Even at home I've run into problems with the picture uploader so here are a few and I'll put more effort into it later. So I know I've seriously slacked off about posting my completion so I thought I'd at least let you know I've made it home safely. My Birthday in Helen was awesome! We had Hungry & Drippy with us to add to the fun. It was a wild good time of making friends with the locals and of course pushing the limits of excess. The following morning was difficult and made for a long day of hiking slower than I had in a long time. Still worth it of course. The last week on the trail became bitterly cold on the trail. The temperature was generally below freezing during the day an dropping ... read more

Georgia at last!

I almost didn't think it would ever happen and half wish it wouldn't, but I've finally made it to Georgia! The last of North Carolina was difficult. Grittz and I had this great idea to hike from Fontana Damn to the NOC... 30 miles, one day, and some of the most extreme elevation changes since New England. We still did it in 10 hours, but I was really tired for the first time in a long time. I heard they were having a drought down here so my personal rain curse has apparently fixed that. After 3 days of overcast and intermittent showers it finally broke loose into a downpour. Last night, my last in NC, was also the coldest on the entire trail! I was wearing all my clothes, my sleeping bag, and my new ... read more

I'm on the verge of finishing the longest state on the trail! Virginia holds over 500 miles of the AT and I'm so excited to hit Tennessee! The weather really did get cold last week and I woke up with my water frozen and very little ambition to leave my sleeping bag. I can handle the cold, but I'm looking forward to finishing up and retreating to heated buildings and my soft warm bed. We hit Grayson Highlands State Park and the bald hill tops and grassy fields reminded me of hiking out west. There are "wild" ponies that live in the park and we got a chance to approach a few. Only one was curious enough to let us feed/pet it. I was so tempted to jump on one and see if I could go ... read more

Virginia is Awesome! The trail here is nicely graded (not so steep) and the views are amazing! I spent the first half of it with Pocket and we had a lot of fun taking short days and waiting for others to catch back up. Now that Yearbook, Grittz and 2-Liter are with us again the miles have picked up. I'm hoping to summit Springer on my birthday Nov. 18th and be home in time for thanks giving. I'm torn between being excited to come home and not wanting the trip to end. It's funny to feel like it's almost over with almost 600 miles left to go. The weather is supposed to really cool off next week and hopefully I'm prepared. Hope you enjoy the pictures and I'll see about filling you in again just before ... read more

September 20th 2008

I've had a bunch of computer access lately, but I think something is wrong with the website. I haven't been able to get the bulk picture uploader to work anywhere. I suppose a quick verbal update is in order, but I would much rather just caption a ton of photos. I crossed all of PA... it was rocky! There were 1000-foot downs, then back ups, every 15 miles but in between there was negligible elevation change. Amongst those flat sections were stretches of rocks that were worse than walking in a creek bed. Worse, mainly because the rocks were sharp and pointy, unlike water worn creek rocks. I was ahead of Stretch and SlotMachine but behind Yearbook and some other hikers I hadn't met yet. So I walked alone for most of it and the solitude ... read more

WELL.... I haven't been able to update this in a very long time so maybe some of you are wondering if I'm still on the trail. Good news, I am still on the trail and things are going great! Bad news, I don't have most of my pictures with me to share with you. (I'll explain where they went as I unfold the story of the last 3 states) So I left the Green Mountain House hostel in VT and that was the last time I saw Gash & Dank. I reunited with Yearbook and we began hiking together. I stopped at a lookout point and was enjoying the view and a snack with a few day hikers and one north bounder. As we were all stopped, there was a group of moths that kept fluttering ... read more

So I left off in Hannover and just getting to Phi Tau. I wound up playing beer pong at Tabord. But up at Dartmouth they use paddles to play pong and I have to say, it was a lot of fun. When I got up at 7 the next morning it was pouring outside. By the time I finished riding buses to EMS in the next town over, it was to late and to poor of weather to continue on. So I zeroed in Hannover and went back to Tabord for a lingerie party the second night! Unfortunately there were no pictures allowed so I can't prove it, or share it with any of you, but it was a great time. (Thanks Danielle!) My next big stop was Rutland Vermont. I loved it there. I had ... read more

Wow... It's been a long time since I've seen the internet! What is one to do? I've managed to make it all across New Hampshire and not have a single chance to fill you all in. I'm doing well and currently hanging out in the library on the Dartmouth University campus. I'll be spending the night at one of the fraternity houses. I've already stopped in there to shower and drop off my pack. New Hampshire has been wonderful! As soon as I hit the first town (Gorham) I noticed a difference in the trail. The AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club... AKA... Appalachian Money Collectors) does a great job maintaining the trail. One would hope so, because as far as I know they are the only ones with a paid trail crew. They charge money to stay ... read more

Last stop in Maine

July 23rd 2008

So, I'm getting so close to finishing Maine I can taste it! The weather has taken a turn for the worse. It has been raining for about 5 days straight now and it is not in the forecast to stop. I suppose if I only had two words to describe Maine it would be muddy and steep. The trails here are mostly runoff paths for rain water so I've been creek walking for an eternity. My shoes will never be dry! I've got a situation similar to blisters across the knuckles of my toes to the point of bleeding. Surprisingly it really doesn't hurt that much. I'm in incredibly good spirits right now and I'm super excited to cross into New Hampshire! Thanks to all of you that have added comments and are tracking me as ... read more

July 17th 2008

I'm on into the next town (Straton) I had a wonderful trip over Avery peak. The view from the top was incredible! I could see for over 100 miles in each direction. My knee is doing much better and I've been making 15+ miles a day. I figure after I get out of Maine and Vermont I will be able to hit around 20 or so. I've been taking a bunch of photos but I still don't have a cable out here. I stole a few from Stretch (18 year old high school grad that I've been hiking with for a few days) So check out a few photos for now and I'll have more later on. ... read more
