| 28th June 2005 Erin again | burma accomodations - From: Monkey Town. do you have the LP/shoestring southeast asia with you? i can't remember the names of the places where i stayed in Yangon or Mandalay but they were awesome - they're both in the guide -- yangon is the one thats in the old teak family home that has the guitar player. leelee runs the place and she is soo terrfic. the rooms are clean and breakfast every morning. its a few blocks away from the city centre. Mandalay - i stayed at the place that Shoestring pretty much identifies as the best budget place around. its called the royal guest house or something like that. its right around nylon ice cream. the staff are awesome there too and since its low season you can totally get deals on rooms. go in low and see how well you can do. also, you should totally go to Pwe u Lin - the hill station - it'll be much cooler up there. you can take the train up there general class for 2 bucks or so. the train leaves early but its such an awesome ride. umn, in yangon you should totally check out this shan noodle place, called 99. its on 34th street. the tofu is awesome and they have a veg. shan noodle dish which is sooooo good. cheers Erin |
| 28th June 2005 erin a.ka. gerry from see's daughter | burmese visa - From: Monkey Town. hey natalie, you don't know per se, i'm gerry's daughter. i was in the area that you're in now just a few weeks ago and i wanted to let you know that the land crossing to burma from chiang mai is problematic at best and i wouldn't recommend trying it. also, you will need to apply for a burmese visa in advance - the myanmar embassy is in bangkok. while i was in myanmar (only about 3-4 weeks ago) i didn't meet a single person who had succcessfully managed to get a visa at the border. cheers Erin |
