Enjoying your BLOG
Hi, I enjoy very much reading your BLOGs...they are very detail and informative. I am a Vietnamese living in Canada, and will be visiting Viet Nam this summer with my family for about a month, after 30 years being away !!! I left Viet Nam when I was thirteen, and on this trip back, I plan to visit Viet Nam from South to North : Saigon, Mekong river, Phan Thiet/Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Da Nang/Hoi An, Hue, Ha Noi, Hai Phong/Ha Long Bay, so I have been reading up on people's travel BLOGs to plan for the trip. Nha Trang was my old home town, and I have been at Sai Gon, and Phan Thiet before, but I have never been to the north of Viet Nam due to the war at that time, so I found you BLOGs very helpful when I travel north this summer, also, I am very impressed that you can name the locations in Viet Nam the way they are written in Vietnamese (at first I thought you are Vietnamese !!!)...I didn't see you mention 'Tam Coc', it's 'Ha Long Bay on Land' : so if you like Ha Long bay, I think you will also like this one. In Viet Nam, some locations are famous for certain types of food, If you are still in Ha Noi, try 'Bun Cha Ca', Hue is famous for 'Bun Bo Hue', 'Banh Nam', and 'Banh Beo', Nha Trang is famous for 'Nem Nuong' and 'Banh Mi', Phan Thiet is famous for 'Banh Xeo' (there is a whole street selling just 'Banh Xeo')...though these dishes are also generally available in many other cities in Vietnam, there are variations, and they are not as good. I hope you enjoy the rest of your travels in Viet Nam, and hope you will find Viet Nam a very diversed and interesting country to travel. If you have any question for me, please do not hesitate to ask, and I will try my best to answer them, and I hope that I can also ask you for some advices when you finish your Viet Nam's travel.

the leper colony near Qui Nhon - a Christmas party
It was during the Christmas season in 1970 when our Catholic chaplin asked if any of the men in my combat artillary unit would like to help throw a party for the orphans at the Leper Colony near Qui Nhon. We were the 7/15th Field Artillary US Army near Phu Cat north of the colony. I remember the place well. We had a convoy of about 7 vehicles bringing food and gifts for the children. The Padre scrounged up huge tins of ice cream and the childresn were really overjoyed. The place was run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, a French order. It was a soul moving experience.
