Well, I’ve done it!!! I’ve left Cambodia (insert really sad, tear-stained face). I’m now in transit at Changi Airport, Singapore ........I feel a bit shell-shocked to be honest, ok, really shell-shocked. Last time I was here was the 18thSeptember and I was so excited about the adventure I was embarking on. Today I should be excited about heading to Europe and the next adventure, but ....sigh... (I feel like I’m on the set of Love Actually ...Christmas carols are playing and people arriving and departing etc)......... What a big week I’ve had since I last wrote....... Anyone that’s kept up with my blogs knows that while I enjoyed being at the school in Siem Reap, I was only acting as a teacher’s aide and so I didn’t get really close to the students, only a handful. ... read more

Can you believe that I only have 6 more sleeps in Cambodia? I certainly can’t... Sure, it feels like a lifetime ago that I arrived, but also it almost feels like it was “just” yesterday. Three months here seemed such a long time in the planning stage, but I could stay for a year and still want more time here.......I love the place, and I feel so at home here. I’ve really settled in and feel like part of the landscape, I no longer feel like a foreigner.... I know the streets and surrounds, I know some of the locals, I’m on waving terms with the tourist police at various checkpoints, I understand some Khmer..........it actually cracks me up when I’m changing channels on the tv and see something that looks a bit interesting and leave ... read more

Who knew a bicycle tumble could make its way into 3 blogs..........?? Eight days after my tumble, my foot is still swollen and uncomfortable to walk on so I finally paid a visit to the hospital to get the foot checked and xray’d. It turns out that at some stage in years gone by, I’ve broken 3 bones in my foot and never had them treated.....they believe they were broken at different times, but I can only recall one time when I dropped something on the arch of my foot and it’s been sensitive ever since. I didn’t think at the time that I’d broken it though..... Anyway, what I’ve managed to do this time is “traumatise” the previously broken bones and some the ligaments – thankfully it’s not broken this time. So, my foot is ... read more

Firstly for anyone that read my previous blog about the spill I had on the bike, I’d love to tell you that I’m all well and healed, but the reality is that one week on, my shoulder joint it still bruised and sore but it is improving, but my right foot is not so good. It remains a little swollen and very painful, but there is no bruising or obvious signs of impact, so I have no idea what is wrong with it. Hmmm, have I been to the doctor yet? Well, no, I haven’t, as I keep thinking it will be better “tomorrow”. I caught up with Sara last night and she suggested that there could be a small bone that is fractured, so once she’s left SR, I just may drag myself to the ... read more

My mother always said that “pride goes before a fall”, and if the events of yesterday afternoon are anything to go by, well I guess she was right !!! I’ve been doing quite a bit of bike (bicycle) riding in Siem Reap, which is something I haven’t done for a few years, and was really enjoying it. Each time I made it home safely, I’d give myself theoretical pat on the back.....I’ve mentioned many times that there are no road rules here, and that it’s insanity on the roads...so every time I arrived home I felt a pretty decent sense of achievement. Hmmm, so what happened yesterday I hear you asking..... On Tuesday afternoon after school, Sina (one of the teachers) and I road home side by side (moto and bicycle) and had a chat about ... read more

Life in Siem Reap is so much different to Phnom Penh. On a personal level, I’m only at school for half a day and so I’ve started the transition from working full-time and moving into holiday mode....it’s taking some getting used to, but I confess to loving the lazy mornings...Mind you, I’m still overseeing things here at Alan’s guest house and most mornings are spent assisting the staff or talking to guests and making sure things are running as well as possible. Alan’s back late Friday, so as of next week I’ll play tourist in my spare time. SR has changed considerably since I was here last time – it seems to me that there are far more tourists here now than there were in 2003, though the locals are saying there’s actually a decline in ... read more

My last blog ended up being long-winded despite my earlier writers’ block, and thanks to a number of glitches on the blog website, it was a drama to load...funny how some things work out that way....the beginning of the week just seemed totally out of kilter, but it’s back on track and all is well again..... I’m happy to have left the NHC school and am now back with SCC and loving it. The school that I’m at was set up by an Australian couple about a year ago, and they spend a lot of time administering it, as well as teaching alongside the two Khmer teachers. They have one large covered classroom that holds about 40 students and they have three teaching sessions a day, and an outdoor covered area that they also use. The ... read more

I’ve been looking for inspiration and enthusiasm to write a blog update for days, but they’ve proven elusive....I’m not sure if I’m in great form yet, but I’ll make a good attempt to update you on the last week or so....some days have been like diamonds, and some days I’ve had to look for the silver lining.. One of the great highlights of my last week at school was the Happy Happy Program (HHP) on Tuesday....quirky name for sure, but very indicative of the afternoon that we had. The head monk visited school on Monday and invited me along to the HHP....he explained that it would be an afternoon of traditional Khmer song and dance, and was in honour of a lady that had committed to financially assist the organisation/schools over the next two years....she would ... read more

I’m so not ready to leave Phnom Penh....didn’t I just get here? I don’t want to go....( said in Princess Sooky Tone ) I know that I’m going to embrace the next stage of this awesome journey and there will be dozens of new adventures, fabulous people to meet, with many interesting and challenging coming my way, which will leave me with many happy memories and stories to tell, and I am truly looking forward to experiencing them all ..... it’s just that I love being here in PP and I feel the time to move on has come around way too fast – can the person that hit the fast forward button please fess up? There is so much to love about PP, and after nine weeks here, these are a “few” of my favourite ... read more

One thing I knew for sure when I came back to Cambodia, was that I would have to tuck my “safety first” mentality firmly behind my blinkers and accept that “this is the way it’s done in Cambodia”. Today’s bus trip home from Sihanoukville is a classic example of why this attitude is necessary in order to maintain an ever so slight grasp on sanity.... I’ve established in recent weeks that I’m not a fan of the Sorya bus company, and that I prefer to travel with Paramount....I came home with Paramount from Sihanoukville the first time and the trip was relaxed, friendly, and the buses clean – which was in direct contrast to the trip on Sorya on the way there. It was therefore a straightforward decision for Melanie and I to book our return ... read more
