Peru South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island
We went on a boat tour on Lake Titikaka which, upside down is shaped like a puma hunting a rabbit. It is a huge lake at 3800m above sea level so one of the highest navigable lakes in the world. The guide we had was great he was telling us all about the Aiamara and Quechua tribes that used to live around the lake who have their own languages and traditions. We visited Uros a group of floating islands where they speak Quechua andhave houses, kitchens, lookout points, primary schools and a basic medical centre all built from reeds. The islands [View Full Entry]

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail
Day 1 - up at 4am and then bus to a town called Ollantaytambo for breakfast. Back on the bus to KM82 (2750m) - the famous starting point of the classic Inca trail. Then you walk along the river for a bit before you start to climb gently up and down rolling hills...the Peruvian flat. At one point we stopped and saw some ruins from a distance called Llactapata which were pretty big. This site was a storage place as it is in between two valleys which makes it windy. This means that the Incas actually called the Andeanor Quechua people [View Full Entry]

Bolivia South America
Potosi is the highest city in the world at an altitude of 4020m above sea level. It also has a working silver mine in the mountain of Cerra Rica (rich mountain).but we decided not to go down the mines where we could potentially get asbestosis or inhale any number of other poisons. Instead we went to watcha film called The Devil´s Miner in Sucre. It is a documentary about a 14 year old boy who works down the mines to suppport his family as he has no father, his ambition is to get out of the mines and get an education. [View Full Entry]

This 4 day tour was a real experience. Far more driving around in a jeep than any of us expected, but it got nice and cosy in there with Huan Carlos our driver and guide and Mama our cook, the three of us and Mike and Jared, who we met in Salta and were also in our jeep. The major themes of the tour, mountains, llamas, lagoons and flamingos, being at high altitude as well as sitting in a jeep, trying to sleep, the cold outside, the heat in the jeep and the driver only ever addressing the girls: "hola chicas!" Argentina - take one South America
In Paraty, we also went on a, ahem, half hour bike ride, which again turned into an unexpected strenuous activity. I seem to have found myself on an adventure holiday all of a sudden where ´half hour bike ride´actually means an hour and a half uphill struggle where if you stopped for a break you got chased by (potentially rabid) dogs! Still, I survived to tell the tale so no harm done. And anyway it wasn´t about the bike ride it was about the waterfall which people surf down. It was so dangerous, even to slide down, as at the bottom [View Full Entry]

Hello!! So we´ve been in Rio for a while and I love it! Here´s just some of what we´ve been up to.... Sunbathing on Copacabana and Ipanema beach has been our main activity when the weather is good. Both beaches are gorgeous. On our second day we met up with Andy, Katie and Georgia (who are also going to Linklaters with Tracey and Franki) and went out to an indie night with them. We went to see a local derby football match a week ago. The stadium was amazing and the fans were so involved, waving giant flags and setting off [View Full Entry]
