Riobamba

The long awaited departure from Guayaquil had finally arrived and we returned to the anklespraining bus terminal to hop a ride to Riobamba. The 5 hour trip took us away from the hot humid city and up into the lush and much cooler Ecuadorian highlands filled with farmland and rolling hills. We took a cab downtown to find a hostel agreed to the first reasonably clean and cheap one we saw then w

The Grasps of Guayaquil

Sarah enjoyed her new book Precious while I tossed and turned in the airplane seat feeling awfully sick on our flight back from the Galapagos. Our plan when we landed was to go to the bus terminal and figure out how to get out of Guayaquil as quickly as possible although in all likelihood it would have to be the next day since we did not want to show up in a new town at night. We had already sp

Galapagos Cruise Day 8 Goodbye Galapagos

Sarah and I were up and on the deck at 530 to watch the sunrise. It was a bit cloudy so we did not get a spectacular sunrise. Still it was nice to look out over the glasslike ocean as the colors changed. To the north we could see Chinese Hat and the new lava flow on Santiago. It feels like ages since we were there yet at the same time it was like yesterday. We motor east now for our last visit

We arrived at our anchor point some time over night. The ride seemed fine and when I woke up the seas were so calm I couldn39t tell we were even on a boat. Sarah had been up for about an hour watching the sunrise. Her report on wildlife a sea lion burped. I went up to the top deck to watch for a little too before breakfast and only saw two penguins in the water. Otherwise things were calm.Tod

Galapagos Cruise Day 5 Isabela Island

The boat engines kicked on at about 2am waking the entire boat. A lot of people did not sleep well as we were bounced around in bed but Sarah and I did better than most. When the alarm went off at 640 like it has everyday so we have a few minutes to get ready for breakfast the boat was still moving a bit of a surprise. It was not until about 720 when the boat lowered anchor at the town port

Galapagos Cruise Day 6 Fernandina and Isabela

Success I do not know if we are all just getting use to the boat but everybody handled the 11 hour motor well. We arrived to our anchor spot at Punta Espinoza a few minutes before 7. We are anchored about 200 meters off the shore of Fernandina yet we can still see the bottom of the ocean. Just in the few minutes of taking in the scenery before breakfast we saw two endemic species the lava gul

At last a solid nights sleep Sarah and I both got a good much needed 9 hours. The boat had already moved to Sombrero Chino Chinese Hat before dinner yesterday so we were anchored and seas were quiet. At 8 we hopped in the dinghys and got a little boat tour of the south side of the channel on the north side of Santiago where the new lava flow enters the water. From the boat we saw a number of ma

At about 630 I was awake and feeling good. Sarah was totally fine the rough seas last night did not bother her at all. The boat was nestled in to Sullivan Bay between the big island of Santiago and the small island of Bartolome. The seas were very calm.700 breakfast and by 800 we were off to Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island. After a wet landing Victor introduced the island and as he was doing

At 530am the boat engine cut off and I could see out the port window that we had arrived in Genovesa and the sun was just coming up. I went up to the uncovered deck to get a look. Everybody else was still asleep. There were thousands and thousands of birds in the sky hovering over the fairly small cliff edge. Three other boats had arrived as well and were anchored nearby Genevieve a large sailb

Let the cruise begin

We were up earlier than we would like given that we did not need to meet our boat at the channel between Baltra the island with the airport and Santa Cruz until noon. But when the last bus is at 9 for 1.80 and the alternative is an 18 cab up by 7 is the logical choice. We visited our favorite breakfast place one last time although we may never know the restaurants name and ordered the usua

Galapagos Day 9 Celebrate

Today was a chill day. We did not wake up and get moving until 10. We went to our favorite breakfast place and dragged out a long breakfast turned lunch. Continental breakfast turned to cheeseburger turned to coffee. By 200 we left with the idea of going back to Tortuga Bay but within 5 steps of leaving the restaurant the heat of the day destroyed us and we were resigned to trying not to move.Th

Tuesday May 8th started with an early rise and the temptation to wake the woman who had woken us the day before. She was the hostel owners mother and had woken us up quite early the day before with loud knocking followed by 5 minutes of uncomprehendable Spanish before she finally gave up at our lack of understanding and walked away. Guess it wasnt that important. We made our way to the dock to c

Galapagos Day 7 La Loberia Chasing another Turtle

Today we planned a somewhat relaxing day. It was a very hot day today without any of the cloud cover that made the previous two days more pleasant. We had just sat down for breakfast when I broke my first sweat. The dock was bustling this morning with crews picking up supplies for their ships. We saw the Austrailian couples boat there to pick them and others up today. After looking at the ships fo

Today we got up at a leisurely pace and headed down to Galapagos Fishing Adventures by 820 to let them know we were ready for our snorkeldive trip. We did not need to be there for another 25 minutes so we went across the street and upstairs to a restaurant for breakfast. Another continental breakfast with a banana milk shake gross in Sarahs opinion. About 5 minutes before 9 the tour guide ru

I awoke about 7 and worked on blog entries on the phone for an hour before Sarah woke up. We got ready and walked down to the tour shop to try on our equipment for Sundays trip. Sarah quickly had fins mask and snorkle in order while I struggled to try on the biggest wetsuit they had. It was super tight but most of the time they are for me. I asked if they had something a little bigger but no luc

Galapagos Day 4 Lonesome George and San Cristobal

We woke up this morning and headed down to the dock to find a 7am water taxi that would take us to San Cristobal. We had seen ads for 40 round trip so that is what we were shooting for. Turns out those ads are to Isabela and not San Cristobal and there is only one boat that makes the trip at 7am in the morning and it was full. Bummer we had woken up so early. Instead we bought round trip ticket

Our morning was filled with another trip to Cafe Hernan followed by some bathing suit shopping flight change and a visit to the bank so we could pay the rest of the cruise. And again I had way more cash in hand than I really wanted but being in the Galapagos with it is not so bad. As we waited in line at the bank tour operators were walking in and depositing thousands and thousands of dollards

The adventure continued this morning as we started the day off walking back towards the docks. We had some appointments with people on cruise stuff but since we had some time we went in search of food. And to Sarahs delight her every wish came true when we found pancakes As a huge breakfast lover she has been in serious withdrawal on this trip and this was a welcome change.
Welcome to the Galapagos

We woke up super early this morning with the hope of getting to the airport and finding seats on a flight to the Galapagos. At about 5am the cab picked us up from Hostal Mantesa and off to the airport we went. TAME and LAN were both open so we got pricing from them but we had to wait a bit before AeroGal opened up the normally cheapest option only to learn their flight was full. So TAME it was

We arrived in Guayaquil to the main bus terminal about 300 in the afternoon. Guayaquil does it right their bus terminal is gigantic has a mall and sits right next to the airport. We grabbed some US from the ATM so wild that they use the USD as their currency. In the food court we grabbed some Pizza Hut. Talked to information. Then took a 3 cab ride to the city center. We had the cab driver
