fit to drop...? - From: Beautiful Bhutan
Hi Helen, Happy to see that you are well! You have now completed your long trip with this trek in Bhutan. You will see that back home, you are incinvible when climbing a mountain... even after a while! I went to a "high" mountain in the Adirondacks, east of US, border with Canada. ok, not as high as Stok Kangri, but the steep is hard. I went with friends who are very well in shape. All the way up, I found that the pace was a little bit too fast for me, only because I got used to go in slow motion in high altitude. But the breath was perfect and I felt like if I did a stroll and though very sincerely that my friends feel the same. All the week along, they complain about leg pain, and have difficulty to climb stairs. You know what...? I didn't feel a bit of their pain! Have a good travel back home. Thuy

Hi Helen, Enjoying your bloggs, sounds like you are having an amazing time. Hope the last trek went well. You are probably incredibly fit by now so I think I'll have to decline any invite to bike with you when you return home. I've sent you an e-mail about windsuring next year but not sure whether it went, let me know if you haven't recieved it. We are doing the usual stuff at home. We are going to a wedding in New York in Nov though, which we are really looking forward to although we're not particularly excited about the 8 hour flight with Amy. Love Trish and Tim

Hi Helen - From: Raising the roof
Just catching up on your blogs after being on holiday in La Santa, Lanzarote. Now in recovery after wearing myself out playing lots of different sports and partying in the normal hedonistic western style. I have to admire you living in basic accomodation for so long. Seems like the roof project was good fun, just my kind of thing. It was interesting to read about your pump adventures, how are you getting on with it? They really need to stop the sediment getting into the bearings. Hope you continue to have good fun. Cheers, Bob.

Back from France - From: Ladakhi Festival
Hi, now back from 2 glorious weeks at the barn. Brian and I were out on our own the first week and as the weather was cloudy we walked everyday, leading up to a big 8 hour marathon over 17 km and a lot of metres up! We were quite pleased with ourselves as the book had predicted a 2 day trip which we managed in one. Having said all that , it doesn't match up to your high altitude escapades-keep up the blog , it is fascinating. Then we aere able to spend the following week on the beach as Anna and frined flew out to join us. We have now seen Mandy's new place only 3km down the road from us which has a fantastic view of Canigou both from their pool and their wrap around balcony. Anna did well in her GCSE's getting 2As, 4Cs and just missing out on English but we were not surprised, all that texting expertise really doesn't help with the English language. Chris has just got student of the year on his engineering course so is plugging for a rise from his employer! Finally caought up with Martin peacey just before we left, he hasn't changed much in 12 years, has a fabulous house and a few boats in his possession and will be popping over to the Uk more regularly now on business so we might all get together sometime. Keep up the standard of detail, it really takes us into your world. Take care, Sue

Small world - From: Ladakhi Festival
Dave Brealey gave me your site address last evening, as I have just returned to Nottingham yesterday from Ladakh myself. 2nd visit and second trek (Lamayaru to Padum). I enjoyed your site, having seen the festival & the gompas, I can relate to your experiences. Following our 1st visit 2 years ago, we are involved in the construction of a new hostel for 200 school children in Leh. Please feel free to have a look at us on www.childreninladakh.org.uk The building is coming on now and it was an emotional experience for us to see the building taking shape. Good luck and best wishes. Colin Maber

who's entertaining who? - From: Ladakhi Festival
The festival sounds like a great money spinner for the locals and they obviously enjoy watching the tourists make a fool of themselves! I know just how you feel as the boys howl with laughter when my arrow drops at my feet, they are big archery fans. We had a target ( old pirate scarecrow!) set up in the paddock over the bank holiday weekend. Unusually the weather was great and so we were camping up there trying out our new tent- not as exotic as your holiday but very relaxing. I think Michael Palin showed one of the polo matches on his travel program - they looked mad. As for the music don't bring a tape back for the boys! SECMOL sounds like a great place for you to be especially with all the forms of renewable energy they have, should inspire you to come hpome with loads of great ideas. Hope you stay well and happy, enjoying all your updates but would love to see some piccies. TTFN Sharon xxoo

Wow! An amazing journal. - From: SECMOL
Good to hear your news, Helen. Sounds as though you are having an incredible experience. I loved reading about your trek - You'll no doubt be joining us on our climb of Mont Blanc on your return - You'll be able to advise us on crampons, etc. We're wondering which of the 5 routes to take!! Well, we can dream! We had a fantastic 2 weeks in Chamonix with some fantastic walks. The scenery was incredible and being so close to the different glaciers was incredible - Pete and I were itching to walk across them but the children were happy to watch the ice falls off the snout of the glaciers. Remind us how long you are teaching and where you go to next. Look forward to your next update. Take care and have fun. Sal and Pete

False alarm - From: SECMOL
SECMOL info was mindblowing, I love the detail.. I remember having to wash to the availability of warm water and the scoop system, usually where there is water there are hordes of feeding mosquitoes but you don't mention any, so fingers crossed, perhaps the altitude keeps them away? How are you coping with the height, any headaches, shortness of breath- no, in fact that is just advancing years not altitude sickness, isn't it!? The evening with Martin didn't happen, i got the date wrong , Sal turned up with food to feed an army and sat around until about 8.30pm before checking the dates he offered in his email-I was a week ahead of myself, not very amusing really but we called up some friends nearby to help us eat all the food and they appreciated it anyway. So Sal gets to do it all again next Friday-opps!! In fact you don't mention any diseases or the kind of food you are eating-cooked chicken tonight here by the way but then you can probaly kill on fresh when you fancy it. And how are you coping with the exposure to the sun, could you ship some over here please, another golf match interspersed with rain today. Must break off to finish a collage of Canigou that i want to ship out to the barn. I shall be looking at the girls ski-ing trip dates soon, the flights are up. Can you confirm in your Blog when you are due back-I can't remember!! Enjoy and keep snapping, even if you have seen it all before, they will look fantastic when you get back. Lol Sue et al

Hello Helen - From: SECMOL
So you have reached your final destination at SEMCOL. I enjoyed reading your detailed description of how you are living. Its facinating that you can live in such a place comfortably with so little energy. How is the internet connected, satellite? Microwave? I think the houses made from compacted earth with a long drop could go a long way to solving the housing problem here! Resale value may be a problem though? Perhaps the revision of solving quadratic equations may be useful eventually. Are you going to fix their solar pumps while you are there? Enjoy yourself. Regards, Bob.

Coincidence - From: What a difference
Hi, great to hear from you, the travelling sounds hideous and I suspect worse than you are telling. We have been making a point of watching the India Pakistan series on the BBC since you are over there and watched the very same ceremony of closing the bodrers only last Sunday night but in the comfort of our home with a glass of wine, and clean sheets-jealous-no , but we are, I would love to have seen and heard it live. We have a surprise visitor for TGIF tonight-Martin Peacey has jetted in from the States and is coming to see us all, Pete and Sal etc. Will update you on that because it must be 15 years since we last saw him. The weather here has turned a bit better, and we are on countdown of 1 more camp to go before a 2 week trip to the Pyrenees and lots of walking. How is the photography going anyway? And have you managed to stay in reasonable health? We managed a 2 day trip to the Lakes and did Consiton Old Man and Place Fell last weekend with rain all around us and waterproofs at the ready . Pete and Sal have just retunred from 2 weeks in Chamonix and are raving about that too-looking forward to Pete's photos. Keep up the great travelog, it is fascinating as usual. Lol Sue et al

Hello Helen - From: What a difference
What an amazing journey. It just happens I was watching a TV programme where an Indian actor is tracing his family history and he crossed the border from India to Pakistan and had the same experience as you and commented on the contrast between the Indian and Pakistan sides. The programme also showed the border closing ceremony and visiting Amritsa. Its facinating that you are actually there and doing it and I can visualise what you are describing. Climbed up around Napes Needle on Great Gable with Christine, Pete and Tim on weekend camping trip. Nothing compared to your experiences. My atlas shows that Leh is at 5578m, not far from Aksai Chin. Are you living at that hieght? Hope you are keeping well and enjoy the rest of your adventure. Cheers, Bob.

I'm really glad You are enjoying yourself so much but I have to say that I am definitely one of the faint hearted who wouldn't! I think I would have the heebie-jeebies if was there -not being blessed with a good sense of balance and co-ordination. Looking at the photos will be quite enuff for me! I'll just stick to walking the dogs round the cliffs in the wind and watching the boys doing scary black runs. Hope You avoid the bugs and injuries LOL Sharon xxoo

Awesome Trip - From: Awesome, stunning, fantastic...
Hi Helen, good to hear from you again. Sounds like you have had some amazing adventures. A bit more adventurous than our cycling in mud and rain back here. It just won't stop raining, got soaked again tonight out running. Good luck on the rest of your adventures. Where to now after Karakoram? Are you teaching next? Cheers, Bob

Good - she's really gone. Let's party.... - From: Lively fireworks!
OK - so you think you're living on the edge. Try navigating a herd of rush hour cows in the depths of Wiltshire. And as for your 'wooden souvenir'- I have no idea what popped into other readers minds when they read your blog but I hope they are purer of mind than I...! To serious talk at last - you're there, you're off and I envy you (sort of). Hope the trek proper goes well- but stay cautious and safe Helen.

News from Proteus! - From: Lively fireworks!
Hi, great to hear from you. Glad to hear someone else got stopped for handluggage crimes apart from me. I nagged Anna and her freinds about the weight of all their hold luggage on the Post GCSE trip to the barn only to get stopped with my 'little' wheelie bag for being 3 kg overweight. I had to distribute most of my camera gear into the 'girlie' handbags! You have just missed a flying visit from Ian, over on business from Brisbane. He literally stopped over Saturday night, whereupon we had a great reunion with Pete/Sal. They are still looking to returnto the Uk if possible but the jobs in the marine design industry are just not coming up. They expect expect their second baby in Oct too, and Ruth is keen to be amongst family-even tho they seem to be scattered across Europe these days! Summer camps have just started so the evenings are as busy as the days. It has finally stopped raining here but it isn't exactly warm yet. Chris is raving it up in Tenerife with 11 other lads, but we haven't heard from him as he managed to lose his mobile phone on the first day. Rang and spoke to the Dales last w/end who are in fine form, they have just been holidaying on New Caldonia, an idyllic island somewhere near them, it sounded very much like a Thai destination-memories! Keep well and keep us posted Sue
