Merida, MX

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida
Ah Merida... arrived on the midnight from Mexico City. Already I like this town! What a major difference form the cities up north... much like Florida towns are very different from Northern cities in the US. On the way from the airport I saw some amazing architecture. Lots of white walls and the city seems very very clean. Also - I didn't see a lot of homeless and whatnot. Although I need to work today, I hope I get a chance to explore this evening. The pool at this hotel is amazing... like a resort. The hotel is just as good [View Full Entry]

Juarez, MX

View from my room...
It wasn't a great view but it wouldn't have mattered where my room was.
All right, early morning flight to Huston. From Huston to Monterrey, MX to Juarez, MX. What can be said about Juarez? It is a border town. I stayed at the Radisson and everyone was very nice. The hotel accommodations were good but not quite up to Radisson standards. Also, the hotel was a ghost town. Apparently there has been a rise in violence lately. With that said... 90% of the people I ran into were really nice and just going about their business. I did hear several people at the airport make racist comments about me but hey that is their [View Full Entry]

Unfortunately, I didn't get anymore time to explore the city as there were areas I was hoping to visit. Mostly my observations were tempered on both sides from my orginal arrival. These range from the quality of the hotel to the city/country in general. 1st - I am watching the Olympics and I was surprised at how excited the announcers were when the Venezuelan team walked by vs. the US. This just speaks to just how dangerous and unstable the political situation is here. Just imagine if we ended up with another Hugo Chavez on our border - it would be [View Full Entry]

Apparently my opinion on Mexican literacy has offended some. While I do not apologize for my comments I think the reason I feel that literacy rates are low are due to differing reports on the literacy rates and the obvious disparities in geographic distribution of literacy between the countryside and the city. I believe this is due to different standards as to what constitutes literacy as some reports cite work that simply asked students "can you read and write" while others conducted standardized tests. In addition, there are differences between what some consider to be literate (owning a col [View Full Entry]

I got an e-mail from my client at 5 PM saying we should pick up our testing in the morning. Bingo! I still had time to see downtown. I should have prepared during all the downtime I had but I didn't think I would be able to go today... so I didn't. Next time this won't happen. I thought I had lost my camera or had it lifted on my last jaunt out but I eventually found it. There were some curse words coming out of my mouth! It turns out that the last time I was taking the metro, it [View Full Entry]

Another Panorama
Dan

Being my first time in Mexico city... I was planning on heading out when I got to the hotel today. Well... it's started raining like cats and dogs right now and I am sure glad I didn't go out. I will try and finish my verizon testing tomorrow quickly so I can go down and see the historical district. My very short impression of Ciudad de Mexico is that the people are very very friendly and very helpful. However, I was hoping to be able to practice my Spanish... but most people I have run into don't want to speak Spanish [View Full Entry]

Woke up @ 7 AM this morning and went to breakfast. Breakfast here is a lot like lunch everywhere else - I wasn't sure if they were using leftovers from last night or what but it looked a lot like dinner. They serve a lot of cow brain and whatnot. There was only two dishes I could eat: potatoes with cheese on them and some chicken that looked like dinner. The rest was steak, pork, and brain. Well, the testing didn't get off to a great start. We had some serious trouble with one of the phones and our client's client [View Full Entry]
