| 13th October 2009 Sonda | Great to Hear From You Joni! - From: Love Vietnam Your travel and notes are so great. I love to see you on your journey. Wow, you are an inspiration girl. Love ya, Joni Sonda |

| 4th October 2009 Shay | Buncha what? - From: 'Nam Buncha what?? buncha quat. It's like getting a buncha squat only worse. Like, this comment I'm leaving is a buncha quat. The fact that I really really wanna taste those yummy spring rolls makes me wanna call you a buncha quat for teasing me!! you say buncha i say quat ready? buncha quat buncha quat that's all i got. a buncha quat. |
| 4th October 2009 Mat | Why do I need a title? - From: 'Nam Uhhh, isn't real bird's nest soup super duper expensive? I thought it was an extreme delicacy? Goat is good, it just has to be cooked right. It cain't be no aluminum (or is it aluminium now that you're hanging out with Europeans) eating, trash heap consuming, city dwelling goat. As for those kinds...you only take their milk. As to your particular tastes--bird's nest soup but no silk worms? Where is this line being drawn? Also, can you define some of your activities? i.e. does deep water soloing always involve deep gashes to the palms of one's hands, or might this activity be accomplished without pain? |

| 3rd October 2009 Shay | I see... - From: Like My Brother Said your midriff!!! ooooh!!!! You're lucky the Chinese government didn't deport your fine ass into a sex-slave group! Clearly you are too ninja for them!! Good work agent. |
| 3rd October 2009 Mat | Mean Comments - From: Like My Brother Said That photo titled "did he leave his truck at home" is wrong on many levels...and very funny. The quality of the air is so bad, even in the rural areas, as is visible from your photos. It looks like so much fun, though, all of those chickens and cows. Great stuff over there in China. By the way, when you say "notta" in English, it's really referring to our second most populous American language--Spanish, and the word is theirs. You ought to pay tribute by spelling it correctly: nada. It also means he swims, in case you want to refer to those Chinese men bathing in the river. |
| 23rd September 2009 André Grüter | Cool - From: Taking Taiwan Looks like Joni is conquer asia :-) |

| 14th September 2009 Craig Zalk | One last place for Superman to change. - From: Ch-Ch-Ch Chewing through Chiang Mai Hi Joni! That is a very funny comment about the phone booth & Superman, especially from someone so young. You had me laughing. You will have to educate me on the subject of rice. I thought there was just brown and white rice. Apparently I need educating. Hope you continue to enjoy China. Love you lots. Papa Bear. |
| 13th September 2009 Shay | Bug lady - From: Ch-Ch-Ch Chewing through Chiang Mai Dude. I know how long you've been craving those grasshoppers. It's like, the whole time you lived in Boulder you couldn't shut up about how good they tasted and how much you wanted one with a little lime, a dash of salt, and some fresh cilantro. Then you forced me into the field in the backyard of your apartment and made us hunt for them. You started screaming at me that you wanted them fresh and taught me how to capture them alive. I still have nightmares about that crazy night --you out in the field with a net, sneakers, in a nightgown with your hair in curlers laughing in the full moon. *shivers* |
| 13th September 2009 Shay | rafting! - From: Hanging out in China Those pics are awesome! |
| 12th September 2009 Richard Z | Envious! - From: Hanging out in China Hi, cuz, I can always count on feeling envious every time I read another entry. All I can say is, Wow, and Good For You!! Can't wait until you pass this way again, whenever that might be, and get filled in in person. Saw your grandfather last week and spoke with Estelle yesterday and today. He seems to be doing somewhat better, his eye surgery yesterday made his doctor very happy, and a happy doctor is always nice to have. Keep it up and let the rest of us live vicariously through you. Richard |
| 11th September 2009 Charley Cropley | Tooo Cute - From: Ch-Ch-Ch Chewing through Chiang Mai You, Joni Zalk are altogether too cute in that video from Thailand. It pleases me to see that some people's of the world have not lost their taste and appreciation for eating insects. I would try them all if I were there. Live outrageously, sister. Charley |

| 20th July 2009 Joyce | Days of Future Past - From: Summer in Boulder '09 Joni What fun - Gosh this Bouldering in Bolder certainly reminds me of the '60's. The water/rope jumping reminds me of when I traveled to Boulder with my ex and we camped all the way, especially up in the mountains at Lake Elaine. Cold waters ..................... But truly beautiful. I'm glad to see you have friends that are sharing your life and you are enjoying yourself. Be careful out there :) Thank you deeply for your lovely note about Kai - it's so sad. Love Semi Aunt Joyce |

| 17th September 2007 michael | geneva sucks - From: Welcome to Switzerland; please open your wallet. I was warned before I came here that they can be rude to Americans. I was just refused lunch at a small cafe by the owner. I know it was because I was American. The minute I open my mouth here people either become uncomfortable or rude. Hell, I don't hold it against them that they stole the Jews money during the holocaust, knowing they were being sent to the gas chambers so why do they have to hold G.W.'Bush's crap against me? Should if stayed in Amsterdam, the people are much more laid back. |
| 12th September 2007 JRenee | Hi Jennifer! - From: You go with what you have What thing in England? Ohhh... that thing. I tried to tell the lottery board that I was there to pick up my money, but they just called security. Bastards. |

| 10th September 2007 Michael Sperber | A suggestion - From: You go with what you have Perhaps while you are there, you can travel to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lybia, etc.... take a look at the abject poverty and utter ignorance and lack of education that is the experience of most of the populations there.... Then think about the fact that oil has made those countries 10s of times more wealthy than Israel... Why aren't you critical of the fact that, in Saudi Arabia for example, only 5000 people control all the wealth in the country and do nothing to create an infrastructure, and an education system for the people there. THEY can afford it far more than Israel or even the EU and the US for that matter! |
| 10th September 2007 Michael Sperber | About some of your commments.... - From: You go with what you have Hi Sweetie, sounds like you're having fun! Just to address a couple of things that you wrote. The reason why the governments have the money for education in the EU is because taxes are insanely high. In most countries income taxes go over 70%+!!! This has lead to a lot of problems, one of the biggest being that their unemployment rate, especially among people under thirty, is 4 to 5 times what it is in the US. So all that education doesn't really help them getting a job! As for Israel's spending on it's Military, I wonder if you realize that Israel is a TINY country surrounded and outnumbered, by thousands to one, with people that are sworn to destroy the country and kill every Jew. Once you spend some time there you may figure out why they need to spend so much on their military, and that without that spending, and America's help, they would cease to exist very very quickly. On both of these subjects I could go on and on and on, but this blog is about you and your experiences, not a political debating board. I love you sweetheart, but sometimes your views are VERY simplistic, and your perspectives and reasoning ignore tons of relevant factors in favor of a rather naive world view. Big Kisses! Michael |

| 27th June 2007 SheffieldPete | Its raining again - From: I have a confession to make... Hey Joni. More dodgy weather on the way this weekend and my trousers (pants) are only just dried out. Happy travels. Pete. PS Slovenia |
| 26th June 2007 Mat | I agree with Kendra - From: I have a confession to make... He really is just gorgeous. (no homo). That's what my kids say before they do or say something that could be misconstrued as iffy. I laugh every time one of them says that, and let them know that not every act can be negated just because they say that. So funny. Anyhow, did you write that part at the end? because it's got some serious depth to it; lot of imagery and literary gold. Finally, you girls are so corny with all those lovey dovey things you say. I can recognize the value of positive comments, saying nice things, etc, but sometimes I'm thankful to be a man. Haha! Love you. |
| 26th June 2007 Mat | G'day from Oz - From: Italy Funny you mention the green bags for groceries. It's true, and I've been noticing it lately. Why can't we do these things in the States? It seems intuitive, no? Anyhow, glad to see that you've taken a liking to Italy, and that the climbing is awesome. One of the kids from my group in Oz quoted this line from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and it seems applicable to both of our trips: "If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it. Want to change the world, there's nothing to it." What do you think? |
| 22nd June 2007 JRenee | Hi Kendra! - From: I have a confession to make... Hi Kendra! I am so happy to have you in my life. You totally captured my feelings completely about Giordano. That was brilliant. well done. Bravo! Yes, thank you for correcting me about the non-ice cream Gelato. Gelato is waaaay better than ice cream! |
| 22nd June 2007 kendra | i don't even know where to begin.. - From: I have a confession to make... ok actually lets start with Giordano, GORGEOUS! moment of silence please. moving on, sorry to burst your bubble but it's gelato, not ice cream. gelato is something completely different and unique compared to ice cream, no? you are a climbing stud! (but we already knew that) I LOVED LOVED LOVED the life's lessons part. Basically, what it all comes down to is you have such great insights to share with the world and I love being able to be a part of the circle and learn from you. Thanks Joni. you are truly living the experience of being alive. |
