Well I left Ireland on the 2nd of July 2010, so I have been travelling now for quite a while. I backpacked through Thailand, Cambodia and Laos for 2 months and I had an absolute ball. Then I set up base in China for 6 months to teach English. After that I was off again, I backpacked down through China for a month and then crossed into Vietnam where I travelled around for a bit. Finally I flew to Australia on April 12th with a one years working holiday visa. This is where the plan ends.... what happens in Australia and afterwards is completely wide open so whatever happens next is just all part of the adventure!

As always since my last blog quite a lot has happened! When I last wrote I was preparing to get organised for my trip back home. Before that though I got to celebrate Paddy’s day and my final night out in Alice for a while, both of which included plenty of alcohol and fun times!! I then began to pack up my things which believe me after settling for 10months in the one place was a difficult task. It most certainly didn’t all fit back in to my rucksack... so I took what I needed and then stored the rest at Doc’s as I knew my days in Alice weren’t over yet and that I’d be back! Then instead of flying out of Alice to Sydney and catching my flight home another perk of my days ... read more

Life in Alice

So as usual it’s been a few months since my last blog, it’s becoming a bit of a re-occurring trend now how delayed my blogs are... I could say New Year, new resolution and all that and that I’ll try to blog more often but I’m more of a realist it’s probably just not going to happen but I might try harder! Anyways so I’ve now been in Alice Springs (more commonly just known as “Alice” or “The Alice”) for just over 9months and Doc my housemate/best friend in Alice/original tour-guide who brought me to Alice loves to gloat about this as he always said from the start that I was a “stayer” to which I used to deny. Alice really is a funny little town that many people come to for a visit and end ... read more

Okay so when I wrote the last blog I said I’d continue it in a few days, clearly that didn’t happen. And just talking to Mum and Aunty Geraldine the last day on Skype they were reminding me how behind I was and also Mum said Aunty Philomena had commented that I hadn’t blogged in a while. So apologies for the lack of recent updates but I have a few reasons (/excuses??!!) To begin with considering I write my blogs a while after the events have taken place I do have a little mini diary that helps me to keep track of what I’ve done but I lost this for a few weeks. I couldn’t find it anywhere then after asking all my flatmates had they seen it, one of them actually came in from outside ... read more

Right so it’s been ages since I last caught up, and as always it’s been pretty hectic. But I’ve finally settled down again for a little while so now it’s time to tell you all what I’ve been up to over the past two months!! The last time I wrote I had just finally gotten out of Deqin in China where we had been snowed in for a week. Well the bus journey out was thrilling to say the least. It was amazing the morning we heard the roads were open there was a mad dash to pack up and get bus tickets and get out finally. We set off at 10am on a Sunday morning in a sleeper bus. However just my luck the bed I got was right at the very back of the ... read more

I know that I’m uploading these two blogs back to back but it’s a long story as to why.... as I write this I am currently snowed in, in a remote town on the Tibetan border and there is no internet access, so as soon as I get out of here and back to relative civilization I will post these two blogs together. Before I go into my current situation however let me pick up from my last blog. It was off to the Sichuan province, namely Chengdu which was further South than my last location, progressively moving southwards in order to get to Vietnam (if I ever get that far..... never expected to spend this much time travelling China but it really is an amazing place). It was another 16 hour train journey which again ... read more

Ok I wrote this blog on the 4th of March while I was on a long train journey, at this stage I was only at the beginning of my travels in China and had great ideals about updating my blog lots, however I am only getting around to uploading it to the internet now on the 28th March. Since I wrote this things have been very crazy so I’m still uploading the blog as I originally wrote it but it from now on I’m definitely going to have to try write briefer stories and only upload a few photos as it’s a lot harder to find time to update my blog as I am moving so much and with less constant internet access. So since Shanghai a lot has happened! One thing I have definitely come ... read more

Chinese New Year in Shanghai

We had a full week off for spring festival to celebrate Chinese New Year, this was like my Christmas holidays coming late! We (Adam, Demond and myself) booked return flights to Shanghai and got them at a great price considering it was the holidays. Our flight was from Tianjin (a city 1 and 1/2hours away by train) at 4pm so we decided to set off early giving ourselves loads of time to get to the airport and get checked in etc. Firstly when we got to our local train station it was eerily quiet, never before had I ever seen any train station in China like this, usually they are packed with people and they are a great staring opportunity for all the locals when we three foreigners walk in, but not this time. It was ... read more

So another trip to Beijing. The main purpose for this trip was to go and see the great wall in all it's glory. Adam and I set off on our first morning to find the bus that would take us to the Great Wall at “Badaling” which is the most visited and photographed part of the wall. So finding the correct bus to such a tourist spot should have been easy right? Well as always in China nothing is easy but eventually after a little bit of conversing and decision making with a Welsh guy and his Chinese/Canadian girlfriend we figured we were on the official bus and we weren’t being scammed! The drive up to the wall was spectacular in itself then after an hour on the bus we got there and got out of ... read more

Ok so it’s been quite a long time since I’ve updated this therefore some of the things in this blog are a little outdated, but I have been meaning for ages to get around to writing this and telling you all about the way I celebrate the holidays over here in China. Firstly I’m just going to say that it's only because I am a foreigner and that I work for an American company that these holidays were celebrated to the extent that they were! I'll start with Halloween. Halloween isn't something that is traditionally celebrated in China, however in the shops there were costumes and masks for sale and there were some pumpkins to be found albeit they were tiny. This is one thing that I am beginning to notice about China, that all of ... read more

Hey all, so this is just a quick blog to update you guys on what I am up to at the minute. To be honest probably don't have time to be sitting here writing this but I thought, what the hell I need a little break ! So it's all go, go, go at the minute. Two weeks ago we had mid term exams. Each of us foreign teachers had to orally test each of our students individually from age 7upwards, the very young classes don't have exams. I had over 80 students to test in one weekend so believe me it was an intense weekend for both us and the kids. For the most part they all did pretty good, the exams weren't too difficult thankfully. However I did get the odd blank stare when ... read more
