The temples of Angkor really are so amazing that not even a few snapshots will give you much of a glimpse of all the wonders that we saw there. This selection features the temples of Ta Prohm made famous in the Tomb Raider movie, the Temple of the Leper King, Terrace of the Elephants and Bapheon Temple. Pictures of the great Angkor Wat will be in a separate entry so keep your eyes peeled! Enjoy :-)) [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Cambodia! After all the recent disappointments with China and Vietnam, we're so happy to be here. But even if we didn't have any bad experiences to draw comparissons from, there's no denying that Cambodia is a really friendly and relaxed kind of place. At last, a little piece of happiness for us to savour :-)) We left Vietnam on an even worse note than my last blog suggested because when we came to pay for our hotel room, the manager refused to accept that we had paid a deposit already to Hostelworld (despite showing her the receipt for it). When we started our epic journey, Glynn and I both agreed that if we didn't feel comfortable somewhere that we would try out a second location before making the decision to leave. It's with much sadness that we both feel Vietnam isn't the place for us but when you're faced with never knowing who you can trust, it's not a pleasant environment. The weather went in our favour today as it absolutely chucked it down this morning when we left to arrange our visas at the Cambodian Embassy. That meant that many of the touts weren't on the streets and we [View Full Entry]

For the most part, we really didn't enjoy our time in Vietnam so there's not as many photos to choose from as usual. I've picked out the best ones here though they are mostly from Sapa. we hated Hanoi that much that the camera barely came out! [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone. Sorry it's been quiet on the blog lately but we couldn't get access to the website before now. We finally made it across the border and have been in Sa Pa in north Vietnam for 4 nights. We arrived in Ha Noi this morning but are looking to leave again as soon as possible. Vietnam is truly beautiful but we're fed up with all the scammers, touts and rip-off merchants swarming around us. We've been insulted when we've declined tout services, we were ripped off with our train from Lao Cai to Ha Noi despite being extra vigilent and [View Full Entry]

One of the things Glynn and I have enjoyed doing most on this trip so far is getting away from the masses and doing our own thing. We decided not to give up on Sa Pa just yet and we were rewarded with the most brilliant day. First thing this morning we got the minibus back down to Lao Cai on the border as it's cheaper to book train tickets to Ha Noi there. We caught a minibus at the town square and squashed in with more people than there were seats. We found the ticket agency we wanted when we [View Full Entry]

It's been a few days since the last blog and the big news to share with you is that we finally made it across the border and we're now busy enjoying the wonders of North Vietnam. We're in Sa Pa, a small town in the mountains not a million miles away from the border but far enough now to feel really free of all things Chinese! Our journey from Kunming on the overnight sleeper bus was much more pleasant this time. The beds were a bit longer and the roads didn't feel as bumpy so we actually managed to get a [View Full Entry]

Stranded Asia » China » Yunnan » Kunming
Hello again and greetings from..... erm.... well....China. That's right, we've had a bit of a hiccup in our plans and the long and the short of it is that we are stranded in China for the moment and not Vietnam. So, you might be wondering what happened. Ok here goes... Yesterday, we boarded the sleeper bus bound for Hekou on the border at 6.30 pm even though it wasn't due to leave for another hour. We settled into our bottom bunks and waited to depart. the sleeper bus is a double decker bus but without an upstairs. Instead there are 2 [View Full Entry]

Well, seeing as we're stuck in Kunming for another couple of days, there's time to upload the photos of our time here. Kunming has certainly been nicer than anywhere else we've visited in China and of all the places to be stranded, we're glad it's here :-) [View Full Entry]
