An Eventful Weekend!

Obviously it requires a day off!... Thursday was the School swimming gala ...and obviously this requires the day off the next day?! I like the system here...any kind of school event results in a day off! Brill. So the swimming gala involved me getting an extra early bus...something I was willing to do for a day off! I wore my new school t-shirt - supporting the red team. I sat with the red 'cheering team' in the stands. In typical Hong Kong style, it was very well organised....The opening ceremony saw the flag ambassadors marching (in the blue shoe covers you wear at swimming pools!) and raising the flag...then we all stood for the national anthem...then the school song, and then the opening prayer....Then the races could begin! A lot of the time I was clapping ... read more

So another week at school has gone by, it is going so fast already! I have had a Putonghua (politically correct term for Manadarin) lesson, which was really good. Supposedly the new 'language of the world'. If you can speak English and Putonghua, you're onto a winner apparently? I'm doing a 4 week course in Putonghua, which should help when I head to the mainland, where English is less widely spoken. It always amazes me - the kids at school speak Cantonese, English, and Putonghua from at least age 5! I started German at age 11! I had a great weekend, it was lovely and sunny, so after getting my official HK ID card (I'm an official resident now!) I went to TST (Tsim Sha Tsui) to the Doulos boat. It is the world's oldest ocean ... read more

Festivities

Time for another update of life in HK… Quite a lot has been going on in the last week actually. I had my first Chinese festival - the mid-autumn festival, on Tuesday, which is a nice festival - celebrating the moon basically! There is an ancient Chinese tale about the festival, and it is celebrated in October, when there is a full moon. We went to Victoria Park on HK Island to see all the festivities and there were loads of lanterns around, and lots of families and children with lanterns. There were some stages set up in the park with Chinese shows on as well. In the grounds of the park, hundreds of families were sat round with candles, having dinner - it was really nice to see, and the moon was really bright. In ... read more

A whole lot of Buddhas!

Well...seen as the typhoon warning called off our junk boat trip yesterday, I ventured elsewhere! I went to the 10,000 Buddha monastery in Sha Tin. Actually I have read that there are more like 12,800 Buddhas there, but I guess the 10,000 Buddha monastery has more of a ring to it! At first we went up the wrong part of the hill to a memorial area where there were lots of memorial halls facing out into the hills, and people place food in there, so their loved ones are sustained. It's a nice idea...even cans of coke were there. Once we were back on the right path, we had to climb a lot of steps up the temple, and the whole way up there were lots of gold statues which were cool, and some of them ... read more

Ley Ho!

Ley Ho! After dancing into the early hours in Lan Kwai Fong on Friday night, I made it to a Chinese Culture day at the Poly University in Hung Hom. It was an excellent day which began with a Cantonese lesson. It’s a really hard language to learn because there is no way of just ‘picking it up’ I can’t read the symbols, and even if I could I wouldn’t know how to pronounce them! The only way to learn is to have someone say the word, and memorise how it is pronounced. I have to write down a random combination of letters that represents how it sounds to me! Ley Ho is ‘hello’ but it is never written like that obviously! So…. “orn giu Jennifer, orn gum nin yee sup yat sou, orn lei tsi ... read more

Yesterday I went to the Special Administrative Region of China called Macau. Just an hour ferry ride from HK, and it meant I got another passport stamp! It was an interesting place..... They say it is a taste of Europe in Asia, but I failed to find that really, felt more Chinese. After a long queue at customs, we saw the main sights such as the ruins of St.Pauls and the main square. We went to the A-Ma temple, which is a pretty little place amongst some rocks, like an open air temple you climb up through. We tried the 'egg custard tart' that the region is apparently famous for, but that may just be a tourist trap! It was tasty though! In the evenings Macau lights up....Many many Chinese people go to Macau....to gamble! There ... read more

Been Busy!

I thought it had been a while since my last entry, and glancing back at my diary…I’ve been quite busy! Things just haven’t stopped here! So here’s a rundown on the events of the last ten days or so! I have been to a Korean BBQ with two friends from uni and another girl. This was pretty cool, where you sit round a table with a flame/grill in the middle, and you collect raw meats/fish/vegetables, and rice/soup, and you chat away whilst you cook whatever you fancy eating next, and it is a set price for 2hours, a good deal I thought, and it was fun. I have found a good swimming pool in Kowloon park, which is a lovely place, and there is an outdoor pool for sunny days. We had a girly night at ... read more

First day at school…

For the first time in four years, I went to school today! Lots of hello’s and smiles to all the children which was nice. They were all on their way to the opening ceremony in the school hall, one for the lower years and one for the upper years. All the teachers sat on the stage, and the principal Linly gave a speech, and then the “flag ambassadors” marched in and the wind machine was started to blow the flag out, and everybody sung the national anthem!! Then all the teachers were applauded one by one as they were introduced. There are about 900 students in the school, and it is quite a religious school. Schooling here seems a lot stricter than at home. There seems to be more pressure on the children, with lots of ... read more

All kinds of good stuff

Hi all - time for another update from life in HK…. Since I last wrote, I have finished training. I was teaching P5 and P6 in the last few days. No more noteworthy random English names, but they were nice kids, and I was impressed by their English. We also had a P1 English funfair, with games for them to play in English, and they were great fun. At the end of training, I now know lots of very random songs with actions, and warm up games which I’m sure will come in handy at recess! And we all actually quite like being silly with them anyway….some have already been sung/shouted in bars! We finished training on Wednesday, so we all went out in Wan Chai, and then in Central to celebrate! On Friday (31/8) I ... read more

Things move fast here!

August 23rd 2007

So...I have only been here for about ten days, and yet a lot seems to have happened! I am nearing the end of a weeks orientation for primary school children, which has involved many silly games, and acting out stories! Each day we have been playing with the children in recess, and then teaching a 45 minute lesson in groups, getting them to speak as much English as possible. It can be quite challenging when Brian at the back just wants to go home and play computer games, and Richard seems to spend the 45 minutes making strange noises and the odd cantonese remark! The kids here often choose their own 'english name' so some are quite unique, such as Kinki, Queenie, and bobo?! Today I was helping teach a P1 class (4-5yrs), who are just ... read more
