My name is Jonathan Thiel and I am a student at the University of Georgia. I am spending three months in Verona Italy on a study abroad program to complete my last semester of college. Here are some recorded thoughts and experiences from that time!

Well, its been a week since my Amsterdam trip, I just got back from Prague which so far is my favorite place I have been, but I am going to have to give Amsterdam a close second. I really did not know what to expect in Amsterdam, besides a liberal and tolerant town. However, trusted sources told me not to miss this place if you get a chance so I went in pretty excited, ready to make the most of my time. I got about two hours of sleep the night before we had to leave. It was the day after St. Patricks day so we all had a fun night out in downtown Verona. I got back at around two and we had to meet in the lobby of our residence at 5:50 because our ... read more

Ah… Salzburg. The birthplace of Mozart and the setting of the wonderful musical “The Sound of Music.” That’s mainly what this town is known for, but it is beautiful nonetheless. Not even the dismal weather could detract from that fact. We arrive at around 11 and immediately head to the salt mines. This was so cool. We got to slide down these big slides and see how the salt is made and distributed. Several big rock like structures are illuminated showing the translucense of the salt rocks. We even got to see a trippy light show and ride a boat on an underground lagoon. It was a pretty cool experience. Afterwards, we check into our hotel which is much nicer than the one in Munich. We get to walk around town for a bit and find ... read more

So its been about a week since Munich and Salzburg, so my thoughts are not as fresh in my mind as they could be but here is my best attempt to recollect that wonderful week. So Friday morning we all head to the charter bus that we will be taking there. We are all pretty beat from spending a late night out in Verona the night before so sleep on the bus is looking like great option… however, we happen to be driving through the Alps. And I can’t close my eyes with that view. See the pictures to the side and you will get a glimpse of what I am talking about. The drive to Munich is about 6 hours, so we leave at nine and get there at about 4. When we arrive, we ... read more

Europe March 7th 2010

Well today's entry won't be so detailed but Ben and I met Marco, the guy that works at our residence, at about 1:45 in the street. We walk to the match because the stadium is about 15 minutes away. As we walk there we talk a bit about soccer in Europe and how big a deal it is. The match we are about to see would be the equivalent of watching a Georgia Southern Football game or a gladiators arena football game in terms of the skill level relevant to A league level teams in Europe. But the way the fans show up for the games and the big deal they make about Hellas Verona shows the true meaning that soccer really has over here... its like a religion. Marco has different seats than Ben and ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto March 6th 2010

So its been three days since we toured Venice. Unfortunately things aren’t as fresh in my memory as previous posts so the details may not quite be there. However, I did have my pen and notepad, and yes I did take some notes when I could so here goes my best recollection of the day. We met right outside the residence and headed into the same bus that we rode in when we toured the Soave winery. Its about an hour and a half ride to Venice by bus and the cheap train will take us back and last about 2 hours. As we near the city and cross over on the road, Martin begins the history lessons, and of course I’m jotting things down. The road that approaches Venice was built about a hundred years ... read more

It is Thursday here in Verona. It is cloudy outside and just about everyone has left for the Milan airport to head to Paris. About 6 other students are headed to Belgium (brrrrr!) and 1 is actually going to London. Ben and I decided to stay back in Verona to take it easy this weekend and make sure our Euro’s don’t grow feet and walk away from us. Students that are around me are probably sick of me ranting about this but last week I got on excel and made a budget spreadsheet to get an idea of how much I will spend and its looking like I’m going to be just fine in terms of money. Much thanks again to you who helped make this trip possible and certainly less stressful (you know who you ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Siena March 2nd 2010

2/25-2/27 A Weekend in Tuscany: Siena, Cortona, Pisa Well… here it is, the recollection of the first weekend off we as a group have. And I will preface this long entry with the statement that it did not dissapoint. I had heard stories and had been told by many that Tuscany is beautiful and a must do, must see experience and I am going to have to go ahead and agree with those claims. Absolutely incredible. Words will not do those towns justice, but I am going to try. I may try to sound like a legit writer at times and use imagery and all that jazz so if I fail miserably at making the words sound nice don’t judge me. But here it goes. So Thursday we finish class and go grab our bags and ... read more

Europe February 24th 2010

Well its late now and I thought I would blog a little takeaway from class today. We actually met twice, once in the morning and another time at 4 to watch a video on Michaelangelo. In the morning, Tony had maps of Florence printed out for us and told us a bit about the highlights of what we'd see there. It was pretty informative and I have a better idea of what I want to see, however I think for that trip much of our itinerary is planned out already as Martin will be taking us around. We have an assignment due tomorrow and I've been up late working on it (it took longer than i thought it would) but one of the chapters I had to read was about young michaelangelo. He was born into ... read more

Europe February 23rd 2010

At four o clock we all met in the lobby to go to the Soave winery and the Madame di Lords church which is on a very high hill in Verona overlooking the entire city. To kill the time before then I plan the trips to Sienna with the gang and go to the gym. Much improvement is needed regarding the whole converting kilograms to pounds thing. I picked up two 40 kg dumbbells assuming it was around 60-65 pounds… nope. Turns out 1 kg is 2.2 pounds, so that perfectly explains why there was an epic fail at dumbbell bench pressing the 40 kg weights… in front of the entire Italian crowd at the gym. Is humiliating an understatement? Yes… yes it is. Anyway, we meet down in the lobby and head outside the residence ... read more

I wake up for class today and am immediately feeling better. What saved my life this morning was Starbuck via, that instant stuff you just pour in some hot water. I’m all jittery and energized to start the day. Upon entering class, Tony immediately starts reviewing. He tells us to memorize page 23 of our notebook which breaks down the art and history in Florence in a timeline format showing the transition from the Gothic/Medieval period to the Early Renaissance and Later Renaissance periods. Listening to this guy ramble is so funny, I wish I could capture it in words, but he’ll be talking about one thing and then interject something that has absolutely no correlation to what he was teaching at all. “Go to page 23, you see Ghiberti, who was he, tell me someone, ... read more
