June 9, 2010: We have thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the western United States. Seeing all that we have has been a blessing to us as a family. We have been reminded once again of how lucky we are to live in this great and beautiful country! Spending this time together has created so many great memories; we hope that Isaac and Grace will remember parts of this trip for a lifetime. Now it's time for us to make our way home. We're grateful for safe travels and for friends and family to return home to at the end of this road trip. Though we'd love to hit the lottery or to be independently wealthy so we could just keep going, we're grateful to have jobs to return to so we can set sail again to ... read more

Tuesday, June 8, 2010: Today we headed to Idaho Springs near Black Hawk/Center City, CO to ride the rapids. This was the first white-water rafting experience for all four of us and apparently we picked a really fun day to be on the water. All the guides and the owners of AVA (Arkansas Valley Adventures) said the waters were so high that it was going to be a thrilling day to be on Clear Creek. They were so right! We opted for the beginner's "float", but the waters gave us a really good ride with class 2 and 3 rapids throughout the 6-7 mile, 2.5 hour journey. There were several bridges along the route and we literally had to get down in the boat squashed together to avoid hitting our heads on them. We were all ... read more

Monday, June 7, 2010: We slept in this morning which made it feel like vacation had truly begun. It is just SO QUIET on this mountaintop! I have to say that I think we're closer to the airplanes than we are to any cars, except of course the few belonging to other campers staying in the campground right now. Today we hiked the Raccoon trail located within Golden Gate Canyon State Park. This trail was only about 2.5 miles long, but it kicked our butts with the change in altitude that we have experienced. We did it, but we were slow! The trail itself was rocky and very dry so we were stepping carefully the whole way. Winter has just let up here so there isn't much in the way of wildflowers yet. Still, the aspen ... read more

June 6, 2010: Today was a travel day. We had to down the camper in pouring rain so that was a rough way to get going this morning. We took consolation in hot chocolate and coffee on the way out of the park. We left behind temps in the low 40's and arrived in Golden, CO to 97 degrees and bright sunshine. Part of the drive leaving the Tetons took us through high mountain peaks full of snow. The rain continued most of the way making a last look at the Teton Mountain Range impossible. The farther away we got from the Tetons, the clearer the weather got. Most of the remainder of the drive through Wyoming was scenic. You can still drive for very, very long distances without seeing a town, intersection and sometimes another ... read more

Saturday, June 5, 2010 Happy birthday Mom! We had hoped to call you to sing, but we have no cell reception so hopefully this blog will go out in a timely manner. I hope you got to celebrate in some fun way today. It’s hard to believe that this is our last day in the Grand Teton/Yellowstone area of the country. We decided to drive to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in hopes of seeing the lower falls and hiking the Red Rock trail down into the canyon. Unfortunately, the trail was closed; a ranger said that there was still too much snow and ice in the shady spots since winter just ended three days ago. We stopped in several places along the canyon to take in the views then headed towards camp. It was ... read more

Friday, June 4, 2010 It rained all night long and we expect nothing but rain again today. Because of this, we decided to take it slow this morning. Hiking was not going to be a good option for the day so we decided to head into the town of Jackson. The downtown district is Wyoming’s version of Brown County so for those who like to shop in a quaint little district, this was a goldmine. For us, we enjoyed the Mountain High Pizza Pie and snapped a few photos at the antler arch and decided to hit the road. We headed to Granite Hot Springs thinking this would be an easy-to-find sight. Ha! You know it’s out in the middle of God’s country when Garmin says things like “follow unmarked road” and then loses direction all ... read more

June 3rd 2010

Hello all we are having an excellent time. I can’t believe it’s the 7th day in vacation! We have not seen a bear. We have seen an elk, pronghorn deer, bison, baby bison, marmot, and many more. We have pictures and videos to show when we get back. Love to all, Grace June 3, 2010 - It costs a family of four more to take a shower at our campground resort than our monthly water bill at home. But, then again…it sure did feel good to get clean and we’ll do it again. That’s how we started our day because today was Yellowstone. Yellowstone is about an hour and half away from our campground. The drive was spectacular and once in the park the views got even better. Of course, we stopped at the “Entering Yellowstone ... read more

June 2, 2010 - First things first: HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY, JIM!! Since I’m blogging this after the fact, I know that your birthday wish to arise next to majestic mountains and a pretty lake will come true today. In fact, God will put a rainbow in the sky for you first thing this morning! It was wonderful to spend the day hiking with you and you just can’t beat Reese’s birthday cake at the campsite. I’ll let you tell the rest of the story… What a way to spend your 40th birthday. Our morning started out with a nice ride through the country side. With the rain and all, we decided we might just take the scenic drive to see how the day would shape up. A Wyominger once told me that, “In Wyoming, if you ... read more

June 1st 2010

June 1, 2010 - God is good...all the time. All the time...God is good! The photos below will tell the story better than I can. (note: we only have one bar and the photos won't load so we'll attach them later when we have a stronger signal) A spring that attaches to the axle of the camper tire broke into two pieces as we were moving down the highway "in the middle of nowhere" otherwise affectionately known as Orin Junction, Wyoming. It felt like a tire had blown out. Obviously we were a little anxious about what this would do to our vacation. At the same time, we were thankful that we weren't hurt and hopeful that we'd find the help we needed at that moment. There's no doubt we were blessed in many ways through ... read more

May 31, 2010 - "Fire in the hole!"...and no...I don't mean that kind! Sickos! Happy Memorial Day to all from South Dakota. We slept in a bit this morning and still found time to pack a lot in. We're so used to having to move our clocks ahead an hour, it's been kind of weird setting them back. The temperatures were chilly last night, but not too bad. The extra blankets we packed helped. We began our day with a return trip to Crazy Horse. They had a blast scheduled and we didn't want to miss that. We arrived with time to tailgate out the back of the truck. We're getting good at throwing together some simple sandwiches. Karen even invented a new sandwich yesterday...Peanut Butter and Lettuce? Yes, lettuce. You know...it wasn't that bad. It's ... read more
