The Great Temple Marathon Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor
After 2 days off from temple spotting, today we reached for our passes and hit the ground running. We managed to visit a staggering 6 different temples today, so here's a brief run-down of each one (if I can remember which was which!) 1. Preah Khan - biggish temple with huge trees growing through parts of it. Cool :-) 2. Neak Pean - small central temple surrounded by 4 large pools of water (no water today though). Base of the temple is 2 entwined coiled serpents. Nice enough and a bit different to other temples but not mind-blowing. 3. Ta Som [View Full Entry]

Time Out in Siem Reap Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap
We took a day off from sightseeing today and instead decided to see what Siem Reap town had to offer. We started with a pathetically portioned breakfast at the Blue Pumpkin - a pretentious 'it' bar that has free internet access that you ultimately pay for via the overpriced menu. Ah well, you can't get it right every time. Next we took a stroll through the central market in search of souvenirs. Unfortuantely, although there were some intersting nick nacks for sale, virtually every single market stall sold the same stuff. We soon got weary of 'same shit, different layout' syndrome [View Full Entry]

The hostel arranged a minibus today to take any interested parties up to Tonle Sap lake for a boat ride and the chance to see the floating village. We joined our fellow tourists in the minibus and set off for the lake. On board was a nice Irish couple, Barry and Louise and a Canadian guy, Brian, who was travelling alone. Leaving Siem Reap, the road again became rough and bumpy. Gradually the roadside began to be filled with straw huts and it wasn't long before we were witnessing some extreme poverty again. We saw babies crawling happily next to muddy [View Full Entry]

This was an odd day out - interesting but ultimately very sad to see so much poverty in such a heavily touristed area. Hope you like the photos :-) [View Full Entry]

It's Temple Time Again Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor
It's easy to see why many people might get all templed out here in Angkor but something tells me it's not going to happen to us! Today we joined an American brother and sister for a shared taxi ride around some of the further flung temples in the area and once again, we were not disappointed. We started early, at 8am with our first stop at Bakong Temple. Nice temple featuring carved elephants guarding each corner of a number of terraces that stacked up to form a pyramid with a shrine at the top. Unfortunately, Eddie and Sarah's temples passes had [View Full Entry]

Angkor - Land of Kings Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor
You can't come to Siem Reap without embarking on a tour of the temples. Today we had our first experience of the grace, grandeur and awe of Angkor, the name for the whole area where the hundreds of temples are clustered. Today is also Glynn's birthday so we had to do something spectacular to celebrate - and you don't get more spectactular than this... The temples and religious ruins are scattered over a huge radius where Siem Reap town is the jumping off point so we hired ourselves a tuk tuk driver for the day for 12 dollars. A 7-day temple [View Full Entry]
