I may be slow but ImaHeadaU.

D has been accused of talking about traveling much more than actually traveling. Well, this is supposed to be a trip journal. So, let's see if a trip materializes.

Sit back and enjoy or not as the case may be.

Happy Trails!

D & A rarely make campground reservations. D doesn't like to over plan. Consequently, he occasionally under plans. They try to do most of their touring in the Fall when most families are locked into work and school schedules. However, holidays sometimes present a problem. D & A prefer to camp in a comfortable and secure campground but these places tend to get booked up over holidays. The last weekend of August is the last Bank Holiday of the Summer in the UK and therefore also the last big hurrah of the Summer for most campers and caravanners in the UK. Naturally, D had not made campground booking for this long weekend. He thought he'd try to find one near London but the closest he could get was for one night at WYATTS COVERT C.C. campground ... read more

Now that the van has been given a clean bill of health, it was time to D & A to put a few more klicks on it. They headed south to Southampton to do some camping supply shopping at TOWSURE, a place they'd found the previous year. Among the valuable items purchased were a pair of Wellies (They call them gumboots at home) for each of them and a satellite dish for the TV. Towsure didn't have any more battery powered satellite receivers. So, that item had to go back on the shopping list. In the previous year, one evening found them stranded in Southampton camping in an empty Toys R Us parking lot with drunks climbing onto the bikes during the night. Consequently, they made sure to get out of Dodge (Southampton) heading east before ... read more

Indeed, there were a few things that needed doing before D & A could truly hit the road. In no particular order: - MOT: Motor vehicles in the UK are required to undergo an inspection at least once a year call the MOT test (short for Ministry of Transport D suspects). The motorhome was due for one or so D thought. It was actually overdue for one. - D & A wanted to visit A's nephew Haley who is attending graduate school in London. - D wanted to purchase a new GPS device or Sat Nav as they are called in the UK. The Garmin device they brought from home the previous year had on occasion taken them into some bottle necks in which the street, buildings and bridges formed the bottle neck and their motorhome ... read more

Rested and ready to hit the road D & A loaded up the motorhome and headed back out on their favourite motorway the dreaded M25. At least they didn't need to go so far this day. They headed south from Heathrow to Chertsey, Surrey where they were able to load up on groceries and begin getting the motorhome in order. ... read more

Since D & A had stored their motorhome in their dealer's storage yard in Essex, the primary goal of the day was to get to Essex, recover the motorhome and, assuming it would start, drive it back to their hotel near Heathrow Airport. They asked the front desk staff at the hotel where they could catch the bus to the underground station. The hotel must not get a lot lot transit users. They tried to get us to use the Hoppa Airport Bus which costs 4 GB Pounds each but D & A had already purchased their Oyster cards (transit passes) upon arrival at the Airport the previous day and they were anxious to start using them. Eventually, they found their way onto the bus and underground traveling clear across Greater London from west to east. ... read more

D & A managed to get their bags checked in at the Vancouver airport and paid $50 each for the two suitcases containing the bike and related gear. They changed planes in Minneapolis where apparently their bags were checked for security purposes. Each bike suitcase has a device that helps prevent squashing the bag in transit and consequently damaging the bike parts. This device had been disturbed enough in one bag to allow it to be somewhat squashed. They wont' know if anything is damaged until they assemble the bike later on. Since D & A no longer consider themselves Spring chickens, they had booked a hotel for two night near Heathrow Airport in Greater London in order to help recover from the long flight as well as jet lag and to pick up their motorhome ... read more

Once again A & D are off to explore the UK, France & may be Spain in their motorhome for three months. Last year they traveled from their home in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to the UK where they purchased a used motorhome and toured for three months, storing it in the UK before returning home. As well, last year they had picked up a couple of used bikes from a campground warden in Brighton. A didn't use her bike last year because she is not confident riding in traffic. D didn't use his much either consequently. At home they normally ride a tandem which suits them fine. So, this year they purchased a folding, collapsible tandem bike to bring with them. It packs up into two suitcases and can be taken as regular luggage on ... read more
